This.....could work.

But only if they make it as a movie, not as a game, if you know what I mean.

Also, they should hold a public vote on their website about whether it should be a man or a woman. Otherwise, people gonna be pissed.

Still, it's nice to see a game that ACTUALLY HAS A PLOT (glances at Far Cry and DOOM) being made into a film.

It will most likely fail, though.
most likely it will be Male becuase it is more canon then female (reason why its on all the trailers, sites, you only see fem shep ingame.

Fucking shoot me. All I have to say is:

I Am Legend, a below-average post-apocalyptic snoozefest that completely miscommunicates the original message of the story? Thor, a superhero tie-in with Iron Man, the sequel of which was merely okay, and it's not even out yet?

Veteran filmmakers that are in the process of adapting three different videogames to Hollywood, and not not one of them is even out?

I'm loving the credentials here. Just loving them.

Good, so one of my favorite games is going to be reduced to an unskippable non-interactive two-hour cutscene by a dude who previously worked on some shitty Will Smith vehicle. Oh, happy day.

Technically the default Manshep is already 'canon'. That's why he's the one who shows up in all the trailers on on the box art.
Ah, but will he save the rachni, push the old lady down the stairs, rape the babies or launch them into the jell-o planet?
D: All of the Above.

Maybe they won't make the story about Shepard at all. I think it would be the best idea on their part because each one of us who played it all have an idea on what Shepard is and the type of person he/she is. It's a vast universe and I'm sure they could come up with an amazing story without interfering with the canon story of Shepard and his/her adventures. Maybe they could just hint at it during the movie, or have it take place in an entirely different time.

So where is that Halo movie thats been in the works for years?

Alot of studios will by the rights to a book, game, or movie without even seriously considering making it. They do it as an insurance policy to get actors and filmakers onto their wagon and use the possibility for future employment and get them under contract. It is also a way to keep other/rival studios from making bookoo bucks and leaving a possible asset they could invest in within reach. I think the whole Halo movie thing is a good example of this.

Movie rights to big games get bought and traded like candy.

I doubt this will happen as there's no way you can squeeze the 70 hours of Mass Effect into a 2-3 hour film without killing what makes it awesome in the first place.

They could do a prequel. I'm sure the First Contact war could make a good movie. If done right.

And that there, is the biggest hurdle. To do it right.

A movie set in the Mass Effect universe would be pretty cool, but having Shepard as the protagonist would be dumb and cheapen the whole concept of the game series. Now an ensemble cast, with each character forced to make similar judgment calls with their own repercussions like players have to make in the game, that would be very interesting.

Dear Lord no. Mass Effect 2 is a masterpiece of gaming as a storytelling medium. I cannot see how a film could do that justice or contribute anything worthwhile to the franchise. Especially considering you've removed the vital aspect of player choice over plot decisions.

I would agree. Something about Shepherd wouldn't be in their best interests.

why does this smell like it will all go horribly, horribly wrong? the sotry will be torn apart and homogenised by executives who can't remember what 'fun' felt like. the whole concept, as mentioned above, of decision making and choice kinda flies out the window in a non interactive medium. this looks, and smells like it will be a turd without peer.

Yeah but didn't the first contact war only last like a day or something. It was more of a skirmish then anything else, and the humans were the aggressors weren't they?

Maybe I'm my alien vs human war stories mizxed up though, but I swear it wasn't really that huge of a war.

Why must they attempt to ruin one of my favorite games? Why?

There is no conceivable way that this could end well. I don't care who directs it, I don't care who the actors are, it will be bad.

I feel like this could be a great movie... if you haven't played Mass Effect. The main problem with game adaptation movies is that it takes something personal, something which you helped to create, and comes up with a different version of it. With a game like Call of Duty, it won't be that noticeable: a few action sequences will be different, but it'll generally be the same cast of characters with or without you. The problem with Mass Effect (and many other RPGs) when it comes to film adaptations is that they rely so heavily on player choice. It's jarring enough to watch the story unfold under someone else's decisions, with characters living or dying in a potentially very different way from the way you think it should be, so a film adaptation will only further shock players when 'dead' characters (by which I mean the ones who didn't make it to the credits on your playthrough) survive.

That said, I have high hopes for this. Apparently, members of the BioWare team are onboard with this, and that will help to avoid the collapse of the plot into a mindless cash-in on a popular franchise. Also, anyone who HASN'T played the games could come to see gaming as a medium with well developed universes, characters, and plots--all too often I find myself telling ignorant dumbasses that yes, games do have plots, and no, they're not just mindless gratuitous violence. I don't expect an ME movie to bring the mainstream out of their ignorance and into the bliss of gaming enlightenment, but it could certainly help if well executed.

In summary, I'm reservedly excited for this, and I suppose that I'll be going to see this when it comes out, for better or for worse.

According to the codex and the way it was described in game, it lasted a while and the Turians took over a whole planet.

There were plenty of battles, and in the second DLC for Mass Effect, the last simulation had you fighting Turians during the war, which leads me to believe the Turians landed troops on the planet.

Plus it ended with a large human fleet coming in, fighting the Turian fleet, and winning.

So yeah, there's plenty of material there for a movie.
