I don't plan on changing any time soon, being hip is overrated.
But... Hating mainstream is the thing that's hip now... meaning saying that being hip is overrated, is hip!

Does that mean loving what's hip make you unhip?

The councelor in High school told me to try being normal. I was horrified and offended for that.

I've always been more interested in dressing practically and studying and games and manga than socialising. I wouldn't even know how to dress and act "normally", what ever that means. I don't know, girls apparently should care about their looks more.

Well, I'm in university now, and there are plenty of similar people than me.

Just curious, how do you know what is "hip", or in "fashion" right now? Are there like certain magasines you are supposed to read?
as far as i can see....tight pants for girls..and even tighter pants for guys....i tryed it once..and as i just said ONCE....i need to breath once and a while...its all confusing...i wore my wrestling shirts and jeans for 4 years....and a WRESTLING sweatshirt....love that team lol

...Oh Christ, my brain! Shall we say, "be yourself, no matter how unhip or hip you are"?

I mean afterall, liking some mainstream stuff never hurt. And some people are dedicated to staying hip but they're nice enough people and happy with how they're living, the same way all us un-hip bastards are.

At any rate, all the crazy rambling aside, you might try doing the mainstream thing if you can pull it off. You can always go back to being a nerd. Besides, in a purely pragmatic sense it sounds like your mom is basically offering to buy you new clothes and music, so I mean WTF right? Go shopping. :p
That's one the problems with me, is that I hate spending money on things D:
I'm very cheap, to the point where I actively buy at the cheapest possible grocery store (Compare Foods in case you're wondering).
Unrelated, but I like being cheap and rubbing it in people's faces.

I wear brown and bright autumn red cords, colourful t-shirts, brown shoes, a fancy earthy toned necklace. I dress the way I dress. I have my own style. Some people know me as the cords guy.

Swish!

You shouldn't follow trends just because that's what's popular, but you also shouldn't go against them just to seem counter-culture. That makes you a hipster (yeah, somehow doing everything to seem unhip nets you the title of "hipster". Just roll with it). Being trendy is one thing, but I think being hipster is even worse.

Just don't care about trends, and wear what you like. If you listen to certain music because you honestly like it, then great. If you listen to it to spite Justin Bieber fans and your mom, then you're no better than them. In fact, you are significantly worse. Bragging about it drops you even lower.

I don't care enough for clothes to not follow the mainstream nor actively protest it. I just buy what can be found in stores. And bandshirts, though, I like non black bandshirts, and those are fucking rare. You'd think they got painted with gems.

When it comes to music, don't listen to anyone who says that what you listen to is "garbage". But at the same time don't accept the music that you listen to as the only "good music". Allow yourself to gain a liking of other music whether it be jazz, rock, rap, or even orchestral.

As for clothes, I'd say it wouldn't hurt to dress better according to what you wear (sweater and sweat pants). There's nothing wrong with t-shirt and jeans for casual dress, but wear a polo or something different every once and a while to change things up. Hair... I dunno... use a brush.

MY semi-secret love is for 1940s music and dress. They were glorious years for clothing and music. However, I keep that to myself. Dressing as a guy from the '40s isn't exactly going to help me and it isn't the only part of me, I don't base myself entirely around a like for something. I do dress in more current clothes and listen to current music, but it still love wearing a suit and putting a bit of old music on.

No. Because what you just said is you like dressing un-hip, as if what's cool has anything to do with it. So in a way you're being just as bad as all those people who can't stand to be un-hip.
I, on the other hand, do what I want to do. I don't care about how 'hip' it is.

I wear pants and shirts.
As long as they don't make my eyes bleed and are comfortable, I'll wear them.

She wants you to be current? HAHA! Claim that you are rejecting "current" things because you are a hipster! What is more hip than that =P?

If all else fails, go with the Hitchhiker's Guide method. "I'm so cool I could keep a side of meat fresh for a month. I'm so hip I have difficulty seeing beyond my pelvis. Now let me through" or something to that effect. It's been a while.

Looking "Current" for its own sake is really stupid. There is no reason you should dress the way some fashion designers think is cool. Do your own thing, and don't give a shit about the fashion industry.

In essence, Be your own fashion.

...I've never really known what "hip" means. Too much work trying to figure out what the current thing is in any case. I wear what I wear because it appeals to me (usually by being either comfortable or nigh-indestructible), listen to what I listen to for the same reason.
But then, I've always been antisocial. Now I have a scary reputation and guns to reinforce my solitude. If that's not your thing, though, you may want to find a group of people who can accept your style.
