Not a game, but Avatar.

The damn thing ripped off Dances With Wolves so much it's ridiculous.
I think it actually just ripped off the story of the Native Americans (-_-)
Considering the fact that the Na'vi were both able to organize their forces, and to win in the end in Avatar, proves that that was not a ripoff of the story of native americans vs. colonists.
Oh Avatar's just a rip on every 'man vs nature' movie ever created in the history of cinema. Maybe that's why it's so fucking predictable...

and i think Mafia 2 is a slight ripoff off GTA:
you enter an unfamiliar area, and through the help of a contact in the city rise through the ranks of a criminal group, while driving around and open-world city, attacking civilians and shooting out with the cops.
if that's true then any open-world crime-based sandbox game since 1997 has been a shameless rip-off of GTA.

These two. I tell everyone Starcraft is a massive ripoff of 40k and everyone looks at me and shakes their heads.
I think that's because everyone is sensible and doesn't actually care. I love 40k, but my god man, have you any idea how many things it's ripped off?
Sssshhh..unless the people Im arguing with can give evidence 40k ripped something off..it never happened...

Also the things it copied were pretty blatant too.

Zerg=Tyranids except tyranids are cooler
Protess=Eldar but orange and blue instead of white and blue
Humans=Humans(this one doesnt really count)
Zel'naga=Old ones (ancient race that created zerg/tyranids and one other race in that universe)

Also no...please dont respond with a counter-arguement you probably already had prepared saying things like "40k is ripping of warhammer fantasy ripping of Jrr tolkien ripping of mythology" because we all know that.
Well, it can be argued that the tyranids are clearly influenced to a heavy degree by the HR Giger Alien. It's a brilliant design, mind you, don't get me wrong. Still, it's clearly there and impossible to deny, the Tyranids are distant cousins of the alien.
actually, only Genestealers are cousins of Them Aliens, with them being intelligent, humanoid and in some cases having tounges with mouths. hell, they even tend to nest aboard space hulks and sneak around in them tight corridors, attacking from behind and using air ducts.

But that's where the similarities end ;P
I mean, a lot of what most people has mention walks the fine line to being a tribute! someone mentioned starcraft collossus and tham things from War of the Worlds: tribute!

I was shocked at the bold use of footage from "Battlestar Galactica" when I watched the 1988 film "Space Mutiny". It's obvious it's ripped from somewhere else even if you've never seen BSG as the model shots look FAR better than any other prop or set in the film.

As for games I can't remember the name off the top of my head, but wasn't there a game that straight off used screenshots ripped from games like Oblivion, and such as backgrounds.
I think that's Limbo of the Lost.

Warcraft. Just look at Warhammer and then back at Warcraft. See the difference? No? That's because it's the same thing.
They had similar origins (Warcraft was a Warhammer game early in development) but both universes have grown apart into their respective franchises since then. Really the similarities end with the fantasy genre and racial lines, which are hardly unique in this day and age.

Correct me if Im wrong, but has no-one mentioned Pokemon - Digimon?? When anyone says the word Digimon, the word plagiarism pops into my head. And vice-versa.
The pet monster thing is older then pokemon, only example I can think of is Monster Ranchers but I'm sure older ones exist, it's pretty much it's own genre.

And for everyone mentioning Warhammer and warcraft both are just copying a form of fantasy popularized by Lord of the Rings, same goes for the sci fi versions.
Basically, Shin Megami Tensei did it first.
It's not the same, but you capture demons by either talking to them, or beating them in battle, etc.
So yeah, in my opinion, Pokemon is ripping off SMT.

Fortress Craft is a rip-off of Minecraft. Also, Minecraft is a rip-off of Infiniminer. BUT WHEN XBOX DOES IT, IT'S EVIL!
Ever played Infiniminer? It sure ain't Minecraft to the caliber that Fortresscraft is.

Anyways, I don't get hot and bothered by plagiarism, I just play whatever I haven't played before.

As said before, the entire back catalog of Gamesloft. As well as most of Zynga's stuff. In fact this happens a lot lately due to marketing guys noticing how Apple Sheep and Casuals seem to bleed money. I'd wager the reason Apple really don't allow Flash on iPads and the like is so people don't go to Newgrounds.
the Zynga chairman, ( iforget his name) actually admitted what they do is trawl flash game sites for original games by individual developers, do their own hash of it, and then publish and copyright it so the poor bastard who did it originally cant make anything.

dirty bastard.

The biggest example of Plagirism would be the whole nick simmons bleach scandal.
http://bleachness.livejournal.com/446299.html

But in video games? What about the 50 odd NES and Genesis games that tried to copy Super Mario Brothers 3?

I think you're talking about Limbo of the Lost. And yes, 98% of the content is plagiarized.

minecraft and the thing it was copying were both made by mojang
its just one made a whole lot of money

ot:
i could say most mmos copy world of warcraft

TL;DW - James Cameron totally ripped of Harlan Ellisons work for "Terminator (1)". James Cameron is a two faced bastard, even if he did direct some good sci fi.

Also,

Dungeons = Dungeon Keeper, but that's sorta the whole point. If they'd made DK 3, Dungeons wouldn't exist.

Anything put out by The Asylum.....

On the left we have major releases and on the right are movies released by The Asylum soon afterwards

War of the Worlds - H. G. Wells' War of the Worlds
The Da Vinci Code - The Da Vinci Treasure
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest - Pirates of Treasure Island
Snakes on a Plane - Snakes on a Train

High School Musical 3: Senior Year - Sunday School Musical
The Day the Earth Stood Still - The Day the Earth Stopped
Terminator Salvation - The Terminators
Paranormal Activity - Paranormal Entity
Sherlock Holmes - Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes
Piranha 3D - Mega Piranha
Battle: Los Angeles - Battle of Los Angeles
Thor - Almighty Thor
Fast Five - 200 mph

Thanks to Wikipedia for speeding this up =)
Think your mixing stuff up mate, blatant acts of plagiarism not stuff that is based off other stuff.

Example: I am Legend (Remake of 'The Omega Man') both based off the original book "I Am Legend" by Richard Matheson which was the basis for both films. There for I am Omega is following in suite.

Da Vinci Code on the other hand is blantant.

War of the Worlds was based off H. G. Wells' War of the Worlds. It wasn't trying to plagarize it it was actually trying to be it. And considering it was originally a radio hoax I think they did well...the first one. Second one with Tom Cruise made no sense and the little girl wouldn't stop screaming.

Terminator Salvation being a plagiarism of the other Terminators? In what way?

Different directors? So what that's like saying some of the Harry Potter films are plagiarizing the series because they all don't have the same director.

Wow, wait, what?!

Yes, i took that completely out of context and used it to make a funny. Wasn't even funny. But shush.

As for the topic of the thread, i'm pretty sure a lot of things are rip offs of other things. Such as most of the things already mentioned. But there's loads more.

such as them. All a rip off of Frogger. But of course, sometimes, the games that are the copies get WAY more publicity and therefore sell better. Such as:

This is the original game from 1998 called Loop.

THIS is the award winning game from 2003 called Zuma Deluxe.

These are just example of course. There are many more.

To worldofstuart for the images. Just incase they copyrighted them.

Oh, there was some guy who was stealing episodes of Zero Punctuation, and putting a filter on it, then posting them on youtube as his own.

I can't remember the name though...
What do you mean, putting a filter on them?

OT: Probably the Eragon books. Star Wars, The Sword of Truth, etc were plagiarized very badly. I did read the books and took some enjoyment from them, but Christopher Paolini irks me as a person. That said, I did highly enjoy the Doctor Who reference in Brisingr.
