To clarify my feelings, I'm not saying Kinect wont eventually have something for the 'hardcore crowd' (by the way I just think were all gamers and honestly I find anyone in the industry, Sony and Microsoft included, dividing up there consumers into 'hardcore' and 'casual' to be really childish) or that those people who said those things were wrong but come the fuck on this is horrible business.

This is like when Sony said "Well the PS3 will be $600 cause we want the consumers to earn it" That doesn't make me want to buy the product your selling that makes me want to shove my foot up your ass!

The fact that Microsoft thinks I'll buy Kinect so I can get achievments is not only laughable but frankly insulting to my intelligence as a consumer. I didn't buy the Wii cause I COULD put Homebrew on it and I didn't buy the PS3 cause it had trophies (since I had it before Trophies were installed but the analogy stands) I'm not enticed by tiny details. My Penis isn't magically getting bigger every 1000 points.

By the way people pay for Live because it's a good service. I don't pay for live because I'm a cheap bastard on a budget.

EDIT: I think Tycho said it best, Microsoft is just not good at playing the Game of Games. How much processing power does Wii Motion Plus take up? Playstation Move? Dance Dance Revolutions dance pad?

Yeah Nintendo and Sony have pissed us off before, and then spent the last three years kissing at our feet going "Sorry Sorry it was a bad phase for us"

new e3 2010 trend is "to attract nongamer (not even casual gamers) people".
the reason of that stupid argument said by the weird microsoft person, is this.

he is just trolling. don't care.
lol.

"I have one thing to say to the hardcore gamer who says Kinect has nothing for them," said Toulouse while discussing concerns about Kinect on Major Nelson's latest podcast. "Those games will have achievements, so don't tell me you're not going to play at least some of them, you hardcore gamers out there. I know you will."

But Toulouse later suggested that the hardcore audience, who largely expect Kinect to underperform and under deliver when it launches in November, had been "wrong a lot" about market trends and successes "for the past ten years",

"Let's go back and look at the track record of the hardcore gamer," he continued.

"Shipping a console with an Ethernet port? Oh, it'll never succeed. Paying for multiplayer? Oh no, that's not good. I don't like avatars; I won't buy anything that goes to my avatar. The Wii... I mean no offence hardcore gamers, you've kinda been wrong a lot for the past ten years.
Oh hey so lets count up the way that insults us

1.That Hardcore gamers will buy a projected $150 add-on that has no games that currently appeal to them (scept maybe Fable 3 depending on your enjoyment of said series)because it has Achievments? as the wise profit Mike Mizian once said "Really?"
2.That OPINIONS like "I don't like Avatars" have been proven wrong because people do like them.

2 so far but I'm sure someone can disect it more
You betcha we can.

3. Speaking as someone who grew up in a family that survives on a paycheck from a service industry, THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT. ALWAYS RIGHT MEANS NEVER WRONG. Way to go, Microsoft. You just broke the most basic rule of business.

If I buy it, it wont be for the games, it will be so I can be a lazy ass on my couch and not have to use the remote to flip through shit on netflix etc.
This. I'm more interested in the non game applications of this technology. Maybe we will finally get that house of the future they promised us in the 50s.

As for the article, aside from the pull-out-of-his-ass ethernet port comment, I still don't like those things he mentioned. The PC still provides me with a much better multiplayer experience then Xbox Live (Steam is also far superior service). Avatars are pointless, definitely something I would never spend money on, and are overpriced. Why buy a $5 lightsaber when I could buy actual content with that dough?

WOW ACHIEVEMENTS!? Now I'm totally convinced! No sweetie, It's not about playing some of the games. Its about buying that 150$ eyetoy first to play them. Gamers are only achievent whores for games worth playing.

No one doubted an ethernet port (cause they didn't care).

Paying for multiplayer still does scare a lot of people away. Honestly that's the best argument I get for PS3. Almost half the guys I meet are on PS3 online only cause of it.

NO ONE PAYS FOR AVATAR BS! "I won't buy anything that goes to my avatar." still holds true.

I always liked the Wii for what it is. I knew it would do well the first time I saw it.

He actually has a point. Hardcore gamers have had a pretty damn track record in terms of predicting the success of trends.

I mean, how many times did you hear people saying that the Wii's outdated hardware was going to make it a complete failure.

Just because I bought a console form you Microsoft (one that has numerous problems btw), doesn't mean you can tell me what I want. The past, present and future of video games depend on the use of old fashion controllers, not some crappy gimmick.

Simple is perfect, let's leave it at that.

i don't plan to get the kinect so if the game requires it i won't get it so that may mean that fable 3 is off the list then again i know next to nothing about it other then its release date and some story elements

If MLG had tournaments for Kinectimals, I'm sure a lot of hardcore gamers would play it. However, that's never going to happen.
In fact, if you really think about it, most of this motion sensing stuff isn't really designed to make one guy win and another guy lose. They're all for family games, designed so that people who have never played it before can still do a good job and get some gold stars. Hardcore gaming, however, usually includes hardcore gamers hardcore raping the noobs. The noobs won't like it, but no one likes noobs anyway. Grow up, kids.
As for achievements and avatar items, both are something few people try too hard for. Why get games for the achievements when you probably already have a few games with collection achievements you've been putting off? And why buy cool things for your avatar if you get the face for free? That's the only part that really matters, after that you can put on an xbox shirt and some jeans and call it a job well done.
I understand that hardcore gamers can often be wrong. They're just like fanboys who don't like the direction their beloved fiction is going when someone writes a book for it. If it's good, they'll be fine with it, but if it's bad, they'll forget that it ever existed.

Still though, on a slightly subjective note, that bit where they say that the only reason the "hardcore" will play these games is because of achievements is just depressing.
Doesn't exactly project confidence in the quality of the products, does it?
I think it was more like: "hey "hardcore gamers"! Remember when you boycotted Modern Warfare 2? Yeah...don't pretend you'll actually boycott this either"

It's funny to see the crap we throw around concerning 'casual' gaming and shovelware and that we get insulted when a professional calls bullshit on our attitude.
I still don't own MWII, though to be fair I didn't necissarily Boycott it so much as just didn't want it.

Who would honestly want to be a "hardcore gamer" anyway?

Pointlessly restricting what kind of games you play over a title? Thats just fucking stupid.

I'd like to know what Microsoft defines as a hardcore gamer? Someone who just plays games to get achievements? Christ.

I own a 360, but I've always been a PC gamer. And the Only game that I've really had a considerable amount of fun with on the 360 is Saints Row 2. (The PC port is so terrible, it makes me cry manly tears.)

Pretty much every other game that I care to play is released on the PC, (Or sees a PC release sometime later). The only game on the 360 that's not on the PC right now that I want to play is Read Dead Redemption, But I'm pretty sure it's coming to the PC eventually. I personally prefer to be referred to as a PC gamer, rather than a Hardcore gamer.

This I don't get. Why can't the two exist side by side? I've got a Wii, which I've enjoyed far more than my 360. Not all of it's games are flailing arm fun! Little King's Story is a damn good game. And even if you ARE flailing your arms around and look like an idiot, who cares if you are having FUN?

That's what gaming is about! Having Fun.

lol, who said consoles with an ethernet port was a bad idea?

obviously we all wanted 56k modems installed instead. Genius.

I still don't really understand why people pay for xbox live though. I assume it's people that don't understand how little it actually does, or that other services that do similar or the exact same thing have been free and still made profits just off ad revenue(looking at you battle.net).

As for buying crap for an avatar, I don't even know what that is relating to.

Yep, because the best way to get someone to buy a product is insult them directly.

I'm sure it will sell millions more because we're "wrong". After all, no-one know what I like better than the manufacturer of a games console I have zero interest in.
[small]yes, subtle insults are in advertising all the time, but not "lol, you're wrong.". Usually.[/small]

I thought that started with the PlayStation 2? No, wait, it was the PlayStation 1. Nope, sorry, it was the NES.

On a more serious point: what kind of deluded fool buys games just to increase their achievement count? Seriously.
