MEN SHOULD ONLY HAVE DOGS. THEY SHOULD TAKE THEIR DOGS TO THE PUB AND WATCH THE GAME AND DRINK BEER WITH THEIR FRIENDS AND TALK ABOUT WOMEN/PUSSY/BOOBS WITH THEIR FRIENDS.

Yeah, you'll find that people who say things like 'men owning cats are weird' usually spend their nights watching bawdy television programmes with a bottle of deodorant shoved up their arse.

Male. I think its just when someone thinks of a cat they dont really think scary or manly. Have you ever been walking and crossed the street to get away from a cat because it might attack you.

Why the hell is it considered weird for a guy to own a cat? Is there some kind of guy-feline taboo that I'm not aware of?

Male and a cat owner. His name is "Halfro". He will "bark" on command and loves to play fetch. The only downside is that he loves to chew on the window blinds.

People who make fun of you (and mean it) for owning a cat can go F themselves. Course thats just my opinion.

Male, cat owner. Its actually quite handy, because my old house *had* a bad mouse problem a few years ago. Plus, I don't like associating with the filthy peasents, and they tend to reveal themselves quite readily around my cats.

So, there seem to be a few ideas popping up again and again in this thread.

1) First and foremost, cats are one of the most popular pets in America, and in fact around the world, and anyone who thinks it's somehow "wrong" for a guy to own one is a judgmental moron/asshole, and not really worth your attention.

2) Cats are seen as feminine, clean, low-maintenance, arrogant in a way that is somehow charming, somewhat lazy, and adorable.

3) Dogs are seen as masculine, relatively high-maintenance, loyal, hard-working (sometimes), and fun to play with.

I really don't see how anyone can claim that one is objectively better than the other. They're different kinds of pets, and they speak to different pet-owner personalities. And this doesn't even account for the fact that there are several different breeds of both cats and dogs, each with their own subtle, and sometimes not-so-subtle differences in personality and level of dependence.

Personally, I think it boils down to "dogs are more fun, but cats are less needy." That's kind of a gross oversimplification, but again, it's just my opinion.

I'd actually kind of like to examine the social impact of owning a cat or a dog, but I don't really have the time to dedicate to proper research. I think there's problems with the simple statement of "cats are feminine, dogs are masculine," and what it says about our assumptions of gender roles. I guess this means women are supposed to be demure, aloof, self-reliant and independent, cute, and generally prefer to coax someone into doing something for them than doing it themselves. Meanwhile, men are supposedly comparatively less intelligent but very loyal, hard-working, love to goof around just for fun, but you kind of have to train them to get them to do what you want. Some of that doesn't sound so bad, but some of that sounds kind of offensive.

Anyway, although "a guy who owns a cat is clearly gay" is an asinine statement, I can understand why a woman might prefer a man who owns a dog. Since the general perception is that cats are so much easier to care for, if a guy owns a dog, especially a well-behaved one, that's a more useful package of information for a woman. It means he's nurturing, patient, and kind of a goof. Let's face it, you have to have some appreciation for silliness to love your dog, and all the stupid, hilarious shit it does. Meanwhile, if you own a cat, all she can really tell from that is that you like company, but not too much. It's just less useful as a gauge for what kind of person you are. It's almost more useful as a gauge for the kind of person you're not than the kind of person you are.

Besides, how many people in this thread have said that they prefer cats because they're too lazy to keep up with a dog? That's fine, but keep in mind laziness generally isn't seen as an attractive quality by anyone, regardless of gender or sexual orientation.

Okay, so a few weeks ago I was chatting with some friends at work and the topic of pets came up. Everyone talked about their dogs or lack of pets, and then my turn came up - I told them I had a cat, and the mocking commenced.

A few days later, I heard some girls at the pub talking about these guys they dated, and they laughed over one example of a guy with a cat, both agreeing that it was weird for a guy to have one. "He's ******," I believe they said specifically.

Later again, I was talking to this girl at another pub, and told her I had a cat - she also told me that it was kinda weird for a dude to own a cat, but "at least it's not, like, a ferret or rat or something like that."

So here's my question to you, Escapees - is it really that weird for a guy to own a cat? Tell me your gender and whether you think it's weird or not. If you think it is, why?
im male and own 3 cats, this shows how petty and stupid people can really be dont worry man

Luckily I don't have this problem.

I'm a man who hates Cats.

If given the opportunity, I would launch one into space with a kick.

Male. I have a dog and two cats (brother and sister). I've had the dog since I was a kid, and adopted the cats from a friend while in college. Both pets have their pros and cons, it all depends on what you want and what you can deal with. I'm a vet tech and I love animals, so it's hard for me to not see the fun in all of them and I'll probably end up with more pets at some point. So, no, I don't think it's weird for guys to have cats, I think it's more weird for people to be such pricks about it.

I'm a guy and I own a cat, I don't see what the problem is.

Her name is Tinkerbell :D

She is freaking evil though, she's pure white, and get this: We have her declawed in the front, yet she still dashes around and somehow manages to climb 3/4's up the doorframe and HANG there o_O

I like cats. It's never been a problem for me, but then again, I live in the Netherlands. No one I know is shallow enough to judge you on the pet you have. In fact, the whole story about those 2 girls that called guys with cats faggots? I can't imagine judging someone on that..

Also, everyone who I know who has a dog also has a cat. There are many with just cats, and a few without pets at all.

Jeez. The need for people to label others is so frustrating. No, a dude liking or owning cats is not weird. How ridiculous can people get?

You might as well say men who eat cheese are gay, or girls who wear red are lesbians. Such a random thing to decide makes someone gay or not.

In my experience, people with "gaydar" are rarely ever correct unless they are gay. That's because gays, lesbians or whatever, are individuals just like every one else. They don't all wear mankinis and lip synch to Beyoncé songs.

I've read several replies in here about girls being attracted to guys with dogs or girls being scared off by spider-pets. Please tell me you're joking? It's a freaking pet! It should not be of influence on friendships, and definetly not relationships.

And don't take this the wrong way, but whilst 'likes dogs' is a valid argument since it describes personality, 'has a dog' is not a pro, but just sad and really, really shallow.

i have an american bandogge, i've never really been into cats but i don't see the problem with guys owning cats ... i've just always liked dogs

BUT i have heard my mate get a little heat for being a cat owner LOL nothing like "******" ... but they did say a guy with a big potentially dagerous dog seems alot more manly

alot of people do move out of the way when i walk through the street with my dog cammy .. i'm told she looks extremely intimidating but when i look at her i just wanna hug her and give her a real big kiss :D .. my wittle cam cam ... remember when she was a little pup trying to cuddle in with me under my bedsheets now she's big enough to fit my whole head in her mouth loool awwwwww :3 ..... yeah not very many there but i do notice alot of cat owners tend to be more passive humans .. most dog owners i know including myself are active alpha male pricks that drink beer and take boxing lessons haha

must be the stereotype
