Metal is not dying at all. It's mutating and receding from the mainstream. I find this to be a fantastic solution to the outcrop of crappy kindof metal bands the 2000's spawned. This does IMO include Slipknot to some degree.
Black metal seems to be maturing as a subgenre, with a large number of fantastic fusions recently popping up.
Tech death is.... alive... and awesome. If only Necrophagist would release their damn third album.....
TL;DR: Metal is dying in the mainstream as a method of purging itself from commercial influences. Or something like that.
EDIT: Oh right, two part question. I was a listen-only-to-metal-and-mutations-of-it kinda guy a couple years ago, and since then I've done my best to expand into other genres. I suppose most notably would be punk, with Bomb the Music Industry being, IMO, the greatest band ever. It's nice to not pay much attention to the groupings of what you listen to, though, and to try to focus on the individual artists and groups that you are fond of.

I have to wonder... Why the hate against Slipknot? They are good!
Though they do sound quite different from any other popular metal bands the majority of metalheads I've talked to about them dislike the addition of a second drum kit and a turntable. Also many find the songs themselves to be.. well.... dull and soft when compared with death/black metal.
There is the elitist factor, wherin many don't like Slipknot because they are afraid for being mistaked for angsty 13 year olds. You know, that one probably makes up for a lot of it. Metalheads are kindof dicks like that.
