Anyone else here have this same problem or just in love with being away from the current?
Ah! **hugs** Anime lately has been so blah. The stuff from the late 80s and 90s is my favorite!

Ranma 1/2, Slayers, Sailor Moon, El-Hazard, Bubblegum Crisis, Escaflowne, Neon Gensis Evangelion, Dirty Pair, Magic Knight Rayearth, Boogiepop Phantom, Key the Metal Idol, Serial Experiment Lain, Revoltionary Girl Utena and that's just what I can think of off the top of my head. There was some good stuff in the early 2000s (Noir, My-Hime, Twelve Kingdoms, Kashimashi) but it just hasn't caught me the same way.

On the other hand, I like my mildly trendy clothes. Well, sort of. I really like certain styles, and when those styles are in, I buy a lot of clothes. When I don't like the styles that are in, I wear the older styles and look mildly outdated. Then something I like comes back and I buy some more. I tend to like sleek and form-fitting, so even when I'm not in style, I still look pretty good.

... that said, I wear sweats around the house. I mean, they're just comfy! ^^

I've never given a shit about what clothes I wear. (Except if I'm going to a formal event and shit like that.) As for music: If you have a problem with what I listen to (I don't really listen to obscure stuff anyway) fuck you and don't listen.

I buy what I like and is comfortable. Luckily I'm a guy so it's very uncommon for the two to be mutually exclusive.

Don't let anyone, tell you how to be. I never got along with the everyone must look the same schtick in high school. It made me a little bit of an anomaly to pretty much everyone I grew up with, but I still had friends.

I say good on you, you should be yourself instead of what people tell you you should be.

That said I think you could approach your differences in a different way, make it something cool about you instead of what sets you apart from others.

Oh and suit up, you'd be amazed at how much more awesome it can make you feel.

You know what everyone wears where I'm from,

not just a fleece jacket, but a black "north face" fleece jacket with the scratchy bald part on top
.
they're ugly and I see men women and children all wearing the same thing, its weird. I wear jeans untill the crotch blows out T-shirts (usually blank), a beige jacket, or a black zip up hoodie.
UPDATE: I just looked it up, those North face jackets cost $100+. Holy shit!

No, I usually dressed in what is considered hip. I don't mean to, I buy shirts I like and I buy jeans I like and I feel better when I look my best.

Thats probably just me.
To be fair you have to go out of your way to buy clothes that aren't hip anyway, so most people who aren't dressed 'hiply' are poor(no offense), elitist or weeaboo scenesters :)

That said I still want a checkered suit :p
I have to disagree a bit. I wear pajama pants 95% of the time. They are comfy, durable and I don't have to go out of my way to find them. My thought is: if there's no dress code, why wouldn't I wear the most comfortable thing I own?

Ok so, I'm not a very hip guy. I don't usually like trendy things or teenage things, really.
So my mom and I were talking about socializing and junk, when she basically started begging me to be hip. "Do your hair up more stylish. Dress a little more current. Stop blasting your Stock Aitken Waterman in your car." I don't mind this advice much, but it's just not doable for me!
I like being out of date and unhip! I'm content listening to my terrible "Hit Machine" Pop, and My Post Punk stuff, and my 90's Rap, and my Anime OST's!
I love watching 80's 90's anime!
I couldn't imagine wearing anything but my usual Sweater/Pants combo!

Any other STW listeners here?
Just gotta say: I like your style! :)

OT: I've never had a problem with what people think of me. I just don't really care if people think I'm a psycho freak or anything. I love 80's and 90's music, but I still listen to music from across the times.

I'm just so handsome and charismatic that anything I wear or listen to instantly becomes hip.

I use to have these problems a lot with my Mum, but now she has come to understand the fact that I prefer wearing the clothes that pleases me. I never did care for what other people think about my look.

Also OP your not the only one who enjoys listening to anime osts, I think they're awesome. (well not all of them)

I just wear what I want. If it's 'hip' as it were, then I'll wear it if I want to. This happens fairly rarely; I don't want to wear most 'hip' stuff, it looks shit. All black and badass coat and DMs suit me just fine.

...my mom actually thanks me on occasion for dressing the way I do.
I wear plain straight leg jeans, t-shirts and I don't listen to horribly obscene music (that she knows of) But your mom should chill, I mean if you dressed in the current fashion you'd look like a douche bag...I'm just saiyan

I will say this right now. Being hip isn't cool! Nowadays the geeks are cool because soon, (as well as now pretty much), geeks run the world! I have been a geek all my life, and I have been well liked. Yes, I have friends in the "hip" crowd, but I won't change who I am just to hang out with them more. A geek is who I am, who I hang out with, and who I will continue to be as long as I live. Hip is boring.

same here. Except, for me its a t-shirt with a hoodie over it and jeans. (minus the hoodie in warm weather). Really the only look I got. Its normal (enough) so no reason to change it.

As far as I'm concerned, it's still 1979. Or maybe 1984, but that's pushing it.
Doctor Who is still popular, David Bowie is hot shit, Disney is making some of their most underrated films ever, and you can always rock white leather ankle boots and massive sweaters. Always.

My female friends always beat me up about my white ankle boots. But I love them so. :'(
My mom doesn't do that to me, because she was my age when this stuff was normal, so she loves it, too, but with anybody my age or even lots of other adults it's always 'If you have an iPod, why do you still keep records?' or 'You should wear tighter clothes. If you're trying to lose weight, you might as well show it.'

Dear modern world - I'm going to dress like Alex Drake most days. Deal with it.

Mother's will always have something to say about how you dress etc, just a part of being their "child."

That being said... if a style suits you, great. If another doesn't, or you don't enjoy it, you shouldn't change for it.

Thankfully, when my mother suggests something style wise, it's usually viable and something I would wear, going out. On a daily basis, I'm not even remotely hip/trendy/etc seeing as it's cargo/combat pants, basic t-shirts and my steel-toe combat boots. Go-go general contractors!

I've always dressed in clothes that appeal to me, and done what I want with my own time.

That being said, if someone suggests I might look better in something else, I'll pay attention and give it some real thought.

I have no desire to become one of those people who use "be yourself" as an excuse to be close-minded. Too often they look down upon people following 'mainstream' fashions, when they themselves are really no better. Both groups are just blind adhering to an arbitrary standard.

In short: be what you want to be. But also try to keep an open mind, and consider alternatives irrespective of your initial impressions. They might grow on you.
