I have two cats as well, the original reason for this is I was utterly scared of Dogs when I was younger, now I merely dislike them.

I think that might be the reason why myself.

I just think cats are a more feminine animal. There's nothing wrong with it if you're a cat person. It's just not the norm so people will call it weird.

I think it is normal, I want a cat when I can. My mate has a cat...he acquired a cat...it pritty much just moved in.
But I would say I would not date a man with a cat...But i would not date any man, I am not gay.

I have 8 cats (not all mine, technically 3 of them are mine) and they are quite possibly the best pets ive ever had. Ive had all of them and nothing compares. they are clean, can be trained to no shit inside and stuff, they are great if you need some comfort and companionship. also, they dont fucking bark. Major plus.

I'm a straight male, and I own a cat. It's name is Butters. I don't find wierd to have a cat while living alone.

Female, have a cat. This argument has some backwards logic. So a man having what is perceived as a feminine pet makes them gay? So, preferring to have more "feminine" company means they DON'T prefer women? 8D

I'd like to hear these ignoramuses' opinions on less usual pets. What would owning a snake make you - a pervert or frigid...

This thread doesn't contain any legitimate reason to think less of a guy because he owns cats or prefers them to dogs. This is because there is none. I can't imagine how dull and/or stupid people who think a guy owning a cat is 'weird' are.

It comes down to some primitive masculine power fantasy that people think about subconsciously (some may even do it consciously).

Dogs are powerful, active, subservient pets that make a guy look more masculine by way of being pack leader to a loyal follower. Cats are independent, self-reliant, small companions that don't take orders and therefore give the man less of a chance to be dominant, which to some simple-minded people equates to masculinity.

It's a really primitive and stupid way to view animal companionship, but a lot of people do it.

Male.

Wat? Having a cat is weird now? I fucking love cats! They are the superior pets on this planet.

My kitty is evil too, it will destroy anything that dares to wake it out of it's sleep or try and take it's food away.

I have a cat and three dogs.
I wouldn't want to hang out with dimwits who thinks it's weird for a guy to have enough responsibility to take care of a pet.

You can't imagine roughly playing with a cat and being manly with one, all you can really do is stroke one or pick it up or other equally un-masculine pass-times.
Never knew a fairly tame cat did you. Mine loves wrestling with my arm and to a casual observer it might look quite brutal. It always pulls in the claws on command though. I'd post a pic if I could find it.

This pretty much hits it..These are the 'neandethal' types that like you say, still exist. Not all dog owners are like this but quite a few are and have this bizarre hatred for cats.

I even got rid of an ex-girlfriend because she wanted me to get the cats to sleep outside of my room..Well the cats (only had 3 at the time) wouldn't have had a bar of that so she gave me the ultimatum..It was so funny to see her face when I instantly picked up my beautiful burmese Clyde and gave him a hug and a pat. I chose my cats over a woman and no regrets because really how could I be with a woman that didn't respect something I loved.

Growing up, my family had a cat and later also a dog. The cat later died and was followed by another cat. Eventually the dog died and after some time there were two cats in the house.
So, I'm quite used to being around both dogs and cats and while I've always enjoyed the company of our cats, I've never seen them on the same level as dogs.
To me, a cat can be a pet, but a dog can be a friend and a companion. If that's not what you want, there's nothing wrong with just a cat.

As for the reactions from women, I wonder if it can be a subconscious analysis about traditional gender roles. Something along the lines of "If he can't be the leader of a dog, how can he be the leader of a family". It's just a stray though, don't read too much into it, please ladies.

I'd also like to chime in with a good old comparison between cats and dogs.

A dog thinks: "Wow, these people feed me, entertain me and keep me warm and safe. They must be gods!"
A cat thinks: "Wow, these people feed me, entertain me and keep me warm and safe. I must be a god!"

Never knew that it could be considered wierd. I love animals and although I find cats to be kinda boring compared to dogs it still completely normal to have one. Even if you`re a male.

I am a male who has a cat pet.

I've always viewed them as being rather "manly" pets. Low maintenance, mousers and just plain adorable.

I don't particularly like cats, I'm a dog person, but I wouldn't consider it "weird" for a guy to have a cat. First time I've ever heard about guys with cats being weird.

Also: male.
