So I only just got Portal, having remembered I wanted to play it when I saw the Portal 2 trailers. Was playing it til about 1am last night (I started late) and had relaxed into the idea that nothing was going to hurt me unless I walked into a big glowing ball of light, or if I fell into acid looking floor.

Then
The android level happened and scared me spitless

It's not the now infamous "The cake is a lie" that's got to me though. I can still hear them singing at me... "Searching. Are you still there?" It's now 24 hours since I completed that level and about 12 hours since I even last played the game and I can still hear that voice

It's making sleep difficult. That and
"You euthanised your faithful companion cube more quickly than any test subject on record. Congratulations."

So although usually my answer to the question "What moment in a video game has come back to haunt you" would be something from Silent Hill 2, I thought it'd be more topical to start this thread with Portal. So...

What moment in a video game has come back to haunt you?

Logically, I'd expect this of Amnesia: The Dark Descent, but I was pretty much able to sleep okay after that.

I sometimes get this when a story has a very unexpected and even ambiguous ending (not the kind that's just leading into a sequel). It's not quite a "sad ending" so I can blow it off as BS, the characters seem somewhat satisfied, and yet the things I expected to happen didn't happen.

Not a game, but it happened for me with The Girl who Leapt Through Time. For all the love-tension in it, it was kind of weird for nobody to kiss at the end, and possibly even have an assurance that they'll never see each other again. Kinda keeps me up at night feeling like it just didn't "finish".

Aaah...

Ravenholm. Not my first time playing it, nor my second... I think it's along the lines of my third or fourth time getting there. I had been very sleep deprived for a week or so, and I was playing at 4 am as it was. I had just gotten to the place before you get the shotgun, when you have to climb the apartments, and... I couldn't do it. I have played through Half Life 2/episodes so many times, but I just couldn't get past that area without wanting to cry in fear. ... it shouldn't be surprising that I had a nightmare involving fast zombies a day or two later.

Portal also has a... 'haunting' moment, though this time it's in a good way. Sort of. Second playthrough, in chamber 10, I actually pause for a moment and realize there's music. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9nocjg2OLI] That's when it hit me, just how lonely Portal was, and how isolated a single track of music could make you feel.

Now I think I'm gonna go play it again :D

When Jorge died in Reach, ***** at me I don't care. His character was awesome despite him being a Spartan.
He felt like a real person to me, unlike Emile.

Underhell, man.

An epicass Source mod. Get it, a must have if you like random mindfuck.

Here's what happened.

Also, that mod has pretty awesome music.

I never got what was scary about underhell. I progressed through the whole shooting mission, and searched every inch of the house trying to figure out what it wanted me to do next. Then I went into the dreams and went into every door to get a bunch of vague character-background stuff...

And I honestly don't see what's so scary about the above video. It's like Dead Space's tension-building, but without the monsters.

So it's a little better than Dead Space.

That darn Flood room in Halo, "Well enough Alone" was creepy enough, something was just off, then you got to the room, and even the Master Chief was jittery. You watch the recording, and the guys get attacked in the room your in, and ooooh it just scared the living daylights out of me.

Better 'spoiler this up, there might be still people around who haven't played it yet.

OT: The part in Amnesia: The Dark Descent where you have to avoid the water.
Can't bring myself to play from here.

I thought it was common knowledge that EVERYONE died in Reach? The books kind of make that obvious even before Halo 2 was released by defining how the covenant "glass" a planet.

Dammit, I never thought I'd talk Halo trivia. I needed something to read.

Lavender Town, man. Lavender Town...
Why? The music? Am I the only one who thinks the Lavender Town tune is soothing?

But the turrets are adorable! How could anything so cute be frightening?

OT: Nothing from any game ... yeah ... no ... yeah no video game has stuck with me like that.

Moments in Doom 3 and AVP2.
Both Sci-Fi horror.
Both scary as hell.

Congratulations, you have spoiled this game for me. Just kidding, I've already been spoiled of everything. However, someone else probably won't appreciate that so please tag it.

You're haunted by Portal? Wow, I thought those parts were charming and funny.

OT: I still remember (vaguely) some of the cinematics from the first Starcraft. Damn Zerg scared the crap out of me when I was little.

the flood music was terrifying cuz it sounded like slihering and crawling and dripping sounds O_O
also mansion of madness on timesplitters:FP that was scary... i walked into a room to find a blood soaked bed with knifes sticking into the mattress, i then walked into a bathroom to find the tub filled with blood but the scariest thing was when i looked at a smashed mirror and saw a zombie behind me. plus the music was chilling. theres one point where the soundtrack has a baby giggling and i had to play rock music in my headset to complete it

Precisely because they're so cute! Something that says "Hello friend" whilst splattering your blood all over the wall behind you is creepy enough, for that same something to tell you that they don't blame you when you break them is just the weirdest thing I have come across for a while!

...Given your OT comment perhaps I am preaching to the choir but oh well :p

Left 4 dead 2; realising the corpse piles found at the ceda checkpoint in the parish sure don't look infected.

Red dead redemption undead nightmare; the first time I found a "family" camping.

Silent hill original trilogy. The whole. Damn. Thing.
