Maybe I'm jumping to conclusions because you posted a slipknot song as one of your ex favorites, but it could be because you weren't listening to many good metal bands.
HERESY!

What is good metal then?
All hail Sabaton! Easily the most entertaining metal band out there, They take up half my I-pod.

metal is a very stale genre
Nope, its acctually broad.
Broadness does not equal progression.

I'd listen to a lot of it, from some power metal, to doom, death and even some black. While you do have a lot of different subgenres, they rarely step out of their boundaries, sure someone will add synths now and then, but that's hardly a musical revolution. Also, the way metal works, as one thing takes off, you'll get a lot of very similar bands. Think about what happened when Children of Bodom first took off, spawned a whole wave of exactly similar bands in Finland, same could be said when the whole folk metal thing took off, again, slight variation, but overall it was always the same story. I guess the problem is, every few years you'd get one interesting band, and then a wave of similar things.

I understand the appeal of it, but I personally don't see them pushing the musical envelope, experimenting with their sound and trying to create something new, as much as keeping the whole genre alive.

Don't get me wrong, I did listen to the damn thing for quite a bit, I just go tired of it, at one point, I felt like there was really no new ground to explore.

Here is some slightly more underground metal to warm your bones!
I have included some of the death metal "Old Gods" if you will. Immolation, Suffocation and Morbid Angel were all particularly innovative. The Death Metal renaissance that's happening right now in Australia and New Zealand has all ultimately come from Immolation. Defeated Sanity are really just Suffocation worship.. Etc.
Cephalic Carnage's earlier work was more along the linds of grindcore with a hell of a lot of avant-garde experimentation and jazz thrown in. The track I included here is probably my pick for the best representation of that balance. Check out the album "Lucid Interval" if you like that track.

I will be back later with some non-metal stuff. I will probably post up some jazz, funk and world music later on (modern interpretations of ancient tibetan buddhist mantras, traditional jewish music, etc.)

Let me know if you dig any. ^_^

Amon Amarth (mentioned only once? oh come on guys, Amon is epic band)
Ensiferum
Eluveitie
Insomnium
Turisas
Finntroll
Crimfall

and ofc Sabaton which was mentioned few times. One can't really listen to metal and not like Sabaton.

I think that if you're concerned what genre you're listening to, you're doing it wrong.

Maiden, Bodom and Metallica were the first bands I listened to and I still love them, but I listen to Bob Dylan just as much nowdays.

I have to wonder... Why the hate against Slipknot? They are good!
I've got to say I agree with this guy. I'll also say that if you are almost ashamed to be not liking metal, try listening to many of the different variants of it - it is a very diverse genre. Nightwish, Iron Maiden and Dream Theater are my recommendations.

O.T. I go through phases of different bands or genres. At the moment, I am listening to a lot of progressive rock, but I may be listening to Ska Punk this time next month, but I always return to the genre eventually. As I said, I revisit short phases.

I have for the last three years listened to most genres, mostly metal. My favorite bands have during the last years been In Flames, Children of Bodom, and Trivium. I have become more appreciative of the more extreme death metal music lately, such as this:

I also listen more to metalcore bands, such as Maylene And The Sons Of Disaster and Parkway Drive:

I was a "hate everything that's not metal" kinda guy when I was younger but Metal has started to get blasted away from me by the loud beats of Techno, Drum n' Bass etc.
Thats ok.
I used to be heavy into that music too. I screamed along in my car until my throat bled.
And now I rare put any of it on. Heck, I'm listening to 'We No Speak Americano' now, on top of a diverse group of bands like Bedouin Soundclash, Simon and Garfunkle, Pendulum, Rage Against the Machine, The Pinker Tones, They Might Be Giants, and a host more.

I think, for me, I used to be a fairly angry person. And when I got over being angry, that music didn't suit me anymore. I still listen every now and again, for old time's sake, but over-all I'm just done with it. I grew out of it.

So enjoy you new tastes, remember your old favourites fondly, and just enjoy the music (Whatever it may be).

There is a place for both metal and techno in the "doofy probably white guy" music pantheon.

I should suggest Sabaton and In Flames.

I went throug the same phase. I was always a metal head but then I discovered that I liked blues more. You'l get use to it eventually, but people who have allways identified you as a metal head will have a bit of a clusterfuck.

When I was younger I used to be one of those METULZ AND ONLY METULZ!! people, but I kinda mellowed out a bit. I still love metal, but I renewed my love for 3rd wave ska and other things.

Oh, and on metal, ignore anyone who says 'DATZ NOT METULZ!!!' just because it's not heavier than a lead elephant and from somewhere in Scandinavia. There are a lot of that kind. Slipknot are definitely metal.

with Bomb the Music Industry being, IMO, the greatest band ever.
This is the truest thing I've ever seen on the Escapist. Glad that someone else discovered this band as well. Tell me, was it because of Mitch Clem?

Agreed! I listen to everything from Katy Perry,Lady gaga and Lily Allen to Slipknot and Trivium and ofc Deadmau5 =D but the metal part of my music collection have started to get smaller in comparison to everything else.
Thats not even close to everything, thats just a bunch of mainstream artists.
I couldn't name all the band I like but if makes you feel better I'll name some non mainstream bands...
Cage the Elefant, Champion, Blood Red Shoes, The Qemists, Slagsmålsklubben, Familjen, RJD2, Reel Big Fish, Raddox, Polarkreis 18, Peter Fox, Hot Chip, Hadouken! Dr. Dog, Infected Mushrooms, Interpol, DJ Shadow and loads of other bands... Check them all out! Some of these bands might be mainstream I just picked some of the more unknown bands.

And mainstream =/= bad music only because something i popular it's not bad (I agree that there is much shit on the mainstream scene) but not everything.

I've spent the last 8 years on the internet debunking this same statement almost every single day. No, I really don't have a life.

Just because Slipknot uses distorted guitars, fast drumming and some screaming doesn't mean they fall under the metal genre. They play hard rock music. Now, there's nothing wrong with that. I really don't get why people get so defensive about it. When I say 'Slipknot isn't metal', that's always translated to 'I hate Slipknot and that's why they're no metal'. I don't hate them. I don't really like most of their songs, but I don't hate them. I appreciate them for what they are: hard rock. There is only one thing that dictates the genre of a band: the musical structure. Listen to Slipknot's guitar lines. They follow the exact same chord patterns as every standard rock song ever made. Think away the speed at which they're played, and tune down the distortion a bit, and you got yourself a perfectly normal U2-ish rock song.
Actual metal bands don't even need distortion and/or screaming to be metal. Their different musical structure makes them metal. Most power metal bands are no where near as 'heavy' as Slipknot, but they're still metal.

Example: when you play a piece by Mozart on a fully distorted electric guitar, someone screams the bassline and the drums are a blastbeat, are you playing metal? No. You're simply playing classical with unconventional instruments.

So when a band plays a hard rock song, only with heavier guitars, harsher vocals and faster drums, they are still just playing hard rock.

Your point is based on Children of Bodom, and you even thought they were something "new" when their acctually thrashy/power metal with screaming vocals, they were not new in any way. You dont really know the genre.

Have you ever listened to recent black metal bands? Blut Aus Nord,Negura Bunget,Deathspell Omega,Darkspace,Nivathe,Alcest,Klaubatamann,Ruins Of Beverast, Wolves In The Throne Room,Agalloch? This modern wave of black metal bands is fusing black metal with avant-garde,ambient and even jazz and shoegaze, whilst writing progressive music with unique song structures, these bands broke away from the black metal stereotype of the second wave.

Your probably not even familiar with old school death metal, where bands like Atheist,Gorguts and Cynic pushed the boundries too.
Not to mention Devin Townsend, who still pushes metal creativity to new limits with every album he puts out.
