It could be good, could be, but so could nearly anything. Maybe they should stay away from Shep and focus on it being set in the Mass Effect universe? There is a lot of stuff going on in the games that could make fans happy with what they get, not spit all other cannon and still churn out a good movie people who haven't played can enjoy. Shepard doesn't even need to be a focus, maybe just alluded to. Maybe it could be set in the past, maybe focusing on Anderson and how he failed to become a Spectre.

I just hope they don't show it to test audiences before being released. That's what made I am Legend get dumbed down and I wouldn't want to see that happen again.

It doesn't matter if the movie's good or bad. If it's bad, we can all say 'I told you so' and we can all go back to playing the game. If it's good, we can all be pleasantly surprised and appreciate another side of the mass effect franchise.

That being said, I will only watch it if it's Female Shepard (it won't be). Dnw ugly stereotypical space marine male Shepard with his crappy love interests.

I really don't think this would work, for starters Shepard is not so much a character as an entity. An Entity that can be either male or female and can be paragon or renegade and can make any number of varyinc choices and can sleep with whomever it wants. It doesn't even have a first name, it's just a mystical being called 'Shepard'.
However it would have to manifest into some kind of physical form in a movie and if it's male all the femsheps out there would be pissed and vice versa. If male Shepard then romanced Ashley all the truly annoying youtube commentors would ***** and declare it an affront that he would romance anyone other than Tali and then if he romances Tali the rest of the community will ***** that 'Tali's getting all the attention'.
Plus it's fairly obvious Wrex will live given he was popular but again the people that got him killed could be annoyed, plus given that a movie can only be on average two hours long that creates another problem.

See the actual story of Mass Effect when you boil it right down is pretty simple. Evil life destroying machines are coming, you must stop them. That's it. What makes it stand out though was a wonderfully fleshed out universe and brilliantly realised characters. This is something that can be easily brought across in a game that can last up to thirty hours but when cut down into a mere three hour picture would suffer for it.
Ashley would be turned from the strong politically minded and flawed yet still likeable female heroine into just a straight up wisecracking tough girl/love interest. Garrus would no longer be the on the edge law aibing officer and would just become 'the dude'. Wrex would lose his personality and colourful history and become just 'the tough one'. Kaidan would lose his backstory and feel much blander. Tali would just be an engineer with a quirky side and Liara would just be nothing more than a thinly veiled plot device.
Then the Citadel and all other areas would just feel like background locations since to truly experiance the world of Mass Effect the player has to experiance it themselves and in the end we would be left with the watered down remains and just become a basic sci fi epic.

Not saying it would be a bad sci fi epic, as a movie it might actually be okay and it is certainly going to make some money but at the end of the day it's also going to piss a lot of people off because whatever happens in that movie would have to be considered 'canon' and as a result my Paragon James Shepard who did all the good choices and romanced Ashley and did everything how I wanted it to turn out... could well cease to be.

So it's risky to say the least and really, a thirty hour RPG that already feels like a huge epic scale film with romance, intrigue, battles and aliens might be enough.

Gratuitous explosions, anamorphic lens flares, strangely clinical at times (See: The Island)...
I hate to say it... but this is a Bay movie. It has all his trademarks. A Hans Zimmer score wouldn't even be that bad an aproximation of the game music at times.

That could be pretty cool...

But I won't get winded up about it, not till I see a trailer.

Do we have to turn every popular game series into a movie? Let games stay games. And I will never be happy with the choice of Shepard, because I really doubt they'll hire a Wasian guy.

I don't know about this. The screenwriter from I Am Legend? After reading the book I was surprised to find the story wasn't a zombie story but a vampire story. I don't think the script did a particularly good job of re-creating the feeling of the book. A script doesn't have to be slavishly faithful, but it should at least have the essence of the story.

If the writer approaches Mass Effect the same way, I wonder if it will even be something recognizably Mass Effect.

I know the story is pretty good for a video game, but I don't know if it will translate well to the screen.

THe reason most films of games have been shit, is they are either about games with no real story, or they try to differentiate themself from the games story.

I've already played MY Shepard, I'd love to see someonelses Shepard, hell alot of the appeal about tlking to others is finding out what happened to their Shepard. Who gives a flying F*** what canon is, infact fairly sure due to the nature of ME2 canon is only what happens in all versions of the game, so the movie would no more be canon than my personal playthrough, infact it'd be less as its the spin-off.

Hell even if universes with Hard canon, I'd love a bioware rpg version of the film, so i can change it slightly.

They're having video game executive producers be movie executives producers? Are they that thick as to think it's that easy?

I'm mad...

See, I don't think that Mass Effect would be suited for a film. That amount of plot crammed into 2 hours would not work. I suppose a loose adaptation or a separate in-universe story would work, because that universe is just so huge. Another problem is the Mass Effect series' reliance on choice. The main driving force of the games would have to be removed.

Ah well, if the same writers are working on the film, I'm happy.

So where is that Halo movie thats been in the works for years?

*Edit*
Not many people that have quoted me have gotten the point of this post. What I mean by this post is that I bet you that soon as they announced that a Halo Movie was coming out people on here were like OMFG HOLY SH*T but it was never made. There may be a bunch of people that are supposedly in on this but weren't there a bunch of people originally in on the Halo movie as well? Like SERIOUSLY has Hollywood EVER not disappointed? If someone were to post something about a Mass Effect movie to be ACTUALLY FILMING or a place where someone can TRY OUT to be an extra then we have something. Until then its just a rumor no matter how many people we have "working" on this movie. We shouldn't grasp at straws when it comes to a movie about a game that you love. I mean I have heard rumors for a LONG time about a Bioshock movie but you don't see me posting every little thing about it when all they are are rumors. Give me 100% solid proof and I will bite. I haven't seen the Prince of Persia movie yet but I am hoping that one doesn't destroy all hope I have in Video Games being made into Movies.
I'd go even further than that...
I'd argue that until the film is actually in theatres or on DVD/Blu-Ray, then the film doesn't exist. Even if they release trailers, I'm still not entirely convinced that it's going to happen.

On the other hand...
if this does pan out...
then...
FUCK YEAH!

Currently I'm not looking forward to it, but I'll just have to wait and see. If this Prince of Persia film turns out well it might make me slightly more interested as it will have restored my hope in the Video Game->Film idea (which has never worked as far as I can remember)
