"He definitely is. The name, actually just came to me. After I had him for a week or so, it just occurred to me and I liked it. He liked it, too."

Sylas stood up and stretched his arms a bit and looked around. He noticed Vandal wasn't around.

"Have either of you seen Vandal around?" he asked suddenly.

"He walked out, just a couple minutes ago." Brandon answered.

Sylas sighed heavily and ran a hand through his hair. It seemed like he was doing so well.

"I'll wait a minute, see if he comes back."

Magnus helped Beth search the forest for the green Oddish, following Duncan and stalking the forest quietly in search of the Pokemon. After about a half-hour, they found themselves in a clearing behind the Forest Shrine, where the half-moon could be seen shining in the sky, illuminating the forest floor.

"It's pretty calm here..." Magnus said quietly to Duncan and Beth, remarking on how peaceful this section of the forest was. "It's almost got an ethereal quality... Hey, look at that."

Magnus whispered to Duncan and Beth, pointing at something appearing from the trees. Magnus looked down at the grass, and saw a small round form on the ground, fallen over. Once his eyes adjusted to the dim light, he could see that it was the body of an Oddish.. It's skin was green, although it looked pale in the moonlight.

"Is it sleeping?" Beth asked her uncle curiously. "Why is it sleeping? I thought Oddish were awake at night."

"..It's not asleep, Beth." Magnus said solemnly. He stepped forward into the clearing cautiously, Garnet following closely behind him. Magnus approached the body of the Oddish, and knelt over it, examining the corpse.

There was a blood trail coming from the forest, the dark-green chlorophyll-based blood was still wet against the ground. The wound on the abdomen was still seeping slightly, and Magnus saw a piece of arrow, with the head in the wound.

"Hit by a ricochet... Poor thing." Magnus said softly. Beth began sobbing lightly, and hugged Duncan.

"It didn't have to die..." She said through tears. "Its death was pointless!"

Duncan held Beth as she sobbed into his arms. He looked at the dead Oddish, his eyes filled with sadness. The forest was silent save for the sound of Beth's sobs and the steady drip from the fresh wound, "Sometimes Pokemon die Beth; its sad and yes sometimes its unnecessary. What we need to do is understand why this Pokemon died and learn from it."

He looked again at the Pokemon, "This is why we are careful when we hunt, careful with our weapons, because we share the forest with Pokemon and then, if we aren't careful, this is what happens."

Magnus knelt down over the body of the Oddish, and pulled out the arrow-head. Although most of it was covered in greenish blood, Magnus could make out the color of the broken shaft... white. The arrow's shaft was a solid white, the same as the arrow he carried in remembrance of Aari.

Don't jump to conclusions, Magnus... He thought to himself, turning away from the Oddish and standing up. It might not be him... Lots of hunters use light-colored arrows so that they can be found easier. It could just be a coincidence.

As Magnus got up and began walking toward Duncan and Beth, he heard a rustling through the leaves, like that of a Pokemon moving through them. Magnus looked at the source of the rustling, and saw a small pair of antenna through the branches, and then a small pair of insect's wings

"Duncan, look!" Magnus whispered to his cousin. "Beth, look it's.."

From the other side of the clearing, a Celebi flew through the branches of the trees, happening upon the humans and the dead Oddish. It flew down to the fallen Pokemon, and looked it over, then flying towards Magnus, Duncan, and Beth, stopping about a foot in front of each of their faces, and looking them in the eye.

Magnus was humbled by this experience... The Guardian of the Forest, Celebi, was here and it had shown itself to them... The Celebi flew back over to the Oddish's corpse, and its eyes glowed a pale blue before disappearing for a few moments.

When it returned, it had with it the Green Oddish, or rather, the altered-past version of the Green Oddish. It was still injured, but the Celebi had managed to alter the timeline so that the wound was non-lethal, the arrow only penetrating one of the leaves on its head.

"Why?" Was all Magnus could say, staring at Celebi blankly. The Guardian of the Forest disappeared again, leaving the Oddish standing there, wounded, but still living and breathing.

When the bushes had first moved Duncan had stood in front of Beth and raised his rifle. He was then treated to the Pokemon he had searched for his entire childhood. Celebi, the Guardian of the Forest. He lowered his rifle in amazement as the Celebi healed the Oddish; then disappeared back into the night sky.

Duncan looked at the now breathing Oddish, then pulled out a Potion and ran to its side, trying to heal what the arrow had done.

Dani stared at the door that Vandal must have walked out of. "Does he do this a lot? Just wander off?"

"Yeah, he does. It's usually because he's chasing something, but I don't know what that would be in the town."

Sylas bit his lip for a second, "I'm going after him. Be right back."

He zipped up his coat and left the center. The night sky was clear, and the moon shone down brightly enough that he could see relatively well. To his left, a set of fresh, three-toed footprints were outlined in silver light. He started following the tracks, which were undoubtedly Vandal's, until they led him to the edge of the town. A little ways ahead, he saw a silhouette of a scyther sitting on a low tree branch.

As he approached the tree, Vandal glanced back at him over his shoulder, then back towards the moon. Sylas jumped up and grabbed the branch and heaved himself up. After a bit of fumbling and getting his legs positioned, he was sitting next to the scyther. For a couple minutes there was just silence as they both stared at the moon, lost in their own thoughts.

"Are you really okay?" Sylas asked finally.

Vandal paused for a moment and looked at the ground. "I'm . . . better."

"So what's going on with you?" Sylas felt a bit of a rise in his gut, that he might finally get some opening from Vandal.

"I can't be weak . . . around you."

"You're not weak." Sylas assured him. "Is this why you're always fighting?"

"Yeah."

"And why's that? Why can't you be weak?"

He looked away this time. Even in the poor light, Sylas could see that he was shaking. And not just from the cold. "Because . . . I don't want you to leave me."

Sylas was taken aback by this confession. He waited for a second for it to sink in, before quietly saying, "I wouldn't leave you. Why would you think that?"

"Because that's what my family did!" he snapped, turning to face Sylas. There were tears in his eyes. "My swarm abandoned me! Because I wasn't strong enough for them."

Thinking back on the day they met, it started to make sense to him. The unprovoked attack, then the refusal to leave. He wanted someone equal to him.

Sylas slid closer to Vandal and put a comforting hand on his shoulder. "I won't leave you. Ever."

Vandal let out his breath in a quaky gasp. He clenched his eyes shut and teared up in relief, leaning into Sylas. "Thank you."

Dani followed Sylas out a few minutes after, to see where he was going. She saw him head out of town and into a tree. She saw him climbing towards vandal, and decided to walk away and sit on the floor. She stared at the ground whilst she waited for Sylas and Vandal to have a chat.

Once Duncan had finished treating the Oddish's wound with the Potion, Magnus handed Beth a Dusk Ball which he had pulled from his bag.

"This is your chance, kiddo." He told her. "Go see if it'll let you capture it. If not, you'll have to battle it."

"Right." Beth affirmed what her uncle told her. She approached the Green Oddish gently, and knelt down to its level. Hesitantly, she reached out with her hand, and began to pet it gently. "You're so pretty."

Beth looked at the leaf on its head where the arrow had gone through. It seemed that it would not heal properly, and that there would always be a slight hole there, even once the wound had scarred over. She looked down at the Dusk Ball in her hand, and tapped it against the forehead of the Grass-Type Pokemon.

"Oh wow..." She said as the Oddish was beamed into the spherical capsule. She squealed once she felt it jiggle, and dropped it out of surprise. The small red light then stopped flashing, and the clicking noise of the locking mechanism sounded quietly. Beth picked up the Dusk Ball, and stared at it for a moment... This Pokemon was hers... and it always would be. A gift from the Forest.

"Thank you so much!" She squealed happily, hugging her uncles. "Come on, let's go... I want to pray at the Shrine again, to thank Celebi for what happened."

"Alright. We can do that." Magnus said, yawning slightly. He pulled out his phone, and gazed at the time, 10:42pm, and then put it back in his pocket. "But after that, we have to get you home... It's late, and you'll be tired."

Magnus took Beth's hand, and began walking back towards the Forest Shrine, very proud of his niece. As they reached the shrine, Beth knelt in front of it, and began to say a prayer of thanks and gratitude to Celebi.

"Duncan..." Magnus asked his cousin-in-law quietly. "What just happened tonight? Why did Celebi do what it did?"

After several minutes, Vandal's breath evened and he calmed down. Sylas patted him on the shoulder and said, "Let's go back to the center."

He jumped to the ground, followed closely by the scyther, and they started back the way they came. On the way, they saw someone sitting on the ground. As they approached, it turned out to be Dani.

"What are you doing out here?" Sylas asked, feeling like he knew the answer already. He didn't know what to think of her following him, so he was very interested in her answer.

Glad to know we've got readers... But, just a word of advice... It's kind of rude to do what you just did. Not only that, but it also puts a bump in the flow of the story. So, next time, just send a PM, or something... Thanks.

"I don't know," Duncan muttered to Magnus, "Could have been anything. Could have been killed out of anger or spite, could have seen that Beth is one of those who has yet to be tainted by the world, anything like that. This is like questioning whatever Gods are out there though. Celebi is the guardian of the forest and does what it sees fit with it. It must have seen fit to alter time in this instance," he rubbed the bridge of his nose while thinking, "These are only theories though, I have no idea why Celebi did that."

"Alright!" Beth said, once she had finished her prayer, and walked back to her uncles. "Let's go home... I'm sleepy."

Beth yawned slightly, and shook her head to stay awake. Magnus and Duncan began walking back towards Azalea, Beth following shortly behind them.

She heard a faint rustling, again, and looked behind her. Hovering above the Shrine, Celebi had appeared again to her. It flew in towards her, and brushed against her ear, whispering something to her.

Good luck... and be strong. Celebi said to her, before flying away and disappearing.

Beth stood there for a moment, wondering what it could have meant by that, but realized that Magnus and Duncan were far ahead of her, and ran back to catch up with them.

******

The three of them were back in town, and Magnus told Duncan to go ahead and he'd meet them back at the Pokemon Center in the morning.

Beth had already fallen asleep on the walk home, and Magnus had been carrying her on his back. When he got to his brother's house, he let himself in using the key hidden under the mat, and quietly placed Beth in her room, and got her ready for bed before tucking her in. He placed the pokeball containing her newly-caught Oddish on the bed-side table, where she could see it the next morning.

Magnus walked into the living room, and promptly laid down on the couch, going to sleep.

"Well, I followed you out to help you look, but then I saw you talking, so I decided to leave you to it!" Dani said, slightly flustered, thinking he might be annoyed. "Sorry, I didn't think it would be a problem"

"Oh, well thanks for coming then." Sylas said, genuinely thankful. "And thanks for not intruding, it would have been a bad time to say the least."

Dani noticed the sincerity in Sylas' statement, and she was silently relieved.
Good, I didn't annoy him
"Is everything alright now then?" Dani asked, then suddenly thought of something. "Come on, we should be getting ready to turn in, it's late."

"I think Vandal's going to be a lot better now. But you're right, we should get back."

The three of them walked back to the Center quickly, meeting Duncan on the way in. When he got inside, Sylas realized how tired he really was and headed straight off to one of the vacant rooms after capsuling all his pokemon.

The next morning, Magnus was woken up by something small jumping on his chest. He opened his eyes and saw Beth's Oddish jumping on him playfully.

"There you are, Addy!" Beth said, coming into the living room in her pajamas. She grabbed the green Oddish and held it in her arms. "Good morning, Uncle Magny. Did you sleep good?"

"I did..." Magnus said hoarsely, coughing slightly. He yawned loudly, and popped his neck and knuckles loudly. "There we go. How about you, kiddo? Did you sleep well?"

"Yup. I had nice dreams, too. They were about... Um... I don't remember. There was something about a... Hmm." Beth bit her lower lip, trying to remember her dream, but to no avail.

"Most people forget their dreams right away. It's no big deal." Magnus said, starting to get up before stopping as he was about to remove the blanket wrapped around him. He must've been very tired last night, as he forgot he wasn't in his tent... He had slept completely naked on the couch. "Beth, can you pass me my backpack, please?"

"Can't you get it? It's right there." Beth said, pointing to it.

"Well, I'm kind of wrapped up..." Magnus said, slightly embarrassed. "Please grab it for me?"

"Okay." Beth picked up the backpack, and handed it to her uncle.

Magnus began rifling through it for clean clothes, and found that there were none. Someone must have put his clothes into the laundry. He looked around his bag some more, and to his elation, found a clean pair of pajama bottoms and a shirt. He'd have to go commando until his clothes were clean.

"Beth, do you mind leaving the room for a minute? I've got to get dressed, and I'm... not exactly... decent." He asked his niece, his face slightly flushed.

"Sure. Come on, Addy." Beth answered, leaving the room with her Oddish following close behind.

Magnus quickly dressed, making sure not to mentally scar anyone in the house, and folded up the blanket he had slept in that night. He walked into the bathroom to get ready for the day, wondering if his friends were awake yet.

Dani woke up as the rays of the sun peeked around the gap in the curtains and hit her in the eye. Wartortle was inside his shell at the bottom of her bed. She let her Pokemon sleep outside of her capsule once they had grown to like her. Wartortle was the only one to sleep on the bed with her though, probably because he was the Pokemon she'd had the longest.

Dani looked at her watch "7.20!? Screw this, I'm going back to sleep."
With this she rolled over and went back to sleep. When she came back round it was already much later.

Dani got up and got dressed into her clothes. Once she was done she capsulised her Pokemon and left to get some breakfast, and look for the others.
