I probably dress the most differently than anyone I know, particularly at 6th form.
Metal band t-shirt, Metal band hoodie, probably longest hair on a guy and it's just past shoulder length.
I honestly couldn't give a fuck, I dress how I wanna dress in the clothes I feel comfortable in.

I am me. Whether I fit in or not is not my concern. My parents have always considered that a good thing, I think. They're quite proud of my sister and I not being like everyone else.

Heh... I dressed like a scene kid for Hallowe'en (the ugliest flats I've ever seen, skinny jeans I had to make because I refuse to ever buy them, a striped shirt, a plaid shirt, hideous makeup, and a huge poofy umm... what do they call that hairstyle... like a mullet, but just done with tonnes of hairspray and teasing. Plus a bajillion hideous, childish accessories like a bow and some colourful barrettes!), and my mum gave me that look like 'if you are actually serious right now, I'll disown you' and begged me not to wear my hair that way ever again. IT'S JUST A COSTUME, MUM. Shit. It's probably because my brother posted a tumblr picture of me and said, "It's happened - she's finally gone scene," and mum totally believed it.

...that had nothing to do with the original topic, I don't think, but it made me think of it.

I wear jeans and tank tops/t-shirts a lot. That's me, and has been for many years. I dislike pretty much everything that can be considered in, stylish or in season (TIGHTS ARE NOT PANTS... just putting that out there). It's also hard for me to find shoes because I hate pink and won't wear heels to save my own life. Mum doesn't seem to mind that much, at least.

I have absolutely no idea what is currently hip/fashionable/popular, and i thrive in the knowledge that i can make decisions on how to live my life without having to worry about keeping up / staying away from the norm.

I avoid lame trends, but keep my own personal style:
Baggy jeans, watch, funny/cool T shirt, Dog Tags, striped grey hoodie with the sleeves rolled up, and my hair spiked up in front. Occasionally the hoodie and dog tags are replaced with a polo shirt and loose awesome tie.

Ok so, I'm not a very hip guy. I don't usually like trendy things or teenage things, really.
So my mom and I were talking about socializing and junk, when she basically started begging me to be hip. "Do your hair up more stylish. Dress a little more current. Stop blasting your Stock Aitken Waterman in your car." I don't mind this advice much, but it's just not doable for me!
I like being out of date and unhip! I'm content listening to my terrible "Hit Machine" Pop, and My Post Punk stuff, and my 90's Rap, and my Anime OST's!
I love watching 80's 90's anime!
I couldn't imagine wearing anything but my usual Sweater/Pants combo!
Anyone else here have this same problem or just in love with being away from the current?
Any other STW listeners here?
I dress to be what I and many of my friends consider very fashionable. I believe keeping up with social trends and socialisms is prosperous to your personal and professional life. I went through a metal, Anime, and generally antisocial stage myself. While I was happy at the time, looking back I?m far better off now. I was ridiculed and once even attacked for my long hair and trench coat. I found that girls that don?t look like the floor are generally uninterested in anima, and I couldn?t get a part time job. Once I eventually caught up with the times I felt more fulfilled. I enjoy dressing fashionably, I love my new hair, I have a part-time job, Find I am more respected by my university lecturers, do very well with girls and all-in-all enjoy being hip.

That not to say that my way of life is better, but judged better by others. As I said, I was ridiculed and bullied by the way I used to look. I didn?t modernize to stop this, I did so because I think my life is better this way. I haven?t changed every aspect of myself, Still love anime and Manga, watch WWE religiously and publicly crucify people who disrespect star wars. Its just that first impressions always count and the way you look and dress are your first impressions. That is what I believe is what your mom wants, for you to have better life experiences by making yourself more "Hip". She?s is wrong to suggest it, but isn?t right In thinking it is the best thing. As I have been told 1000000000 times your parents (in most cases) are only looking out for your best interests.

Well, I hate rap, listen to classic rock or orchestra, I refuse to play football despite everyones advice to based on my physique, I have the most extensive vocabulary in my school, depending whether or not you count the Ap senior english teacher, I draw, I read large books with 5-7 syallable words... To put this in perspective, I'm the absolute opposite of almost every male in my school. Also, for a proverbial icing on the cake, I refuse to date if I were asked, don't want to marry, and don't plan on being a "player" as most crudely put it. If there was a mainstream in my area, I'm the fish that decided it'd be fun to swim against the current.

OMG dude, i think your mom found your thread :)

but really, it will help you a lot if you put forth a little effort into fashion. from what i have found a properly fitting T-shirt/Long sleeve shirt with jeans will help you out a lot.

take it from a fellow nerd and Arrested Development fan: try to look decent when you go out in public. also be sure to know how to dress for business( button down and slacks), business causal (church clothes), and semi-casual (Nice causal shirt and khakis).

I do not really follow the fads much either (I still rock a causal button down every now and again) but i do make sure i' not a disaster.

oh, hygiene is important too. just saying.

Inform your mom that, in the current society, small niche subcultures have a high status amongst their peers, so that behaviour that would be seen as going against expected norms is actually preferred, as long as it furthers such subcultures' inner driving ideals.

What is to say, It Is Hip To Be Square.

there are better things to spend money on than clothes. buy what makes you happy, part of being a functional individual is managing your lifestyle. personally haircuts and clothes are things i can consider cutting down on in spending money on my hobbies and other interests instead.

all I get is a guy telling me to cut my hair (medium length) stop wearing skinny jeans (they aren't that skinny they're loose fit) and to stop wearing all black (only reason is I have a bunch of tee shirts that just happen to be black and 2 pair of black jeans because all my blue jeans are missing) oh and listen to rap (just because I primarily listen to metal doesn't mean I don't listen to rap)

I just dress in what's most comfortable for me. T-shirt, jeans, sneakers or boots, small coat. I don't think my school even has fashion trends. If someone is stylish, that's their thing. Most of us have to get up in the morning and dress quickly. The teachers usually have more style.

Admittingly, though, I did start a small trend by wearing a hat in school every class, every day for the last 3 years (except for gym, for obvious reasons). I could also try wearing a kilt for most of the day. If anything can be considered outrageous in my school, it would be a kilt.
