I havent been trendy for years, cause I've been wearing Carpenter jeans (no, they're not cool) and plain solid colour dark tees.

So I'm not worried about it.

Bring it to her attention that you are concerned she worries too much about what others think of you, or possibly what others think about herself by indirect means.

ah yes, my parents' opinions were forced upon me as well, long ago. Point is, don't be hip if you don't want to. What society thinks is a bunch of bullshit anyway

Ok so, I'm not a very hip guy. I don't usually like trendy things or teenage things, really.
So my mom and I were talking about socializing and junk, when she basically started begging me to be hip. "Do your hair up more stylish. Dress a little more current. Stop blasting your Stock Aitken Waterman in your car." I don't mind this advice much, but it's just not doable for me!
I like being out of date and unhip! I'm content listening to my terrible "Hit Machine" Pop, and My Post Punk stuff, and my 90's Rap, and my Anime OST's!
I love watching 80's 90's anime!
I couldn't imagine wearing anything but my usual Sweater/Pants combo!
Anyone else here have this same problem or just in love with being away from the current?
Any other STW listeners here?
Basically everyone in this generation is hip.

If you are hip to some sort of subculture or pop culture (video games and anime included) then you are a type of hipster.

Just because you don't dress like one doesn't make you any less hip.

Even the fact that you are resisting being hip and are retro is...hip.

It is a very broad and annoying description.

OT: Tell your mom to chill. We are all hip.

I never had this problem but now my parents are starting to go that way. For some reason, they cant stand that I always wear jeans, and a sweatshirt. They also think im "wrong" for liking metal, whatever the hell that means

I don't plan on changing any time soon, being hip is overrated.
Exactly. You know what appears to be fashionable on girls? Skinny jeans combined with Uggs. Seriously, fuck fashion.

As for myself, I like to think that I dress pretty damn stylish indeed. I have a good sense of colour combinations and know what suits my body shape best and dress accordingly. It's usually comfy to boot, wearing layers; dress shirt, long sleeved shirt and tank top, is often just as warm as a simple hoody/sweater but looks a bazillion times better.

But it doesn't follow any kind of hipness or fashion, I just picked my own style. You seemed to do that too, so your mum shouldn't whine so much.

Blue jeans, and a T-shirt, usually a graphics T-shirt. Sometimes, when its cold (so basically all the time now), I wear a hoodie. On occasion, I wear a half-turtle neck, when I feel like it. Thats my thing, and Im not changing. Fucking Period.

Seconded. Because having the circulation cut off in your legs and wearing dead cats on your feet should totally be a fashion statement(!)

My mother tried to become a fashion gestapo once.

...She gave up real quick.

I'm not outlandish, but sometimes I'll tread on the thin line labeled 'obscure'.

Just a little example:

I recently bought a dangling woven necklace with large bead insets.

Each bead symbolized a piece of my manitou.

It's not that wierd, but in my school it was pretty different.

Some people asked, I politely explained, and it was dropped.

I'm 'hip', but in that way of 'he is modern trendy with a hint of personal taste'.

I have the same problem, though with my classmates, they tell me constantly to cut my hair because ''its unmanly'' and they have started calling me a pretty boy for having lengthy hair, when i do not even wear anything fashionable! (i wear cargo pants and a t-shirt most the time).

Dont let anyone tell you how you should look, they are jackasses, you are hot!

My parents have made similar requests, and I'll agree with you that they are physically impossible.

I am what I am, and I'm not going to try to hide that by wearing the big stupid fashion of the day. Screw that.

Iron Maiden T-Shirts, a hammerfall hoodie, and shorts. I wear that year round and the worst I get called is a "hipster" by a very obvious and bad troll.

in the 'past' ( the 90s not exactly being old )
Given the staggering number of people that were born and died in between 1990 and 1999, I would still say that it was awhile ago. That's just me.
I mainly like to live in the 90's because that's when I was a kid. I was too young and introverted to enjoy all the cool stuff that happened in the 90's, so I like to retroactively enjoy them now.
That, and I'm not even British.
I'd say a fair amount of people have been born and died since Tuesday, but that wasn't a while ago.

Up to you, but I can see multiple sides to all of this. At least your mom both seems aware enough of what's out there to say something, and also thinks you can change.

See, I'm normally one of those people who makes the "be yourself" arguements, and I rode the nerd train through my rather messed up life of outpatient facilities and emotional problems. I turned out well before my most recent crash and became disabled, went to college, worked 10 years as Casino Security, and while not impressive I did get to see and do a lot of neat things in retrospect.

The thing is though that society needs it's outsiders to pick on, and really it's become a lot more cruel than it used to be. What's more society has hardly adapted to making things more fair for the people on the fringes, and school administrations and the like have actually become WORSE at dealing with these kinds of problems since things like the columbine massacre rather than better.

Once someone is picked out as a target, it's not something that usually changes (movies aside), whether your a guy, a girl, or whatever the bottom line is once your 'that person' your stuck there for however long your in school pretty much. In real life the nerd girl or fat girl doesn't put her hair down, or go on a summer diet, and come back the raving beauty envy of her peers, and the geek doesn't wind up pumping iron and then kicking sand in the jocks faces.

Some schools are also rougher than others, I don't know what yours is like as well.

Being on the receiving end of such torment can not only hurt the person being targeted, but their family as well since there is nothing that can be done about it.

Of course at the same time, some people can cope with all that, and even thrive in that kind of enviroment. In some schools your even going to have substantial nerd communities, and that changes things. The five guys you play Dungeons and Dragons with on the weekends for example can make things a lot easier, especially if you hang out with them at school. Even if your all nerds, the fact that there are six of you can change a lot of things. No "the nerd herd" doesn't escape problems, but it's a lot better off than a solitary outcast.

Don't misundrstand, I'm not saying you should adapt to fit in with the mainstream of the school, but understand what you might be in for. Also understand that dressing like they do and so on DOESN'T mean giving up all your hobbies and such. Watching anime and stuff is more or less irrelevent if you don't talk about it incessantly. I mean there is a big differance between a science fiction and fantasy fan and a nerdy Weeaboo.

I had a lot of problems, but they were somewhat mitigated by reaching my height of 6' 1" fairly early, being fairly solid, and having the same emotional problems that got me institutionalized. I did wind up losing fights, but I did have the "advantage" of being "that big crazy guy". During my time in regular schools, my problems typically didn't involve being casually pushed around in hallways, or people trying to intimidate me for lunch money. I was also smart enough (or rather stupid enough) to get my payback in a way where I might very well get expelled or suspended, but I wasn't arrested. On a few rare occasions I've told a few people how they might be able to deal with bullies in schools in extreme cases, especially now at 35 I don't actually recommend ambushing other students in stairwells except in response to the most extreme conditions.

At any rate, all the crazy rambling aside, you might try doing the mainstream thing if you can pull it off. You can always go back to being a nerd. Besides, in a purely pragmatic sense it sounds like your mom is basically offering to buy you new clothes and music, so I mean WTF right? Go shopping. :p

I dress how I want, as long as I like how I look i'm happy.

The only thing I ever got crap over was because 98% of my jeans/shorts come from the men's isle. Woman's jeans cut into my hips, and the shorts tend to go all the way up my groin.

Exactly. If anything ruins the sometimes beautiful shape of the female body, it's Uggs.

Skinny jeans can look good though, but only a very small percentage of the female populace looks good in them. And they should never ever be worn in combination with Uggs. Ever. Who even thought that up?!

Someone who thought "You know what I'm going to dress like today? ...A failed Eskimo hooker."
But yeah, they're expensive, they're ugly and most of all, they don't look good with anything. Skinny jeans are fine if you have the right ass for them and/or everything else is tasteful. Otherwise, why spend the whole day looking stupid and being uncomfortable?

My fashion is... average at best and I listen to Pokemon remixes, jazz and classical music. I play my DS on the bus or read a book on the bus and then I work with expensive cameras at an expensive school.

I may be unhip but I'm incredibly happy.
