If Nintendo can learn from its mistakes and improve on the 1 shortfall that the last 3 generations of Nintendo consoles lacked then they could dominate the casual and hardcore. I'm talking about the processing and graphics power of there machines. The Wii hit a home run with there fun of the casual controls and more physical game play but the limited hardware of the Wii prevents 3rd party developers from making games for the system because they have to cut a lot out of a Wii version to get it to work.
Nintendo are amazing when it comes to making games that everyone can play and there's no reason they can't keep doing that but by going cheap on hardware they are distancing themselves from Sony and Microsoft (and thus the hardcore) and for game makers trying to make serious non casual games, Nintendo isn't going to get a lot of ports.

So wait...is this article suggestion that the next Wii isn't the only console Nintendo is releasing? I think I may be misinterpreting the wording if Nintendo releases a console for gamers not interested in motion control along-side the next Wii that alone would make me go "Zuh!?"

Oh, I do recall my jaw dropping when I first saw the Wii-Mote.
I also remember banging my head against the desk, at how absurd the notion was and how few/no serious developers would want to support the system.

And I was right.

The Wii generates its amazing revenue by undercutting its competition at the waist ($200 vs $300+?), and filling its library to the brim with cheap-to-produce Shovelware.
So while the Wii is a commercial success; it is nothing more than that in my eyes.
Because as a gaming platform, it seems only a handful of developers (mostly Nintendo) actually make use of the hardware in new and interesting ways.

I've found two or three games that actually makes genuinely good use of the motion controls rather than just taking a pre-existing Gamecube title and remapping the buttons to different waggle controls. For most (by far, the vast majority) titles, the sensor bar is the sole genuine improvement over a traditional controller.

Truly, while this comes off as a rant against Nintendo, I really do want them to make a product I could find myself interested in. But somehow, I doubt they can kick the "casual-only" habit.
I'm not saying that "casual games" are evil. Just over-emphasized. Nintendo brought a large number of customers into the market, and I'm certain many of them just might be getting tired of Raving Rabbids by now.

So Nintendo, do make my jaw drop. But this time, please make it drop for the right reasons. Your 3DS shows serious promise as a gaming platform, so I know you haven't lost the touch quite yet.

It would be pretty funny if Nintendo suddenly launched a "hardcore" console with amazing graphics that easily beat even the PS3's, and at the same time they kept selling and supporting the Wii for families and cheap motion control gaming, so really have 2 different consoles out at once with two totally different focuses, and 2 different sources of income.

I highly doubt that's what will actually happen though, just wishful thinking. :p

Considering Nintendo's shift towards the upstream, I am honestly not suprised by Sakamoto-san's words. Infact, I will be more suprised if Nintendo's next console doesn't blow us away (by that I mean in a positive way).

If the Wii can be described as the NES of this generation, Nintendo's next console can probably be described as the SNES of the next generation....meaning it is probably better in every way imaginable.

I am not much of a console person, but I am still really looking forward to seeing what kind of piece of hardware Nintendo has managed to devise.

EDIT:

You have no idea how very likely it is for your prediction to come true. Let me put it this way...."still supporting the Wii" is the only wrong part.

maybe the controller will have to be inserted into the mouth to activate motion controls, hence-jaw-dropping

i won't be considering buying a nintendo console anyway. if i am going to buy a new console, i'll wait for ps4 or xbox extreme or something

Aren't allowed post one after another anymore... the flashing lights of your avatars in combination make my eyes hurt, please have mercy!

OT: Knowing Nintendo it'll be awesome. Looking forward to it, I just don't know how it will turn out. Here's hoping that we'll all be enthralled by it.

I mean, they'd have to stop solely churning out Mario, Zelda and Metroid games and actually innovate.
Did the definition of innovation change while I wasn't looking?

In the long run, these are the guys who started most of the standard features on gamepad controllers, brought the industry back after the crash, expanded the handheld gaming industy...a lot, created/popularized/revolutionized--Whichever word you feel like using-- seven genres/sub-genres--again, whatever you feel like calling them--over the years, made the first open world game, developed Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time which completely revolutionized 3D level design and camera techniques (lock-on for fighting).

In this generation, they have developed their latest handheld around a new control scheme, and their latest console around another--and if the PS Move is any indication, it's looking like Nintendo's next innovation to the gamepad controller is catching on as well. They have made two games that will hopefully revolutionize 3D level design yet again (Mario Galaxy games), and they are one of the forerunners of retro-style game development. They've recently announced a handheld with glasses-free 3D! They're doing this all while keeping pretty much every IP alive and expanding gaming to a much wider audience.

With any other company I'd be skeptical as hell. But these are the guys who gave us the DS, the Wii, and the 3DS. If anyone can pull it off, it's them.

But what could they do????
:D I'm pretty excited to see. Personally, I hope a Wii 2 annoucnement will be tucked in with the 3DS release date announcement. :D
