Ok so, I'm not a very hip guy. I don't usually like trendy things or teenage things, really.
So my mom and I were talking about socializing and junk, when she basically started begging me to be hip. "Do your hair up more stylish. Dress a little more current. Stop blasting your Stock Aitken Waterman in your car." I don't mind this advice much, but it's just not doable for me!
I like being out of date and unhip! I'm content listening to my terrible "Hit Machine" Pop, and My Post Punk stuff, and my 90's Rap, and my Anime OST's!
I love watching 80's 90's anime!
I couldn't imagine wearing anything but my usual Sweater/Pants combo!
Anyone else here have this same problem or just in love with being away from the current?
Any other STW listeners here?

No, I usually dressed in what is considered hip. I don't mean to, I buy shirts I like and I buy jeans I like and I feel better when I look my best.

Thats probably just me.

I don't tend to listen to other people if they try and tell me what I should/ should not like/listen to/wear etc. Although to be honest it is extremely rare for anyone to do so.

I wouldn't say I am "In love with being away from the current." as that suggests I am more into older stuff. It'd be more accurate to say that I don't care for trends in the slightest.

I think it's more of a worry that you may become some introverted basement dweller or something like that, or become obsessed with living in the 'past' ( the 90s not exactly being old ) . Not that you will or there is a problem with that.

There are social groups for everything and as you get older they very often blur or merge into bigger groups as people put differences aside due to maturity, so being 'un-hip' doesn't really mean anything.

Frankly as long as you understand what you are doing, are happy socially and personally there is no real problem.

A good pair of jeans can be useful, since it somehow makes you much more 'hip', never really understand this.

I've never had that problem, though I wouldn't say I live in the past, just in a nerd subculture.

That seems really inconsiderate of your mother, she seems to just want you to fit in instead of being yourself and what your like.

I dress how I like, listen to what I like and act how I like and it doesn't bother me what others think. In fact I prefer being thought of as the strange, abnormal person in any given group.

Peronally I dress in clothes that fit well and look like I want them to... I love being away from the current in my attitude and fazes I go through... I'm currently into classic Celtic choir-music, and I'm "supposed" to be into Rock/Pop/Techno... GOD I hate techno!

so kindda like you but my clothes apparantly seem to be not too unhip... I guess I'm "lucky" in that way..

Given the staggering number of people that were born and died in between 1990 and 1999, I would still say that it was awhile ago. That's just me.
I mainly like to live in the 90's because that's when I was a kid. I was too young and introverted to enjoy all the cool stuff that happened in the 90's, so I like to retroactively enjoy them now.
That, and I'm not even British.

To be fair you have to go out of your way to buy clothes that aren't hip anyway, so most people who aren't dressed 'hiply' are poor(no offense), elitist or weeaboo scenesters :)

That said I still want a checkered suit :p

I doubt that's what she was saying.

You can easily update your wardrobe without having to "lose yourself." It's all a matter of knowing what you like and how to put together a decent outfit.

I try to dress well and have certain sense of style however I do so on a budget, I'm sorry I'm not paying £70 for a adidas coat. This said I will never dress hipster, I'm sick of all these idiots wearing those combo t-shirt/scarf things and wearing their hoodies open with the string tied together.

I wear shorts and a t-shirt every day be it rainy, sunny, snowing, any weather. I'm like the mail service of wearing shorts. Alot of people give me crap about it but I don't care.

The councelor in High school told me to try being normal. I was horrified and offended for that.

I've always been more interested in dressing practically and studying and games and manga than socialising. I wouldn't even know how to dress and act "normally", what ever that means. I don't know, girls apparently should care about their looks more.

Well, I'm in university now, and there are plenty of similar people than me.

Just curious, how do you know what is "hip", or in "fashion" right now? Are there like certain magasines you are supposed to read?

I just wear whatever I've got in my cupboard, which consists of some jeans and shirts. Although most of the shirts in my cupboard are/can be slightly offensive to some people.

I love being away from what,s hip (mostly because that would mean I would have to listen to rap or ,00/,10 pop I,m more of a 70,s rock or 80,s pop fan and I prefer function over design.
I wear what I like (mostly shirts and jeans)

I wouldn't consider myself exactly "hip". I don't listen to pop music, I'm not crazed about sex, I never touch my hair, except when it's getting cut, and I dress with whatever I get my hands on, as long as it's comfortable.

I generally wear (Even thought it's usually comfortable in favour of being hip) and listen to stuff that I like. Most of that isn't from this decade. I can deal with that even if I get teased about it.
I don't plan on changing any time soon, being hip is overrated.
