Iron is too abundant, NPC villages are empty, new large scale biomes add nothing to the game. In reality, nothing has really changed, it's the same old build, kill, build dynamic as before and there's nothing wrong with that. Endermen and the abandoned mines are pretty cool, but I can't shake the feeling that they're just caves that happen to have wood and torches in them.

I'm not enjoying it at all... Mostly because the server I play on is having memory leak problems and has been down most of the day.

But for now, what are your thoughts? Do like it or do you not? What do you thing would improve it?
-Improved Biomes:
Biomes are much larger and much more distinct from what I've seen. Desserts aren't just a 16x16 grid of sand with a few cacti thrown in, which was one of my biggest complaints about the biomes. However, they do have a tendency to screw you over when you're trying to find some coal or a mountain to dig through. Also, I found myself spawning on an island in the middle of the ocean. There was no trees or land in sight. Still, biomes have improved.
Agreed.

-Lighting:
I absolutely adore the new lighting. The warm glow of torches make the indoors of my home a comforting place while also making it dim and dark when I place them in caves. In caves, before the update, they just seemed like the were lit with office lights.
Agreed.

-NPC Villages:
This one I actually found kind of creepy. Once I stumbled into a village I was introduced to... well, nothing. There were no NPCs in this NPC village! Plus, when I got into one of the houses they were empty. There was barely any furniture about. I was hoping this would be a chance to make some furniture in my house so that it doesn't feel like a giant storage facility of chests.
I am torn on these. They are under construction currently but it is nice to see them here. This is going to make for some cool mads once the game is complete. Overall thumbs up, but I am waiting to see what Notch does with them. But getting them working should be enough. If Notch brings NPC dialogue to the game that would be really special.

-Mobs:
I am alright with the mobs. I have a spot near my house that spawns enderman often. WHile I was fearing they would move too much crap around, it seems they usually move 1 block. Silverfish, I have yet to see. I am pretty indifferent. I like that animals run from you. Get a bow or sprint. The game NEEDS more challenge the way I see it.

-Hunger:
This was a nice addition. I was worried it would be tedious and just be a pointless addition. I was thinking it would be more like the air bubbles when you are under water. That is, go to zero and you start losing health. Instead, it is better than that. By offering a regeneration rate through hunger, food no longer works like potions. If you are badly injured AND hungry, you are going to have to find a source of food (easy to do) eat it, then hang out a bit. This removed hot-swapping of food and weaponry. This is something I personally love as it makes combat a bit more challenging as you have no way to heal in combat. If survival mode has a need it is challenge as surviving is pretty easy. I totally give two thumbs up for having healing take some time.

-Experience
Cool idea. Like NPC villages, need to see where that is going. I like that death will de-level you. I just hope it doesn't end up like the achievement system and ends up serving a purpose.

It won't update for me! It keeps saying "Login Failed" whenever I try to start it up.

I want me some 1.8 so bad, I am bursting at the seams. Does anyone else have this problem? (or possibly a solution?)
I also have this problem, no idea why though...
Go back to minecraft.net and download the new client. (Redownload the game) It has a new launcher.

I found a abandoned mine. I basically used the skill SHAT SELF and it was super effective.
Also, remember, COBWEBS SPAWN SPIDERS NOW!

I can't play it. All of my wooden objects (including signs and paintings, making them unviewable), hands, mobs, and minecarts flicker in between normal and black. Then it crashes.

The downloadable client has been unusable since 1.5, no matter how many times I download it.

I can't play at all. I'm using Mac OS 10.5.

It would be nice if they did some testing on Macs every now and then...

They're all nice additions but they hardly breathe new life into the game.

What we need are some end goals, especially in single player.
Noooooo, that is the last thing minecraft needs. The moment you beat a game is the moment it starts getting boring.

OT: Its going good for me. 1.8 laggs a little but I love how the fog makes the game feel on tiny render distance anyway.

Seriously, 1.8 dropped my frame rate from 300 to 120. That is inexcusable.

Honestly, the only thing I like about 1.8 is the lighting and the food. Everything else is rather meh, nothing that special about it. 1.9 I might be more interested in, but I'm still kind of doubting that.

It was only temporary for me but my max was about 40 fps at the best of times.

Well, it's great. I haven't been able to play for more than 5 minutes at a time without it 'running out of memory'.

Hopefully that's fixed soon. :\
Try downloading the newest version of Java and make sure its 64 bit if you use that..
That removed all memory problems for me and a friend..

OT: I enjoy it quite a bit, have been playing all night since it got my server back up.. Im just a little annoyed that i havent found any villages yet, though i have seen them in singleplayer..

I love it. And it's quite nice how my whole server needed to start over again, in some ways. I've already commandeered a little cliff to build a fort in.

Although I haven't yet been able to find a decent texture pack to work with 1.8.1. Anyone know of any? Preferably HD?

Still, it's awesome. The endermen are so-so. Sometimes they freak me out but most of the time I'm not bothered.

I LOVE the next biomes/landscape enhancements...like how a desert feels like a desert. Hell I was following a massive river across the map for ages yesterday.

The food meter is alright. It's only annoying if you're on low health - but that's part of the game.

I'm loving it to be honest. Being more into the creative side than the survival side, I love 'creative mode' where you can just build what you want and then play the map later.

As JWRosser said, the landscape elements are more realistic, whilst still maintaining that wonderful pixellated charm.

Very good :)

I love it, with the exception of the hunger meter. I have a serious amount of hate for the hunger meter. Enough hate that if I hadn't already bought the game, I probably wouldn't just because of that stupid thing. Realism rarely, if ever, = fun.
On a side note, I really love the new lighting. Sprint is awesome too, esp. when trying to run from creepers and such.

I dont see why people hat the hunger meter that much.

hell, after I made a stone sword I had killed enough cows that I had two stacks of beef and enough leather to make armor for a small militia.

If anything it's only annoyance to me is how slow it goes down.

I mean, I was able to make my own little quarry, find a nearby village, make enough tools to last a while, and make a watchtower... with only using two "meats".

OT: my only bad experience was the first village I found was engulfed in flames because the smithy's building hadn't been built properly, thus the lava leaked out and set the forest on fire.
for single player, it goes down too slowly possibly. but i play it with me girlfriend, and then suddenly the animals are less frequent so you do also need alternative sources then just cows & pigs. also cows seem more rare in multiplayer. dont know why. but if you whakc some grass and make a small field you can easilly acomodate with grain > bread, store some milk find an egg, hope to find some melons make some cookies etc. i actualy like the hunger system. give me a reason to make fields, build a granery etc. XD possibly a small mill.

I really like the touch they added that deep underground at the bedrock level, the area fades into darkness much quicker, and the air is filled with smoky dust particles. It really feels like you're at the bottom of the world.
realy, this has been understated. this, is awsome. but as far as im concerned, it can start a little higher, say from block 30 or so, not just realy at the bottom.
then again people with underground towns seem to hate it. lol since they cant get the place lit up XD maybe add a sort of natural or thate removes if a for X blocks around. would be awsome. could make it luminescent green or something and also give off light, slightly less then glowstone. make it ffing rarer then diamonds though XD. ohhwell one can always hope.

I actually really like the hunger meter, but I think I might play the game differently than most.

I don't build massive structures, I build practical things. My friend built a tower of glass and lava. I built a steppe garden.

Generally, what I do when I play is just explore the map. The only function my houses serve is as repositories for my materials and waystations in my travels. One of my pre-1.8 maps was mostly coastline, so I had about 5 different waystations that were only accessible by boat (and swimming I guess..). If I go into a cave, it's not to look for x diamond or w/e, it's just to see what kind of formation I can find.

So for me Hunger is a neat addition. It also make combat more interesting since I can't just eat a porkchop to regain my health instantly. I'm just really glad they made food stackable.

Firstly, I love the new biome generator. Its nice to see some more interesting landscapes, proper rivers, ravines etc. I know it sounds silly but it does wonders for immersion, at least for curious people like me. That said I haven't seen any NPC villages at all, closest I got was some kind of abandoned mine system.

Multiplayer is a bit of a problem, though, as I was so laggy I couldn't play. Not that it matters, the Singleplayer now lets you go into Creative mode. Its probably swings and roundabouts with most people, but for me I have no interest in mobs, hunger (I particularly hate hunger) and scraping the entire map for 6 blocks of clay or pumpkins that someone hasn't found yet.
