I'm pretty sure that's the answer to any question in the Mass Effect universe.

How do the mass relays work?
Mass effect fields!
How do ships still have gravity while in space?
Mass effect fields!
How does Jack deflect bullets with her bare chest?
Mass effect fields!

Oh well. Nobody ever said it was intended to be "hard" science fiction.

I always thought they had some gas pocket thing that allowed them to float...

Huh, you learn something new every day.

Well damn...and here i though they were just using their tentacles...
Seriously, i just thought they had those weird-looking long legs or something, never really looked closely if they seemed to hover or stand on them.
Well, the more i know, the better.

Simple. The same way everything in every fictional universe works: The willing suspension of disbelief.

Although if GodsandFishes is correct, where do they store such levitation jetpacks? o.0

I wondered that too. You don't see them wearing anything. They're just shiny pink things, completely nekkid.

Why does virtually everyone in the universe speak English?
Mass effect fields! XD

I think it's just a fancy phrase for "willing suspension of disbelief."

A wizard did it.

That's the standard answer for all your questions on the way things work in SciFi and fantasy. Dont think about it and just enjoy the ride.

The Hanar always look like they are tethered to the ground, so I though they were filled with a lighter-than-oxygen gas. The thing they are tethered to could be the anti-grav unit.

Actually Jack and other Biotics (note that only they don't have armors on them) have Biotic fields that works just as combined armor+generated shield. Everyone seems to forget about it and make jokes about what makes Miranda's spandex bulletproof.

It's explained in BDtS, all races use translators.
"Most individuals know only their mother tongue, and rely on machine translation. Modern portable computers allow anyone with a few hundred credits of equipment to enjoy seamless real-time translation of alien languages, courtesy of handheld PDAs, computers in clothing or jewelry, or sub-dermal implants."

Also, there is intergalactic "trade language" that most people in the galaxy know.

How is that supposed to work?

My understanding of the mass effect fields from reading the codex was that they could use energy to make a volume of space act like it contains more or less mass than it actually does.

Dial it up on the deck plates of a ship and instead of giving a pull of a hundred kilos of mass, it instead gives a pull like a planet for artificial gravity. Dial it down in the barrel of a ship's gun, and instead of having to accelerate a hundred-kilo metal slug, the gun's now accelerating the equivalent of a hundred grams with the same power.

Even if you dial the mass down to an astronomically small fraction of the object's normal mass, it's not going to counteract gravity. You'd still need something to provide enough force to oppose gravity to keep something hovering in the air.

Actually, I think they have some sort of auto-translate device.

Female Shepard mentions it when talking to Thane in ME2. "I think my translator glitched for a moment there, what did you just call me?"

Dial their own mass down low enough that they can support themselves with those tentacle things?

I dunno. One suspects that the folks at Bioware aren't exactly physicists.

Ya, I know. Biotics create mass effect fields with the element zero nodes in their nervous system. So, like I said, Jack defelects bullets with mass effects fields.

It's brilliant!

What if they lower their mass to be lighter than the atmosphere? Would they float if they did that?

It's not super-hard SF, but except for the twin central conceits of the mass effect and eezo, they do a decent job keeping it as hard as possible.

You don't want an answer to that question really. Because you're right, you don't see them wearing anything...
