I hate dogs...and if someone says is 'gay' to own a cat i will either cut them or tell them gay means happy and THEN cut them.
Hah, yes, good point about the double meaning of "gay". :D Maybe that's what they mean? If not, a cat could certainly teach them, hehe. :p

No, those types of people are shallow idiots who think you should do what they do or you're wrong.

Also, ferrets are cool.

It's like owning a small dog. It's just pretty... girly. Makes me think of Paris Hilton and all I can see is the guy walking down the road with the cat or dog in his 'man bag'. I think the reaction you received was unfair, but saying that, they only said what a lot more people would have kept to themselves.
That mostly happens in Hollywood. And when people are influenced by said place. My cat walks freely in and out of my house at will, i have never had it on a leash, or for that matter brought it with me around town in one of your so called "man bags".
There's nothing wrong with it. I'm not saying that. Thinking about it, there's nothing strange about it. But people who own cats generally:
a) Own a load of them and are social outcasts eg Simpson's Mad Cat Lady
b) Speak to their cat a lot and don't care much for people eg Austin Power's Doctor Evil
c) Are Catwoman.
a) Have one, and I am as far from a social outcast as you can get. Most of the social outcasts I know of play WOW, and dont have a cat. But then thats just in my local area.
b) I think you´ll find that fictional characters in comedy movies are a bad basis for your interactions with real people.
c) Again with fictional characters. You need to get out more.
Imagine your face here. This is how a lot of guys will see you when you tell them you own a cat.
It might seem like a lot of guys in your general area and/or circle of friends. Internationally though, I think you´ll find that broad generalisations like that will get you mostly ridicule and contempt.

I seriously do not get the link to why cats are seen as markers to being gay, someone care to elaborate for me?

I suppose that having a cat helps remove those who are shallow from my life quicker than I would have found out on my own, so there's a positive :D

Okay, so a few weeks ago I was chatting with some friends at work and the topic of pets came up. Everyone talked about their dogs or lack of pets, and then my turn came up - I told them I had a cat, and the mocking commenced.

A few days later, I heard some girls at the pub talking about these guys they dated, and they laughed over one example of a guy with a cat, both agreeing that it was weird for a guy to have one. "He's ******," I believe they said specifically.

Later again, I was talking to this girl at another pub, and told her I had a cat - she also told me that it was kinda weird for a dude to own a cat, but "at least it's not, like, a ferret or rat or something like that."

So here's my question to you, Escapees - is it really that weird for a guy to own a cat? Tell me your gender and whether you think it's weird or not. If you think it is, why?
Tell me where these people live - I will draw and quarter them.
(is it obvious enough that I like cats?)

I had a cat. He died last year at 17. I can only imagine you live in a country where the women complain when their men aren't manly enough (eg. Italy or anywhere with a high Hispanic population).

So remember the good karma you are building up from taking care of your cat, because there are thousands a year that don't get such an opportunity to be cared for.
Wow... my respect to you, Sir. If you managed with 40 cats, I can manage with 12. This world needs more people like us, hehe. :)

Anyways, here's a funny saying for cats:
"Thousands of years ago, cats were worshiped as gods. Cats have never forgotten this." :)

Cats will sit on your lap while you game, Snuggle you when its cold at night, and when your lady is over she'll adore your precious kitty. Nothing really makes a house more a home than coming home to an adoring friend that loves you, and did i mention most women love cats. There is a definite line where owning too many cats is weird. however getting a cat was probably the best decision i ever made.

Im a male, cats are way less work than dogs and can still give out love and affection. I prefer dogs anyways but cats can be friendly and much easier to take care of if you are living on your own.

I can't personally own pets where I live, however if given the choice I would have both. Growing up my family always had both cats and dogs, but the cats never lasted as long as the dogs (I should say dog, because she lasted a good 16 years). My cats just didn't stay around, mostly they died, other times we just couldn't find them again, the most recent one is with my sister in Saskatoon, and I hope he lasts a long time because I like visiting him.

So no, it isn't weird, but personally if given the option I would have one of each (I love animals).

Of my friends, 2 own cats. One has a cat nammed, "Mr. Kitty" and he is the biggest redneck I know, prone to drinking, getting into bar fights, and owning enough guns to take over a small nation. The other has owned a string of cats. He can shoot the head of a quarter with a handgun from 100 feet, build his own silencer, is an expert gunsmith, catch pigeons with his bare hands, and once fought 4 guys bigger then him at the same time. So no, I don't see cats as an un-manly thing to own.

I have two cats, though they're technically my sisters. Never wanted pets myself...
I wouldn't call it weird.

One of my best male friends has two cats and is very straight. Also, my man would have one as well, but I'm allergic to the buggers. Love 'em, but can't be around them. He had to settle for a dog.

I'm a dude and I have a cat who's a dude. We sit around together in a dudely fashion. He does his thing, I do mine, and when we come around to one another and go "hey, what you up to?" it occasionally happens that we're both headed to the same place. I mean, we both like a lot of the same shows; he's fuzzy and lowers my blood pressure, and he can't scratch his own belly. The whole thing's win/win.

I'm a guy and I don't think it's weird to have a cat. My cat actually died two months ago and it was the best pet I ever had.

But to tell you the truth...I think all my best friends in high school (all of whom were girls) actually liked my cat more than me...

This guy seems normal.

Male: it's ok for a guy to have a cat.
