My friends have been trying to get me to play MMORPG's with them, and my response is always the same. "If you can find me an MMORPG that doesn't have a battle system that amounts to standing around, doing nothing but nursing cooldowns until you've killed 20 of whatever some generic farmer said they need the liver from, then I'll join it."

Two years later, and they STILL haven't come up with anything, but they continue to bug me about it anyway.

So, I ask you, does such an MMO exist? (I'm also looking for a good twitch shooter that has non-shitty shotguns, but that is neither here nor there.)

EVE online, maybe...? You could work for a player run corporation and just mine all day long, if that's your bag. Other than that, i'm afraid killing 20 of whatever is just the nature of MMOs i'm afraid. The business model is based around repetition, otherwise you'd never stay for longer than a month.

Blah. The reason I can't play those games is due to the repetition. It gets old much, much too fast. If it were a completely new idea, then maybe it would be acceptable, but it's over-saturated the MMORPG...I'm not sure if I could call it a 'market' since most are free, but eh. As for EVE Online, I've seen it before and I honestly didn't think it was interesting in the slightest. Not to mention that the really epic ships can take six REAL months to build, then some jerkoff could raid your dock and blow that ship up for shits and giggles...and you can't get it back.

Pirates of the burning sea, avatar combat is a little weak, but ship based combat is nothing like the combat you are looking to avoid. Also, the game has one of the better player based economies.
I...shall look into it. That's mostly to appease my friends, though. My personal interest is twitch shooters. (Basically, the exact opposite of Halo. I only know of AVA Online, Soldier Front, and Genesis AD, though.)

MAG, if you have a PS3. It is an MMO with 3 factions, and requires squad tactics, but-and here's the catch-it's an FPS. No grinding professions, no kinning insignificant mobs for their internal organs.

Though it won't solve your questing dilemma Vendetta or DCU both have very unique combat systems along with the comic relief of the latter to make it go stale at a much slower pace, also vendetta's dungeon system usually has you changing at a decent pace

I don't. However, I'm not sure if that was a shot at the PSN being down. Maybe I've just gotten too sensitive about that lately.

I prefer PC twitch shooters, anyway. The first reason being that twitch shooters don't exist on any console as far as I know, and a mouse works much, MUCH better than any controller possibly could.

Edit: Also, they're free. My paycheck doesn't even cover all of my rent at the moment, so...yeah.

Surely, the important question is:

why are all the MMOs that actually sound good subscription based? surely it would make more sense from the POV of 'sell more units' to have players buy the game, then be able to play it without paying again?

I've played Dungeon Fighter Online and seen gameplay videos of Vindictus. DFO has slightly more movement to it, but it's still just nursing cooldowns.

PSO was about as close as you'd get to hack n slash game play in an MMO as far as I can tell. PSO2's on the horizon, might enjoy that.

Vindictus boss fights consist of LOTS of dodging and careful attacks. The first big boss, the Gnoll Chieftain, pretty much demands the sort of move-recogniition consistent of an action game. Even a high-level player might lose to him if they're an idiot at just the wrong moment.

Best part is, since Vindictus is free, it's not too hard to try out just to see if it fits the bill at all.

I wish MAG was for PC, but no it's an exclusive. I agree on the mouse, but I think it IS possible to play PS3 games using USB mice and keyboards, or so I've heard. And it does play like your average COD shooter, but with a LOT more reliance on your squad efficiently coordinating with each other. Also, I love my PS3, why would I troll it?

TWITCH shooters? Hold on while I consult the interwebs...
OH, SHMUPS! I've seen them for console downloads but not main title games.

Once a game plateaus and stops growing money starts becomming a bigger issue. It becomes a lot more difficult to handle all the bug testing, customer service, etc. Also MMO servers are pretty expensive.

No Constant Cash Flow = No MMO

The alternative to subscriptions is putting out an expansion once a year or having a ton of micro transactions. Both come with their own issues.

Also sub based MMO's tend to be bigger and make more money. More Money = Better Game

good DFO point :p

play Vin, there are almost no cooldowns at all save one long as your not playing a Staff Evie (and even then your not gonna notice em most the time), ever one else, gets 1 skill, at level 40, with a 1 hour cool down, that lasts 2 minutes, but for that 2 minutes, you are a beast, that's it, one skill :p

...Aren't shumps bullet hell games like Touhou? A twitch shooter is when you die in 1-3 bullets. There aren't any energy shields or 'dying mode' BS. You get shot, you die, you respawn, you get back to the action. Counter-Strike is the best example I can give. (Well...kind of. You don't respawn in CS)

It's funny. I can't kill ANYTHING in Halo, but I'm always in the top 3 for TSes.

I suggest DDO for the MMO question. It can still get somewhat repetitive, but certainly less so than other MMOs(IMO) and I think you might enjoy it. Also, it's free to play.
I think the shooter you're looking for is essentially halo one. That was teh only game I've ever played that had a shotgun that acted anything like an actual shotgun.
