Supporting a really promissing indipendent dev like mohjang is a way better use this contest than to get another mail onto Blizzards/Nintendos-Spam heap. Do you think they care about that? They don't. The folks at mohjang might care, because they are only a handfull.

Minecraft hasn't introduced anything new to the market? Really? I wasn't aware there was a game like it.

Between the dozens of lego sims developed as some guy's coding project and the dozens of roguelikes developed by small teams around the internet, there is nothing in Minecraft that wasn't done at least 10 years ago.

I guess it did introduce something new to the market though, I didn't have to pay a dime to play any of those other games.

It's called sarcasm, you were even using it. Along with a ridiculous strawman argument btw. I don't think anyone was arguing that Doom or Wolfenstein were "innovative or original" in relation to each other. Also they were made by the same company, by some of the same people. That would only have been a logical comparison if Mojang had produced all of the roguelikes and lego projects I had mentioned 10 years before he had released Minecraft, and it probably still wouldn't be totally comparable.

Ya realize sarcasm doesn't easily translate into text. Sure it is comparable because everyone else compared it or you could say Blake Stone and Wolfenstein 3D. Have you even played Minecraft? Not the free mode on the website, I mean the bonified game. I'm aware he said his game was inspired and came from other games like that but the game is still in beta. It's constantly changing.

I'm more confused why you care so much. I really don't care who won MM, as I said I voted Bioware...or Valve...whatever one of those guys. But I don't give to craps who won a vote-a-thon because it doesn't effect anything. But to get so bent out of shape to say that a guy who made millions by himself making a video game that's not even finished yet and not claim this isn't worthy of some kind of award because he's not a giant developer with 4 games out per year is just ignorant.

In fact, I'm just going to say it. The only reason Minecraft is popular enough to beat out the amazing experiences that all the other devs have put out this year is because it's popular with the sort of hipster that doesn't care about games, but goes on gaming forums anyway. The game does nothing new or surprising, and includes no features that haven't been seen in games before. It's a fun sandbox, but that should not be enough to win it so much adulation and praise over everything else out there.

Maybe some people just have a different opinion?

I don't know, I don't even play Minecraft, but I won't say that the only people who like it are "hipsters that doesn't care about games".

Yeah I think he's right, you know I used to like my 143 games on steam BEFORE games were cool and all. Now I can't play Minecraft either, because it's too cool and mainstream.
Seriously, people need to learn that everyone has different taste and opinions. A lot of people who play Minecraft have tried (and still play) MANY more games and genres than just Minecraft. And they're still at a majority who's more "right" than all the people whining about a popularity contest on the internet.

This isn't about "tastes and opinions". This is about the internet gaming community declaring a product that's no more innovative than computer science student's coding project as being superior to every game released by the other developers in this contest. And none of this, "what they released this year" bullcrap. You're telling me that all these people have a stronger emotional investment in Mojang than in the experiences Valve, Bioware, and Nintendo have given them? Accessible sandbox play is more compelling than any story ever told in gaming?

This is about a crisis of faith. This is about me believing that we were a community of enthusiasts who shared a common love for the gaming hobby because of the things it can let us experience. What about the games that helped get you through the rough or turbulent times? What about the vistas that took your breath away? What about the characters that you didn't want to let go during the credits roll? What about the friendly camaraderie of playing a fun game on the couch with a friend? What about the catharsis? The sorrow? The poignancy? The adventure?

I thought that we cared about games because they let us experience another life and another time, taking us as far and grand as we could imagine. But now I'm afraid. I'm afraid that It's just been me all along.

Welcome to March Mayhem. Honestly... who cares though? It's a popularity contest that is dominated by whoever can mobilize the most of their fans to come out to vote. Mojang seems to have done that the best. Even better than Zynga last year. However, I will be amused if, like Zynga this year, Mojang gets stomped into the ground in the first round next year by people pissed off over this MM.

I agree that it's a fun game. But the best game EVER? I disagree. I also feel that mojang SHOULDN'T win March Madness. Mostly because I object to a "company" that only ever made one game, ever winning.

People are just taken by storm by it and can't believe how much time and fun they are getting out of a game for such a measly price when usually it's the other way around.

I think if people took time and thought about it - As in, comparing Notch & Co to another developer - in terms of what the two parties have brought to the table since they opened. Sure, Minecraft might be your most fun thing right now, but is that enough to cancel YEARS of Halo Deathmatches, Bioware RPGs, etc.,? All your favourite franchises and characters? I dunno.

Anywho, March Mayhem is just proving who's most popular now. What's hot and what's not. It's not a best developer of all time thing. I think.

My choices in developer are not opinion, they're fact.

Valve is inherently better than Mojang, just as Bioware is inherently better than Mojang.

Mojang isn't even a real developer, they just make betas like Zynga(Farmville) does.

Mojang is also only run by 10 people, so it is obviously worse than companies run by 100 or more people.

Everyone knows that if a game doesn't have guns, it isn't even worth looking at.

When I found that Mojang has beaten Valve in this tournament I found it jaw dropping, that they made it this far, and by no means am I a minecraft fan boy, or any of that, now when I read through about 3 pages of this thread, I started face palming, more specificly from this quote:

from what I've seen, half of the Mojang voters voted for Mojang because:
A. they've never played a Valve game

B. they want the underdog to win

learn from this independent devs of the world, you can release a half finished beta and STILL be praised by an army of fanboys who hold you in higher reguard than the people who made fucking PORTAL. bravo Escapist, for imparting this wonderful lesson on the games industry. if your company is small, quality does not matter, you are better than EVERYTHING.

I am a valve fan indeed, but does that mean Valve is the gods of the gaming industry? No, and yes I am a pc gamer, and you know what, just because companies aren't getting the praise that the people want them to, does that mean you have to bash the company that should be thought of as saying "look at the creators of minecraft, they have had over 1 million copies sold, and they are still only in beta." That should be an inspiration marking for small game companies who are starting at making indie games, do you know how valve got started?
Gabe worked with Microsoft after it got big, Gabe decided to go into the gaming market, and he had a good enough amount of money to start off their own gaming career, meaning there budget can be larger than most new game devlopers, I personally never learned how to play Dwarf Fortress, but indeed I do know it is a good game, Minecraft allows you to be creative in a survival element, and the reason I enjoy playing it is specifically the multiplayer survival aspect of it, if you have bought the game, and I am curious to know if half the people in this thread ever bought minecraft, and actually played it, because the game is more addicting that in it seems, and before i knew it, i joined my friend in a multiplayer server, that still focuses on the mining aspect of it, and allows you to be creative with other creative people in the server, and matter of fact you don't need to have a rocket science degree, or an art degree to play this game, not to mention in it's own since the game can be extremely beautiful.
Indeed I do love minecraft, because it's nice to get off all these other games such as Call of Duty, and Team Fortress 2, it gives you a breath of fresh air of something that isn't being such a big hit because you can add a few features and the gaming community will buy over 1 million copies per year, because the game is being realeased each year, with a new story campaign, and a few new guns *cough* call of duty *cough* Or a game with a large community who bitches and moans about how the team keeps adding hats to the game, and new weapons to allow the player to have more fun *cough* Team Fortress 2 *cough*
Also In my personal opinion Minecraft is the best sandbox game around that revolves around building, garrysmod being 2nd, little big planet being a distant last
