Wait... what?

I always thought a cat was about as normal a pet as you could get.

Oh well, gay or not, I'm male and when I finally have a house of my own there will be at least one cat in it.

Thats absurd, why would they mock any man who owns a tiger or the like. It is a tiger isn't it?

In all seriousness i kinda understand where they are coming from, but its retarded. Also, ferrets are awesome. Really good for hunting rabbits.

Also, male and i don't like cats. But thats a personal preference.

I prefer cats over dogs anyday. Atleast cats have they own will and make a much more deep relation. I own two cats myself, being male, and I don't see any distolerence about it where I come from.

Okay, so a few weeks ago I was chatting with some friends at work and the topic of pets came up. Everyone talked about their dogs or lack of pets, and then my turn came up - I told them I had a cat, and the mocking commenced.

A few days later, I heard some girls at the pub talking about these guys they dated, and they laughed over one example of a guy with a cat, both agreeing that it was weird for a guy to have one. "He's ******," I believe they said specifically.

Later again, I was talking to this girl at another pub, and told her I had a cat - she also told me that it was kinda weird for a dude to own a cat, but "at least it's not, like, a ferret or rat or something like that."

So here's my question to you, Escapees - is it really that weird for a guy to own a cat? Tell me your gender and whether you think it's weird or not. If you think it is, why?
What a bunch of imbeciles... I've owned cats for my entire life (gone through 3). I'm male.
How does it make you gay if you're male and own a cat...
Goddamn some people in this world are just pathetic nitpickers.

I'm a guy and I am more of a Dog person, but I don like cats. I honestly never knew people thought they were gay.

To me dogs are more fun to have and mess around with, whereas cats don't need much attention.

Edit: In some ways cats are more manly.

Man here. Truth be told, I have a cat and dog. My cat is relatively well mannered and loving, so any butt-nugget that tells you cats are for fags 1) Probably don't like taking care of anything and 2) Probably slurp some bratwursts with extra relish >=)

I own a cat.
Kills mice, looks mostly after herself, and seeks out attention when SHE wants it -- nothing like the high maintenance blind slavery dogs have to their owners.

Besides, girls like cats ^_^

As for "girly"? Other "people" who own or at least like cats:
Ernst Stavro Blofeld
Doctor Claw
Doctor Evil
The Godfather
Gargamel
Gary Seven
Pope Benedict XVI

I have couple of water turtles. By this kind of "logic", that must mean I'm a necrophiliac or something, right?

It's like owning a small dog. It's just pretty... girly. Makes me think of Paris Hilton and all I can see is the guy walking down the road with the cat or dog in his 'man bag'. I think the reaction you received was unfair, but saying that, they only said what a lot more people would have kept to themselves.
I don't know anyone who bring their cat around town like Hollywood halfwits, it's not something the average cat-owner does.

There's nothing wrong with it. I'm not saying that. Thinking about it, there's nothing strange about it. But people who own cats generally:
a) Own a load of them and are social outcasts eg Simpson's Mad Cat Lady
b) Speak to their cat a lot and don't care much for people eg Austin Power's Doctor Evil
c) Are Catwoman.
That's quite a generalization, and it's very untrue. :)
People with cats are not that different from others, and if they were, it wouldn't be in a bad way.
Okay, I'll be fair to what I actually know of cat owners and cats in general. There is option D), which is probably the choice of most non-celebrities.

D) Supply food and water and end up wondering if they own the cat or if the cat owns them.

I've often been left thinking that for the five minutes a week the cat seems to want some attention off the owner, is it really worth all the money you pay for its maintenance? Some people have told me they really like the arrogance of their cat and that it looks like it has a superiority complex.

Seriously? Maybe that's why some people think single male cat owners are weird.

I think I will get a cat when I live on my own.
Cats are less work than dogs but are still good company. I still live at my mom's, who has a cat, that is currently being lazy on my bed.
I might also get a parrot.

Of course the cat doesn't actually "dominate" their owners but a good cat owner will be quite happy to let them think they "rule the roost".

While they don't actively seek attention like a dog, let me tell you they are well worth the maintanence (which is very little btw)..They just have a very different type of personality to dogs that takes a while for some people to warm to. Like alot have said here its the fact that the cat seems to have more a mind of its own, when compared to a dog and I, like alot of others find this very endearing..They love you, just not like dogs do.

Whats wrong with owning a ferret? Its the 3rd most popular pet in America.
OT I am male and I used to have two cats but right now I have a bird and a dog in my home.

Cats are just quite effeminate creatures really. You can't imagine roughly playing with a cat and being manly with one, all you can really do is stroke one or pick it up or other equally un-masculine pass-times. If a guy was single and owned a dog you kind of get some sympathy votes for that because it like the guy saying that he wants company and loyalty without compromising himself or his masculinity. You can play rough with a dog, but you can also imagine that guy having moments of sensitivity with the dog - girls will assume that you will want to treat them as your pet is being treated regardless of whether you actually just think dogs are lame or w/e. They're like bloody Sherlock Holmes, only they never switch off and decide that EVERYTHING'S important.

In conclusion, despite the fact that actually owning a cat is in some ways less queer than owning a dog and that it doesn't REALLY reflect on your masculinity, it gives that impression to girls. Hence the reaction you've got from everyone.

I'm a guy, and i don't think owning a cat makes you in any way "weirder" than the next guy. Whats wrong with wanting a low maintenance pet? I have a dog, and after seeing how much work it is to keep it, i am leaning more towards getting a cat when i am older.

Cats are awesome. It's not weird to own one, no matter who you are. [sub](Actually it might be weird to own a cat if you're allergic to them, but my point about cats being awesome still stands)[/sub]
