Excluding ignorance & sci-fi, this is probably because quite a lot of inventions we take for granted now have been created by 'accident', e.g. Charles Goodyear vulcanising rubber by spilling latex on a hot stove.

Lets just hope the next accidental invention isn't 9"tall, 6"wide 1' thick Human & the 300 hour day.

The media wants people to buy thier newspapers and watch their TV shows. The only way to get people away from the Simpsons and on to the news is to give people stories that they want to watch. Unfortunately the only stories people want to watch are ones about sex, celebrities gone wild and things that may possibly kill them (sometimes at the same time). So yes, they do try and spread fire, as well as many other things.

Kind of, but the best thing to remember the media is mostly a business and it will ship whatever sells.

I don't know about everyone else, while i doubt this is correct, but i keep getting a vision of a politician as a puppeteer pulling strings which connect to a globe when people talk about the media.....
