Just listen to Carcass, Devian, Legion of the Damned, Witchery, and Demolition Hammer and get back into it.

I've talked to a few people who liked Slipknot when they're younger and then just grow out of that into more metal or something else altogether.

I have to wonder... Why the hate against Slipknot? They are good!
Don't listen to those people, man. They're allowed to have their own opinions, of course, but there's a difference between "I personally don't like Slipknot." and "Slipknot is shit lol they have no talent."
Ha! You're clearly not one to frequent metal forums, wherein SlipKnot is the butt of every joke and generally considered a disgrace to the name of metal. Not that they're regarded as legitimate metal band in light of never having produced an album which is metal from start to finish.
Actually, I used to religiously go on a metal forum until it devolved in "Your taste in metal is shit unless you only like purely obscure, European (Swedish, Finnish, etc.) death metal bands."
Agreed, that is absolutely my least favourite part of the metal community.

Besides, claiming you listen to nothing but a specific genre of music isn't something to be proud of. I mean, I love stuff like Strapping Young Lad, Machine head, Periphery and about a bajillion other metal bands, but I also love Daft Punk, Pearl jam, some Jazz and even some old funk.

Diversity is a great thing.

I am saying most metal music is meaningless lyrics with loud music.
Your types are just as bad.

OP is 17 and looks foolish in those glasses in his picture, diagnosis:

no real musical taste, just likes what his peers like
new sounds included cause its hip/in/a girl he likes likes it

end result: typical teenager, nothing to see here, move along
Riiiight.... I like it because it's popular not because it's good. I know there are people that does it but I'm not one of them I spend much of my time searching for good new music and once in a while I find gems like this

<youtube=y8HC_Sno_tA>

But it have 2k views so it's to mainstream for you right?
not mainstream, not very good either

I was like that, genres as a whole dont really appeal to me any more. If a song is my kind of good, I like it simple :)

Greetings escapists, first post here for me but i've been a long time lurker, regularly visiting and having a peruse after watching the latest zero punctuation. I saw this thread though and I had to post - because i've experienced exactly the same phenomenon.

I was more a symphonic metal man, i.e. Nightwish or the more mainstream avenged sevenfold but also loved the classic heavy metal - maiden, priest, megadeth etc. I was a metal or nothing man.

However, in the last year my music tastes changed drastically. I love a bit of deadmau5, chemical brothers etc. Basically anything electronic/techno/house.

My favourite is wolfgang gartner - see

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bt4H7S0Yc_0

(fast forward to 1 min in to get rid of the introduction). If you like that, also try looking up Skrillex - slats slats slats.

I think this is because I've always loved music that gets my adrenaline going, music that makes me feel alive so to speak. I love all the different instruments in metal in the same way I love the construction of electronic and house. Its all great music, but your tastes probably havent changed as much as you think they have - you're listening to music that is similar in construction, if not in sound. Just brain farting here though, could be completely wrong!

The bread and butter of my music library is Avenged Sevenfold and Pendulum.
Afterlife gives me chills whenever I hear it (especially when the Rev sings), and Plastic World is the only Pendulum song I don't like.

Genre wise I like Metal (and most of it's sub genres), some classical music, provided it's epic (see Requiem for a Tower) and Pendulum (Which doesn't have a genre).

I also love cheesy songs.

I've started to expand my horizons to cover different genres, but metal will always be numero uno in my heart.

My taste changed dramatically when I was around 16, with the aid of the internet!

I just wanted to say that Amon Amarth and Dethklok are some EXTREMELY good bands that are a very easy jump from stuff like slipknot. They do have very powerful, low death growls, but honestly just listen to them a few times and it seems to click.

I listened classical music when I was I child, the I started metal (That really heavy 220 bpm yelling and destroying instruments) ended up to melodic death metal and then from that gain back to classical music and now days I am setteled on orchestra music/modern classical (Philip glass, Clint Mansell etc..) while I was teen I always had some classical music on my Mp3 player... I realized I only listened metal because I wanted to fit in, but I didn't, because I didn't listen them same bands they did... Sigh... (Pantera, Metallica, Iron Maiden and AC/DC) So I decided to just return to the music I knew I would enjoy...

metal is a very stale genre, it's a lot of the same... so you're bound to get bored with it eventually. I stopped listening to it too... however there are a few bands that I never mind checking out now and then.

When I was a teenager I used to only listen to punk. Now that I'm a bit older my tastes have broadened. I'm a musician myself (I play the piano and I sing) so I appreciate all forms of music. I probably listen to alternative rock more than anything else, but I'm starting to really enjoy classical music. I don't like a lot of pop, but I do frequently listen to it because a lot of pop songs are difficult to sing well. I respect the artists that can pull it off, even if I don't particularly care for their music.

I can agree though that lyrics isnt metals strong point, but there are bands with a deep sound rather than midnless chugging.
I'm going to heavily disagree with you here.
Listen to Nuclear Assault's Critical Mass and Annihilator's Maximum Satan.
Those are only a few songs in the huge amount of songs with intelligent lyrics.
And just to show of, know any songs about chess?
Check out Knight Jumps Queen by Annihilator.
