Minecraft hasn't introduced anything new to the market? Really? I wasn't aware there was a game like it.
Between the dozens of lego sims developed as some guy's coding project and the dozens of roguelikes developed by small teams around the internet, there is nothing in Minecraft that wasn't done at least 10 years ago.

I guess it did introduce something new to the market though, I didn't have to pay a dime to play any of those other games.
You're absolutely right, and Doom and Wolfenstein 3D are the same game.
Ah, good, glad we can agree then. Don't know what you mean about Doom and Wolfenstein though, didn't think we were talking about the genesis of the FPS.

No, it's not better, and it's not new either. From what I've seen, Minecraft is just Garry's Mod 2.0 with a very pixel-based graphics system.

Mr. Croshaw had already pointed this out in his review, but Garry's mod gives you everything to mess around with while Minecraft makes you work for it. But they just seem too similar sometimes. And people are making movies and animations in it already.

I'm not agreeing at all, I'm just clustering you with the people who've say "Doom clone" but you can think what you want.

That's fine. Then this year Mojang didn't release jack shit. All they've done is given people a paid beta. Not to mention, it's a beta that came out in 2009.

It's not about the best developer this year. It's about who has the biggest following this year.
So?
did you even re-read what you posted. The insinuation here is that if they didn't actually release anything this year, they shouldn't even be in the competition.

The rest of your post really had much of nothing to do with what I was bringing up. I was just calling bullshit on your earlier comment.

Nah I don't often reread what I post because frankly I give my fucks somewhere more productive.
Like in minecraft, right?

The fact is that Mojang is very popular this year because it's game has done incredibly well in this last period, I said it was the most popular game this year. What's so hard to understand about that? A game can be released a year before and get really big the next year, I mean it's to be expected with the massive abortion of a year we've had.
Because it wasn't released this year. It's a beta.

Yeah why even deal with new or indy developers, the only ones given a chance to win should be in buisness at least 15 years and be milking their old franchises for the 20th time. Thats a good idea.

No it isn't. It just has a lot of casual gamers wetting themselves with joy because they think that since actual gamers like it it makes them a real gamer.

Nah, I hardly ever play Minecraft any more, but I voted for them because it was honestly the game I've enjoyed most this year and what the fuck is wrong with that hmm? It was either that or I vote for someone I didn't believe in just to make the community happy and, check this, I don't care what the Escapist community thinks about anything.
Then why'd you bother voting at all?

I honestly thought Minecraft winning was an April fools joke when I got on earlier since the last I checked, Valve was winning by a good amount. Jokes on me I suppose, I didn't even have Mojang getting out of the starting gate.

Minecraft is just popular this year. Odds are Mojang won't get so far next year (unless scrolls releases and is amazing).

Maybe, maybe not.

But it seems to have the biggest fanbase that rival games like CoD and WoW. Seems like the game only survives because of its fans hyping and praising it.

Wow, I sort of hate these forums now. You guys clearly have no interest in gaming.

In fact, I'm just going to say it. The only reason Minecraft is popular enough to beat out the amazing experiences that all the other devs have put out this year is because it's popular with the sort of hipster that doesn't care about games, but goes on gaming forums anyway. The game does nothing new or surprising, and includes no features that haven't been seen in games before. It's a fun sandbox, but that should not be enough to win it so much adulation and praise over everything else out there.
Maybe some people just have a different opinion?

I don't know, I don't even play Minecraft, but I won't say that the only people who like it are "hipsters that doesn't care about games".
Yeah I think he's right, you know I used to like my 143 games on steam BEFORE games were cool and all. Now I can't play Minecraft either, because it's too cool and mainstream.
Seriously, people need to learn that everyone has different taste and opinions. A lot of people who play Minecraft have tried (and still play) MANY more games and genres than just Minecraft. And they're still at a majority who's more "right" than all the people whining about a popularity contest on the internet.

People love when games do something different, and add something completely new to the medium. Now, which games from these developers are, at heart, power fantasies, and which games are something different?

There's your reason.

It's called sarcasm, you were even using it. Along with a ridiculous strawman argument btw. I don't think anyone was arguing that Doom or Wolfenstein were "innovative or original" in relation to each other. Also they were made by the same company, by some of the same people. That would only have been a logical comparison if Mojang had produced all of the roguelikes and lego projects I had mentioned 10 years before he had released Minecraft, and it probably still wouldn't be totally comparable.

Apparently that's what most people here seem to think if the voting is any indication.

Minecraft is better than Mario, Pokemon, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Half Life, Portal, Left 4 Dead, Fallout 3/NV, Resident Evil, Team Fortress, Elder Scrolls, Borderlands, The witcher, and oh god I could just go on and on.

Sure you could almost apply this to any dev that's winning or won March Mayhem, but the point here is that they had games. Not some game that is in beta and not even officially released. At least in the end Zynga didn't win last time, here though, it looks like Mojang going to. Can anyone really sit here and tell me it deserves to win more than ANY other developer?
How long does a company get to trot out the same victory over and over, though?

It'd be like a sports team saying, "We won the 1830 Super Bowl!" when they haven't won a Super Bowl in recent memory.
