I suggest joining one of the Dunmer Great Houses or at least one of the guilds. All the Great House questlines end up with you getting your very own house/tower/fortress(depends on what house you join).

Just make sure you've got a slowfalling potion on you. Levitation works too.
You can also just use another one of the scrolls as you land, your acrobatics will be high enough that it won't hurt at all
Indeed, but then you're out two Scrolls of Icarian Flight! D:[/quote]Well once you get Mark/Recall and the two interventions, and know the public transit system (striders/boats/mages guild) they really become moot. If anything, they are most valuable to sell in the beginning for some cash. This coupled with the tax forms, and bolting with the secret tree cache nets you a pretty penny that is pretty valuable early on in the game, when you can buy real equipment in Balmora

Did you go to Caius yet? That'll be a good place to start. Then join a guild. It's not as overwhelming if you just say "Screw it, I'ma do this!" and then do something decisive. You'll find yourself on some kind of manageable path that way.
I think you mean Balmora my good sir.
Caius is the guy in Balmora that you have to give that package to in the beginning of the game.

Hlaalu is probably the best one if he wants to join a Great House early in the game.

Head to Balmora join a guild or continue with the story do some quests level up, go exploring there is plenty of interesting places to find in Morrowind. Plenty of nice rare items to hunt down to, there is a book that lists 32 of the rarest items in the game and i decided to go hunting for them. I have about 27 and it kept me occupied for a good bit.

Also here's a tip for some quick cash. Go to the Dren Plantation and when you get there go into the main house and go upstairs to where the NPC Orvas Dren is at the top of the house, start running into him facing the stairs and you will slowly start to slide him towards the stairs. Slide him far enough down the stairs and stand behind the pillar at the top of the stairs (make sure he can't see you) and then steal the Ebony Chest, Daedric Legs and Indoril Helm off the shelf (theres also some gold scattered around in bags and desks in the house you can get away with stealing). After you have those go to Caldera and find the skamp. This NPC has 5000 gold which comes back every 24 hours (so just sleep/wait 24 hours after selling each item). Sell him the chest, legs and helm you got and with all of it you should have roughly 18-20k gold about 30 minutes into the game.

Hey guys, I've just installed Morrowind, and lo and behold - I have no idea what to do? I've trundled around for an hour or so, and it all looks awesome, but I feel like my Dunmer needs some direction. So I call upon you to give me something to do, an objective, a quest or just tell me where something hilarious is!

From what I've heard, there's a ton of stuff in this game, and I'm a little intimidated, so help a brother out, yo.
Check out the handy-dandy paper map in the box and explore the island.

(I just google image searched "morrowind map")
http://www.uesp.net/morrow/files/mwmap_bump.jpeg

It is actually useful and shows you tons and tons of places you can explore.
Personally I'd recommend visiting:
Sadrith Mora (far right)
Ghostgate (near the middle)
Ald'rul (left of ghostgate)
and Vivec (bottom)

These places were the most memorable for me, interesting npcs, scenery, and lore/quests to be found :)

And like alot of others have already said, roads are safer than wilderness wandering, but if you feel you're powerful enough it's actually pretty fun to wander and find random cool stuff.

Memories remind me of an orc warrior in the hills very near to Suran, a guy called Umbra. He holds a very powerful unique 2-handed sword, and you can fight him for it if you're powerful (or cunning) enough to kill him.

Steps to success for a new Morrowind player:

1. Congratulate yourself on obtaining one of the greatest games ever created.

2. Realise how crappy your low level character is. Stick to safe zones at first and try and get a few levels and some gear before taking on too much. The game becomes incredibly easy once your character is high level but starting out be careful, most enemies in dungeons will flatten you.

3. Read. There are hundreds of books in the game and whilst doing the main quest you will come across many documents that will seriously expand your knowledge of Morrowind's history and enhance your enjoyment of the main quest and the game world in general.

4. Dont do the main quest right away. Join a faction and focus on that. There are alot of factions in the game so there should be atleast one well suited to your character.

Good luck, Morrowind takes a while to get into but once your there its absolutely amazing. If you get immersed prepare to lose serious time to this game.

Find the Talking Mudcrab. He is somewhere south of the Azura Shrine. I thinks thats the name probably not. It'd be better if you google that though. Or level up to 63. That was my highest morrowind level.
I'll do my best. Also, how big is the world? Bigger than Oblivion or not?
I think it's bigger than Oblivion but I might be wrong. Maybe it just feels bigger because there is no fast travel and you can actually get lost. I did and I wanted to find a way to civilization without a map. It took some time I'll tell you that. Damn Morrowind is awesome. Did you buy the expansions as well?
I believe morrowind's world is about 8 square miles and oblivion's is 16. Morrowind feels bigger because you cant see as far.

There are some awesome mods and tools that allow you to have distant land and almost oblivion like graphics.

True, plus the house you get in the end is the easiest to access. It's right there in Balmora, while the places you get for the other two Great Houses are in the middle of nowhere. Although, the other two places are more flashy(a fortress filled with mercenaries and a tower with sphere centurions as guards). But to join Hlaalu you would need to have high speech and barter to advance if I can remember correctly(they're basically merchants and love profit after all). While Redoran is more of a warrior oriented House, and Televanni is for magic users.

Smaller than Oblivion, but WAY better.
Okay, first off, you NEED to join House Telvanni. They have the best quests by far, you can join them in Sadrith Mora if they don't hate you too much.

I'd recommend following the main storyline, while it does get quite hard to follow at times, it's very rewarding, gives you good connections to people who can help you out, and makes the general public like you alot more.

The talking Mudcrab is actually a little east of a Dwemer ruin called Mzanhch, which is east of Vivec on one of the many islands there.

Obviously there are plenty of guilds for you to try out, be aware that if you join two, they MIGHT end up fighting each other at certain points and you'll have to ditch one in favour of the other.

You're going to need to level up LOTS before you can wander around the Ashlands or any other dangerous places (don't even bother with Bloodmoon or Tribunal until you're level 20 or so), sadly levelling takes a while, it's better just to muck around with some guild quests. If you're travelling down a road that you know is safe, run diagonally and constantly jump. You'll have no Fatigue for the most part, but it's worth it. You get incredibly fast.

Once you've gotten to a high level, then I highly recommend getting some mods or the expansion packs, for mods I'd suggest Tamriel Rebuilt, the Morrowind Code Patch (actually you might as well just start with this), Morrowind Graphics Extender, and a few others you like the look of.

Also, don't take your first save slot too seriously, you're bound to make another one based on a classtype you like. My fifth or sixth save was a Breton specialising in Unarmored, Short Blade and Restoration. I went straight for the dangerous areas, epic fun.

As far as combat goes, don't whine that you can't hit anything! You NEED to have Fatigue when you walk into combat, regardless of how good your character is. It's also a good idea to have either a bow with a decent supply of arrows, or a decent ranged spell. Bows are expensive to get ammunition for, but higher level spells are very hard to find and consume alot of Magicka. Go for one or the other depending on your character. And don't forget to try and dodge attacks...

For your first save, try and dwell in EVERYTHING. Join all the guilds, a Great House (telvanni or die), find heaps of random quests, start the main storyline, wander around, find out what works for you, get Tamriel Rebuilt and travel around there (again, or die), steal a bunch of stuff, et cetera. Then make another save and go from there.

A couple tips and easter eggs:

-There's an Iron Shardaxe hidden in a tree stump behind the lighthouse in Seyda Neen - take it if you're any good with Axe.
-The more remote a place you're in, the worse prices merchants will give you for items. Stay away from buying anything in small towns like Dagon Fel.
-Take stuff from crates! All the crates outside in places like Balmora won't alert the guards if you steal from them. Sometimes you'll get lucky and find a Quality or Exclusive potion in them. Usually they're useless, sell them to an alchemist. I even made a thousand gold just by taking junk like pots and pieces of paper.
-Sell stuff to specific merchants if you can. Armorers will give you better prices for armor than general merchants will, with the exception of that dickhead Meldor in Balmora. Stay away from him, he's a massive prick.
-In Jobasha's Rare Books in Vivec (foreign quarter), there's a pot plant with some epic loot hidden inside. It's called Charles ;)
-In the Gro'Bak Manor in Caldera (you have to walk or Mages Guild teleport to Caldera), there's a Scamp called Creeper. He's alot like the Mudcrab Merchant - he has an excessive amount of gold and will buy almost anything.

Hope this all helps, I've had alot of experience with the game :D

Doesn't matter which great house you go with, when one of your own manors is built, the game builds all of them anyway, you just have to find the others!

Bigger, or so I seem to remember.
Yup, and gets even bigger if you have the expansions :)
EDIT: Oh wait, actually it's not bigger than Oblivion.. I think.. Hmm.. Okay, don't listen to what I just said i'm confused :p

What to do.. Hmm.. I'd say go join a guild in Balmora, they're great fun mostly. Also, you might want some mods with that so here you go: http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=mods.list

Mke sure you also have installed the expansions packs. Even without the additional quests and locations the alterations it makes to your journal is worth it.
