Frostbitten black metal from the deepest pits of Norway for me. Or, well, to be exact, I'm mostly into Slavonic (ie. eastern European) pagan black metal. Sounds interesting? Hromovlad and Slavland are fine examples of the genre.

Also, I think that any metalhead should know Summoning, a brilliant Austrian band doing very epic ambient (or symphonic, don't really know what term to use) black metal about the Lord of the Rings and Tolkiens other works. It may sound boring, but songs like Farewell or Lugburz can give me a raging musical stiffy anytime.

This being said, Iron Maiden is still the best metal band around.

I have four favourites

1 - Ayreon (lots of diversity musically and vocally)
2 - Skyclad (Love the folky music and the lyrics are witty and hilarious)
3 - Nevermore (its love or hate)
4 - Blind Guardian (good music, awesome vocalist and a lot nerdy all around)

Then there are others: Symphony X, Pantera, Stolen babies, ensiferum... and we could go on forever
Stolen babies kick so much but it hurts saw them open for lacuna coil and in my opinion they out did coil by a long shot. Admittedly coils bassist spent the entire concert at the bar and went on completely wasted but oh well.
I hate bands going on drunk. This is essentially their job, why is it ok for them to go to work drunk? If they can't perform to their full potential, they shouldn't even bother.
Some bands play just as well when drunk. Pantera for instance. It wouldnt surprise me if they never played a gig sober and they didnt put on a concert, they put on a show. I would have loved to been able to see them live, not just because i fucking love them but because it would of been just plain awesome.

Can we try to have discussion rather than spamming?

Does anyone here listen to Mors Principium Est? Really good Finnish melo-death.

I'm aware of that, i'm not stupid. What i meant was that simply saying Tool doesn't contribute to discussions in any way.

hmm a metal thread it would have to be quite thin if you were going to make anything out of it but if you could a metal suit would be great.

Love Machine Head. I really wasn't expecting The Blackening to be as good as it was. I was pretty skeptical of all the hype, turns out it actually is awesome.

Is it just me or is melodic death metal the most popular sub-genre right now? I like the genre myself, but I don't love it, mainly because it lacks heaviness (At the Gates is somewhat an exception). Also, the name of the genre is misleading, since the only thing melodic death metal shares with death metal is the vocals. Structurally, the genres are very different.

The only truly great melodic metal band is the one who started the whole melodic thing in the first place, Iron Maiden. Melodic death metal is like doom metal, they're both fun genres to listen to, but they're so derivative of a single band that they can never be truly great.

My favorite death metal album is Human by Death. Absolutely crushing riffs, with lots of time changes. It has melody as well, but it's not the overdone Iron Maiden kind. Other favorite albums include Master of Puppets/Ride the Lightning by you-know-who, Peace Sells But Who's Buying by Megadeth, Reign in Blood by Slayer, Follow the Reaper by Children of Bodom (that's right, a melodic death metal album, again, I do like the sub-genre even though it's not ground-breaking), De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas by Mayhem, Powerslave by Iron Maiden (this is how melodic metal is done, kids), Stained Class by Judas Priest, and Paranoid by Black Sabbath.

Two newer metal bands I highly recommend are Mastodon and Nile. Mastodon in particular is one of the most original sounding metal bands in years.

Melodic death metal is definitely popular at the moment, which unfortunately leads to it being saturated with mediocre crap. I disagree with it lacking heaviness though, i'll once again point people in the direction of The Absence. They play what melodic death metal should be. Take death metal's 'wall-o-sound' and throw some paint on it.

I do agree that the name is misleading though, but what else could you really call it? I definitely disagree that melo-death can't be great though. I think stuff like early In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, Kalmah, The Absence and numerous other bands create some truly stunning music. The problem with the genre is that most bands just copy the text book Gothenburg sound and don't even try to put their own spin on it. You have to dig through the crap to find the good stuff. The genre may not be ground breaking, but it's a fairly accessible form of metal that still retains complexity and power, making it a great way to bring new people into metal.

Also, welcome to the Escapist, and thanks for a damn good first post.

You embrace top tens. Tool is, likewise, a list of my top metal bands.

For the purposes of discussion (not argument I beg you), I don't really like metal as a whole. I've had phases with System, Mastodon, Slipknot, All That Remains etc. but I don't really stick with anything like Tool. Their music suits all moods and is highly fulfilling for me in a pretentious way, it amazes me that they are not liked by more.

How do you metalheads feel about them?
You make a fair point. It's just your list seemed slightly more abrupt. To be honest, i've never actually listened to them. Any reccomendations of where to start? I'm always open to trying new bands.

Nice to hear. They're not crushingly heavy or brutal but give them a try :)

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=R2F_hGwD26g - This was the video that introduced me to them. The Pot from their most recent album 10,000 days (2006).

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=EDlC7oG_2W4 - Lateralus. Famous track off their same-titled album (2001).

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Tja6_h4lT6A - My favourite song from the album Aenima (1996).

They have two other earlier albums too. I'd be interested in any opinions on them.
That was better than i was expecting. Not quite up my street, but i'll probably look into them a bit more. Thanks for the recommendation.

Well, i'm involved in discussions on it and i'm making reccomendations. Seems fair enough that i post in a thread i made since i'm obviously interested in the subject matter.

Anyway, back on topic. Has anyone here heard of Anterior? They're a fairly new band from Wales. They've only got one album out at the moment, but it's prettyu good for a debut album. There's a bit of hardcore influence in there and the vocals could definitely use some work (but the it's a debut so i'll give them some slack). The guitar is brilliant though. I mean really good. Here's their myspace:
