I guess I'm more of a "groove & thrash Metal" kind of guy. I think its kind of silly and pretentious to have 40 different names for basically the same thing. Metal is got to be the only genre of music that does this.

This is a short list of solid metal. Its kind of a safe list but fuck it.

Wow ive never heard anyone say they liked the new slipknot albums the most. Im curious man being a big slipknot fan, what is it that you like more about the new stuff?

Well, don't get me wrong, i love all their stuff, but vol3 and All hope is gone stand out to me because their more musically technical, with the guitar solos and extreme riffing in songs like the title track of All hope is gone. Also i prefer the more melodic approach some of the songs on the later 2 albums have in comparison to their more brutal, riff based style of old.

thats cool man i can see where you are coming from i just fell in love with slipknot from the old stuff and it will always be my favorite but its all good stuff

I recently discovered a danish band called Mercenary. Not too sure what kind of metal, i'm terrible at labeling types of metal, but its like power/melodic death/progressive or some janx.

A several of my favorites are Darkest Hour, The Showdown (new album, the last one wasn't metal, and the first was good metal but not great) Demon Hunter, As I Lay Dying, August Burns Red, A Day To Remember, The Dillinger Escape Plan(not entirely, i like their newest album the most), All That Remains, As Blood Runs Black, Living Sacrifice, Disciple (Scars Remain). I have a whole bunch of bands that i have one or two songs from like Suicide Silence, The Human Abstract, Lamb of God, Forever in terror, and Beneath the Sky.

I tend not to care what kind of metal it is, as i cannot tell the difference between most types. If it sounds good, I'll listen to it.

Thought i'd make a thread for metalheads to come and discuss things. Sorry if there's already one of these floating around, the search came up with nothing (mind you, the search function on these forums isn't great).

Anyway, what sort of metal are people listening to right now? I mainly listen to melodic death and the occasional bit of tech death. I've also been listening to a bit more black metal thanks to Abigail Williams' new album. Anyone else heard it yet? I thought it was a big step up from their EP.

I know I'm late to the parade here, but you are the first person I've heard anywhere other than myself who knows who Abigail Williams is. And they are bad-ass. Thank you sir, for you give me hope for the Escapist's musical tastes.

Anyways. As of late, my metal has been leaning towards the deathcore spectrum (as usual) and my current/recent favorite songs include:

well metalcore was something of a leaping board for me into the metal world so it holds some fond memory's. That being said a metalcore band has to have a fairly unique sound for me to really care any more. Unfortunately unique is not a common factor of metalcore.

Me too lulz. It played its part in getting me into what I listen to now, and for that I am very thankful.

What the hell is that?! It's like Slipknot with god awful vocals and inexplicable rapping sections. That was completely terrible.

A lot more atmosphere and emotion compared to my usual of Death Metal and Grindcore

I've tried getting into BM, but most of it I can't. There is some stuff I REALLY like, and then there's other stuff I HATE.

It's Solomon's law in full force "90% of everything is crap".

I really like Drudkh, Wolves in the Throne Room, Coldworld, and some stuff by Lifelover and Burzum.

For me, its the intensity. I like Death Metal and Black Metal to some extent on its own. Behemoth being a good example of a death/black metal band I really like. But at some point I want something that will energize me more. Deathcore and metalcore have that. Breakdowns from hardcore, the varied vocalization, and the energetic playing style fix that. Death Metal is good at painting a picture of death and destruction, and instills that feeling. But Deathcore actually make me feel like I could go around destroying stuff.

But then again, for most people it probably just falls down into individual taste.

See, for me, death/black metal has far more intensity than the core genres can have. I still occasionally listen to Parkway Drive (they have so much potential, if they'd just ditch the breakdowns). Honestly, breakdowns bore the hell out of me. It's like an instant pass to heaviness. 'We couldn't work out what to put here so we just did palm muted opens while the vocalist sings the exact same thing over and over.'

They're called Under Threat, formed in 1997. I'm not a big fan of their first few albums, but their latest one, Deathmosphere (2006) is really good. As well as having an awesome name, it's got some really great riffs and decent drums. Nothing flashy or particularly innovative, just good melodeath.

I use to listen to nothing but metal. But I changed to softer stuff, like alternative rock and techno(I know quite the transition) but it's not because of anything fanatical. It's just that my brother kind of pissed me off by stating somethings about metal, and I started listening to other stuff.
