Some bands play just as well when drunk. Pantera for instance. It wouldnt surprise me if they never played a gig sober and they didnt put on a concert, they put on a show. I would have loved to been able to see them live, not just because i fucking love them but because it would of been just plain awesome.Rusty Bucket said:I hate bands going on drunk. This is essentially their job, why is it ok for them to go to work drunk? If they can't perform to their full potential, they shouldn't even bother.dangerousdave_42 said:Stolen babies kick so much but it hurts saw them open for lacuna coil and in my opinion they out did coil by a long shot. Admittedly coils bassist spent the entire concert at the bar and went on completely wasted but oh well.Viteus said:I have four favourites
1 - Ayreon (lots of diversity musically and vocally)
2 - Skyclad (Love the folky music and the lyrics are witty and hilarious)
3 - Nevermore (its love or hate)
4 - Blind Guardian (good music, awesome vocalist and a lot nerdy all around)
Then there are others: Symphony X, Pantera, Stolen babies, ensiferum... and we could go on forever

Err...I think he was referring to the band.Rusty Bucket said:Can we try to have discussion rather than spamming?Merivale said:Tool.
Does anyone here listen to Mors Principium Est? Really good Finnish melo-death.

I'm aware of that, i'm not stupid. What i meant was that simply saying Tool doesn't contribute to discussions in any way.thebobmaster said:Err...I think he was referring to the band.Rusty Bucket said:Can we try to have discussion rather than spamming?Merivale said:Tool.

Love Machine Head. I really wasn't expecting The Blackening to be as good as it was. I was pretty skeptical of all the hype, turns out it actually is awesome.Wasder said:My top ten. Not in any order but here they are
Metallica
Megadeth
Pantera
System of a Down
Black Sabbath
Black Label Society
Machine Head
Rammstein
Iron Maiden
Lamb of God
Melodic death metal is definitely popular at the moment, which unfortunately leads to it being saturated with mediocre crap. I disagree with it lacking heaviness though, i'll once again point people in the direction of The Absence. They play what melodic death metal should be. Take death metal's 'wall-o-sound' and throw some paint on it.topraman517 said:Is it just me or is melodic death metal the most popular sub-genre right now? I like the genre myself, but I don't love it, mainly because it lacks heaviness (At the Gates is somewhat an exception). Also, the name of the genre is misleading, since the only thing melodic death metal shares with death metal is the vocals. Structurally, the genres are very different.
The only truly great melodic metal band is the one who started the whole melodic thing in the first place, Iron Maiden. Melodic death metal is like doom metal, they're both fun genres to listen to, but they're so derivative of a single band that they can never be truly great.
My favorite death metal album is Human by Death. Absolutely crushing riffs, with lots of time changes. It has melody as well, but it's not the overdone Iron Maiden kind. Other favorite albums include Master of Puppets/Ride the Lightning by you-know-who, Peace Sells But Who's Buying by Megadeth, Reign in Blood by Slayer, Follow the Reaper by Children of Bodom (that's right, a melodic death metal album, again, I do like the sub-genre even though it's not ground-breaking), De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas by Mayhem, Powerslave by Iron Maiden (this is how melodic metal is done, kids), Stained Class by Judas Priest, and Paranoid by Black Sabbath.
Two newer metal bands I highly recommend are Mastodon and Nile. Mastodon in particular is one of the most original sounding metal bands in years.
You make a fair point. It's just your list seemed slightly more abrupt. To be honest, i've never actually listened to them. Any reccomendations of where to start? I'm always open to trying new bands.Merivale said:You embrace top tens. For the purposes of discussion (not argument I beg you), I don't really like metal as a whole. I've had phases with System, Mastodon, Slipknot, All That Remains etc. but I don't really stick with anything like Tool. Their music suits all moods and is highly fulfilling for me in a pretentious way, it amazes me that they are not liked by more.
How do you metalheads feel about them?
That was better than i was expecting. Not quite up my street, but i'll probably look into them a bit more. Thanks for the recommendation.Merivale said:Nice to hear. They're not crushingly heavy or brutal but give them a try
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=R2F_hGwD26g - This was the video that introduced me to them. The Pot from their most recent album 10,000 days (2006).
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=EDlC7oG_2W4 - Lateralus. Famous track off their same-titled album (2001).
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Tja6_h4lT6A - My favourite song from the album Aenima (1996).
They have two other earlier albums too. I'd be interested in any opinions on them.
Well, i'm involved in discussions on it and i'm making reccomendations. Seems fair enough that i post in a thread i made since i'm obviously interested in the subject matter.Optimus Prime said:Rustybucket sure does like to keep posting on his own thread...
