I think that Therion, Opeth, and Dark Tranquility are the best bands out today. No one can undermine these three.
Definitely agree with Dark Tranquillity and Opeth. DT have yet to put out a bad album. Never got round to listening to Therion, what are they like?

I'm a huge Folk Metal fan, especiallly from Finland and Sweden. Just saw Turisas in concert with Powerglove and Dragon Force a couple of months ago. Awesome show.

I've been looking into more folk metal recently. Only band i like so far is Equillibrium. I'd like them more if their lyrics were in English instead of German. Any reccomendations?

Ah, if you are into any folk metal, check out the following to get started:

Fintroll
Turisas
Korpiklaani
Eluveitie
Tyr
Sirenia

Also, not quite folk metal, but awesome for fans of folk metal:

Alestorm
Sabaton
Wintersun
3 Inches of Blood
Amon Amarth
Hammerfall
Lordi - DEFINITELY CHECK THIS GROUP OUT!

For even more choices, the website www.metalfromfinland.com is an excellent source.

Hope that helps out. Feel free to PM me if you want to discuss these bands in detail or have any questions.

I like Therion and Opeth, but I'm on the fence about Dark Tranquillity. Some of their stuff blows me away, but other tunes just sound like generic "heavy for the sake of being heavy" stuff.

One of the best albums I've ever heard is My Dying Bride's "The Angel and The Dark River." I hate just about everything else from them, however.

Right. I've decided that folk metal is possibly the worst invention in the history of anything ever. Take it away please.

Sorry you feel that way. Folk metal is an awesome branch of the metal genre. I love all metal, but Quest/Folk metal is just too epic. I'll take your helping of it.

I tend to stray away from folk metal not because I don't enjoy it but the lyrics just kill it for me same goes for black metal and most power metal

Then again, I also love Epica... which is about as big and theatrical as it gets.
heck ya saw them open for kamelot best show ever
Good god, you lucky so-and-so. I've been to see Kamelot three times in as many years, and they never had someone as awesome as Epica open for them here in Florida. D: The coolest opener band they had was this year, a little local opener with an ADORABLE female singer whose name I continuously cannot remember... (If I find the sticker I got from them, I'll post it here).

I'm a fair newbie on the metal scene, but I definately mostly go for power metal. My favorite band is Kamelot, but I also like:

Sonata Arctica
Nightwish
Rhapsody of Fire
DragonForce

Uh....'s all I can think of right now. I know there's more, but hell, I just woke up. =/ Like I said, though, kind of a metal newbie. Before realizing the glory of power metal exists, I was mostly into bubblegum pop. (Shaddup, I'mma girl.)

My favourite power metal band has to be Blind Guardian. Definitely look up a few albums.

"Imaginations From the Other Side" and "Nightfall in Middle Earth" are my favourites. Strong Tolkien influence with their lyrics.

I would recommend you to check out Nocturnal Rites. they're my favourite power metal band. Look up Never Again, Still Alive and Fools Never Die on YouTube. Vocals are perfect, nothing less.

HAH! Blind Guardian, I knew I'd forgotten one...I actually rather like them too. My guy burned me a copy of "A Night at the Opera" and I've been addicted ever since. (This is why non-morning-people should not post early in the morning)

@Dangerous Dave: I also listen to Ayreon, though I'm not sure I classify them as "metal". They're kind of...um....well, they're Ayreon. Haha. I'll definately give the other bands a listen, though. :)

Never even heard of Deathstars. I have, however, heard that Arch Enemy are possibly doing something new. That, along with Mor Principium Est writing new material and a possiblity that The Absence will make it into a studio this year has me very excited for 2009.

What else do people know that's going on this year for metal? Anything you're looking forward to?
