I LOVE meat! :D

I have eaten (and loved) beef, pork, chicken, lamb, venison, turkey, duck, bear, boar, bison, swordfish, tuna, salmon... the list goes on.

I would never willingly eat synthetic meat, it goes against the entire point of eating meat which is to eat another animal. Freaking hippy scientists trying to ruin everything! We don't need more goddamn food, we need fewer people!
I agree with this man 100%. PREACH IT BRUTHA

If you don't eat meat, what do you prefer?
No
Raised that way, some vague residual animal rights stuff, and after all these years it is not appealing to me.
I'd have no mral objection to eating synthetic, but I might not because as above, I don't like the look or smell of meat. I eat quorn though.
I'm surprised one of the questions isn't the old "If you don't eat meat what do you have for Christmas dinner?".
I do eat dairy (hence why I can't really claim to be veggie for moral reasons), and I love cheese. Not that processed stuff you get in the US - proper, strong, matured cheese.
I've basically got a Mediterranean diet with extra veg, more beans and pulses, and a load of extra cheeses.

Do you eat meat? Yes.
If yes, why? Aside from it being delicious, I appear to actually start getting irritated if I don't eat meat at least once every two days.
Would you eat Synthetic Meat? If it's as good as the real thing, yeah. Including the quality real meat has of calming me down.
Do you have a preference in Meat?(as in both in terms of Animal and individual Dish) Pigs tend to produce all my favourites. Bacon, Gammon, and Ribs. Plain pork is good too, but just not as good.

Hyperbole and missing the point, apparently. The premise of the argument was "If this is truly BASIC EMPATHY, more people would agree with it". My example shows that even BASIC EMPATHY can be overridden by social and material factors, which is how we were able to exploit and mistreat people in the past and present.
Boris Goodenough said:
What I would consider 'basic empathy' is simply the capacity to feel emotionally connected (or feel for) things that someone would consider similar to them. Obviously the degree to which someone feels connected to something can differ from person to person, and can be affected by social norms. I'd say that the reason behind black people being enslaved and not treated well in general has to do with their recognition as a person. If someone recognises something as a person, that tends to be when empathy kicks in, so when black people begun to be recognised as people, that would have been the process of an empathetic generalisation, whereas it was previously seen that only certain denominations of white people were people, now black people were included under that banner too.
So far from basic empathy, animal empathy is about as generalised as you can get, unless one wishes to start empathising with rocks.

I should also note, that 'I feel bad about animals being hurt' is not a moral argument, it is at best, a justification for you not eating meat, and therefore not applicable to anyone else. Though I'm sure you weren't asserting that.
HAHAHA. Okay. So for no reason everyone just decided black people weren't really people, and then they were like, oh I guess they are, and were able to "generalise" our empathy to apply to them.

I think you might be racist. Obviously I can't speak for you, but I wouldn't be surprised if you think black people are lesser human beings.
We aren't the ones attempting to compare black people and animals. But disregarding the ad hominem attacks, let's imagine, for a second, that this took place in the 1820's America, or anywhere, actually. Like somebody else said, those 1800s people viewed black people as no better than animals. They didn't see it as "Oh, enslavement of fellow humans because we're lazy ftw!" They saw it as the same as buying a bull to pull your plow. If you could do that, why couldn't you buy slaves to work your fields?

And that is why your so-called "Material Interests" had overridden their basic sympathy. Because, to start with, slaves weren't human to them, or, actually, revising my previous statements, they were a "lesser breed" of human to the Americans. So, I don't see why this is any different. Just as slaves were once considered animals to us, animals are animals to us, so we wouldn't feel "basic sympathy" at all towards 'em, because "They ain't human!" When we do recognize them as human (Fat chance of that happening), only then are we obligated to sympathize with their plight.

I'm not excusing slavery or anything (it was a real atrocity and lack of humanity on our part), but it's important to understand your own metaphors, and the history behind them, before, you know, attempting to defend them.

EDIT: Whoops, OP: Yes, love meat. It's just delicious and fulfilling. Bacon = <3

Yes, I do eat meat, but I generally take alternatives when available. For instance, I always take vegetarian sausage over the pork/turkey sausage at breakfast. I'll probably spend more time at the salad bar than I would at the place where meat is served. With that said, I have nothing against meat and eat it at least 1-2 times a day.

Would you eat Synthetic Meat?
I think my answer above answers this. Yes, I do have meat substitutes. Generally I prefer the taste and texture of these, especially when used as alternatives to the more greasy versions of meats, such as pork and beef. I generally don't seek out alternatives to poultry, though.

Do you have a preference in Meat?(as in both in terms of Animal and individual Dish)
For the most part, I tend to stay away from anything that isn't poultry or fish unless it is part of something else, such as pizza. I do, however, love chicken, turkey, salmon, and tilapia, not to mention any properly prepared shrimp and crab. Favorite dishes include buffalo-styled chicken wings (or any type of good chicken with some hot or buffalo sauce), salmon encrusted in herbs with a lemon on the side, or tilapia in garlic sauce.

Do you eat meat?
Yep, almost every day.

If yes, why?
Because I like it. If your parents and everyone you know eat, then it's likely you will too.

Would you eat Synthetic Meat?
Probably, it would be a great way to reduce global warming since cattle produce 5x as much 'exhausts' as a car. We'll see what the future brings, I will surely try it.

Horse meat is my favourite, it's lean and more healthy than beef and pork. I never eat any sort of seafood.

I don't eat meat. It's horrible for the environment, and pretty bad for your health when you eat as much as the average person does. We're built more like herbivores that happen to be able to digest meat properly, but most people have that ratio flipped.

The only arguments in favor of meat I ever hear are

-"It's tasty" (I find skittles, nachos, and soda tasty, but I don't eat them but once in a great while. Self control and foresight are good things.)

-"Real men eat meat" (Because nothing proves you are the might hunter like buying pre-cut slabs of meat raised and slaughtered by someone else.)

-"You need protein" (You do, but only around 40 grams a day. People overshoot that by a mile, and it's excess protein is bad for your bones. I haven't eaten meat in five years, I've never taken a protein supplement, and I'm doing just fine.)

If you must eat meat, eat smaller portions less often.

Do you eat meat?

Yes

If yes, why?

I like the taste, and it is normal to eat meat. Humans are natural omnivores, and meat contains essential proteins that you simply cannot get from substitutes.

And it's just a feeling. I'd rather be a tiger than a cow.

Would you eat Synthetic Meat?

Sure, if it has the same taste and nutritional values, and a similar price point.

Do you have a preference in Meat?(as in both in terms of Animal and individual Dish)

I try to avoid animals with cloven hoofs, animals which are ruminants, and bottom feeders. Mostly this comes down to not eating pork if I can at all avoid it.

I also do not like meat that is too filled with adrenaline, which is why I opt for meat that is specifically not the result of ritual slaughter.

As for a specific kind of meat, I am particularly fond of veal.

I eat meat, but I'm a pain in the ass. With food in general, it either tastes according to MY taste or I'd rather not eat at all lol (obviously, that's if I'm not starving, and because I was spoiled with good food hahaha)

As far as (red)meat goes, I enjoy filet mignon parmegianna, poivre verd, madera or with mustard cream; there's also a specific one from a local restaurant, a pretty brutal dish called "mini dish" (though i never figured out why they call it mini, it's one of their biggest dishes...) - filet mignon under ham and melted cheese, fries, mayo, fried banana and "forofa" . That's the DISHES. As far as "only" the meat goes, then I usually only eat in barbecues, especially in a type of barbecue we have in Brazil that we call "rodízio", it works this way: you pay an amount of money, and constantly get served with the restaurant's meats on the table, the waiters keep moving around with chunks of meat and asking if you want it, if you do they cut as many slices as you wish and leave them there for you; for obvious reasons, the best ones are the most expensive ones, the one I love the most (and that I can only afford a few times a year...) is called Vent Haragano; here's their website in English if anyone is interested in learning more about this "genre" of restaurant www.ventoharagano.com (or Google the name), another nice one is Fogo de Chão, which has a few restaurants around the USA as well. "Rodízio" is also the most usual type of restaurant we have regarding Japanese food.

That's my favorite way to eat red meat, I actually rather not eat it until I get the opportunity to savour it in its fullness in a high grade restaurant like Vento Haragano. I heard it say, that one of the reasons the price their is so stupidly high is because the meat goes through all this special treatment that guarantees that the cattle was well tended during it's life, also some of the meat is imported from a certain Japanese cattle.

Edit: I would eat synthetic if tasted good, no, I don't expect it to taste like the aforementioned restaurants but I do expect it to taste genuine at least. Hell, I love McDonald's hamburgers man, that's halfway to synthetic lol

>Do you eat meat?

Yep.

>If yes, why?

Because it tastes great, and humans are omnivorous creatures, not just one-sided lesser evolutions. It's common sense survival for us at this time, we have sharp "meat" teeth for a reason.

>Would you eat Synthetic Meat?

We'll have to at some point. Humans are a very stupid race of beings. Sentient, but stupid. In order to explore the galaxy and terraform new planets, it's going to take any and all help in doing so for this species.

>Do you have a preference in Meat?(as in both in terms of Animal and individual Dish)

Kinda sorta. Really if it tastes good, there's no excuse for me not to eat it aside from poison. I'll have to say the basic 4, cow/turkey/pig/chicken, in that order of preference. Individual dish, ... filet mignon, roasted/baked turkey, honey glazed ham/bacon, and ... chicken.

Okay, I'll bite. Ba dum tish.

Do you eat meat?
Yes.

If yes, why?
Many reasons. Humans spent thousands of years to make it to the top of the food chain. Meat is good and good for you. Animal slaughter isn't half as bad as PETA lies to tell you it is. Even the worst of it is actual abuses which are not legal. The rest of it, is more aesthetic concerns. Animals which are bred for consumption are not equivalent to human suffering.

Oh, and I've seen the videos (I ordered a meat lovers pizza afterwards). Most of it was outright lies. Skinning sheep to get their wool? What moron does that? And the video looked like it was 50 years old from some remote mountain village.

Though, I don't eat meat to "get back" at PETA. I eat it because I like it. I just think they are lunatics with some seriously screwed up priorities among other things.

Would you eat Synthetic Meat?
I don't know. Possibly, but I really doubt it would taste good, so probably not. Taste is important.

Do you have a preference in Meat?(as in both in terms of Animal and individual Dish)
I probably prefer chicken, but I like beef, fish, and pork. Can't say much about other food stuffs. I don't hunt or know anyone that hunts, so I've never really eaten venison. Nor frog legs. I have tried calamari, and it's not half bad.

Yes. I choose to eat meat because it's tasty, a good source of protein and fats, and probably largely blissful ignorance of the realities of the meat industry.
Would you eat Synthetic Meat?
Yeah probably. If it was proved to be safe for consumption, then yeah, prevents battery farming. I'm assuming here that there will continue to be an organic foods market, so actual animals won't be completely replaced.

Difficult to choose. Really does depend on what I fancy at the time, but if I was forced to choose, it would probably be a nice slow-roasted bit of lamb.

Please stop doing this. Anthropogenic Climate change is real, that is the consensus of the scientific community. People can't keep closing their eyes and screaming "IT MIGHT NOT BE HAPPENING" whenever the topic comes up, don't encourage it.

Do your favour neutering of animals?
So again, you're saying that empathy towards black people isn't basic, because during slavery it was overwritten? That sounds pretty damn racist to me. Because I would consider empathy towards all of humanity as basic.

And yes, I support neutering animals, because the alternative to neutering them is culling them, or else having them starve on the streets in the case of feral cats and dogs. Are you going to try and extrapolate this to humans, and claim I'm in favour of eugenics or something? Because I never said animals should have equal rights, like the right to reproduce or to fucking vote or something. Just basic compassion born of empathy like not causing distress, unnecessary suffering or slaughtering them when there are simple alternatives.

Wut?

How in seven hells have you come to this conclusion? Are you talking about insect life dying due to pesticides? Otherwise I have no idea what you mean. In fact the opposite is true in terms of environmental impact, creating a kilogram of meat takes something like 7-10 times as much farmland as kilogram of plant based food.

Having said that, I do like meat. I do draw the line at certain foods, foie gras for example I feel causes needless suffering for what is ultimately a very unhealthy food.
I would eat synthetic meat if they managed to make it economically viable and taste okay.

Yes, I eat meat, beef is my favorite, and about synthetic meat, as long as it doesn't screw with my health any more than normal meat does. I am also not one to go out of my way for a synthetic steak just so I can go "Hey, guess what I just ate, people!"

I eat meat because it is delicious and I'd definitely give synthetic meat a try.

I love steak, so cows are number one for me. Pork is good too, along with chicken and cornish hen. Turkey I'm not crazy about, so I usually only have it in a sammich or on holidays. I never really got into buffalo, deer, duck, or other non-supermarket meats, but I'm sure most are good and I'd try them if given the chance.

Do you eat meat?
Yup, lots of it. As in 1-2 meals a day include meat.

If yes, why?
Why not? Death is a natural part of life. That said, I do prefer to eat animals that I have raised on my farm so that I know that they have had a good life, opposed to the intensively-reared meat that you buy in most shops.

Would you eat Synthetic Meat?
Probably not, because I don't really see the point in it as opposed to eating one of my animals. Synthetic meat will probably be more expensive and not as nice as proper meat anyway. On the other hand, I might try it once just to see what it's like.

Do you have a preference in Meat?(as in both in terms of Animal and individual Dish)
Roast/fried muscovy, barbequed pork, slow-cooked guinea fowl, and roast lamb are all excellent meats in my opinion. Also bacon.

Wow there's a lot of debate about ethics in this thread. I just like meat. Having grown up in a poorer home, I missed out on joys such as chops or steak when I was younger and I am making up for it now.

I don't know if I'd be able to stomach synthetic meat. I hope if it tasted like regular stuff that I would, but I can't see how you could get the same texture as a nice grass fed steak.

I've tried beef, veal, pork, bacon, venison, rabbit, kangaroo, chicken, turkey, duck and some fish. I don't like pork or pig based meats (including bacon, bleurgh!) or fish very much. Some of it is probably that I wasn't given these meats as a child and so they taste unfamiliar and odd to me.

My idea of heaven is a rare steak with a perfect mash and steamed vegies, covered with a mushroom sauce. Perfect.
