I read Eragon and found specific points that were practically copy+pasted from LotR and the Wheel of Time series, it was a bit ridiculous but it was decent overall, surprisingly.

I find a lot of ripoffs these days.

I love Star Wars, a lot, but I also love fantasy book as well so a few years ago I picked up a certain fantasy book that people had been saying was super duper good and was the best thing ever (this was back in middle school I think). This book as Eragon. So I read it, and I somewhat enjoyed it although I couldn't shake the feeling that I had already read this story before, that's when I realized that I had, it was Star Wars... with dragons.

It had everything, princess is attacked by bad guy, send away something for old wise master to retrieve, fresh faced farmboy finds it, finds old wise master, gets his family killed as a result, runs away to train with old master, finds rougeish man who helps them...

I could go on and on but I'd rather know your thoughts on the matter of not just how crappy the Inheritance books are but also what other things have you seen or read that was an obvious rip off of another, better book/movie/anything else you can think of.
I totally agree with this, and I can honestly say I saw this connection after reading the second book Eldest (it totally reminded me of Empire Strikes Back). The good news is that by the third book, this Star Wars similarity is pretty much gone.

I think the reason for this similarity is the fact that the author of the book was only about 14 when he started writing the book. So his creativity spark really wasn't anything to brilliant, it kinda reminds me of the Extra Credits where they talk about story structure and they use Star Wars as their prime example. At the end of the day Star Wars has a pretty simple plot, but what makes it such a good movie is how all the great sci-fi elements fit and work togethor. Plus its just a really good telling of that story.

Not read the books, but managed to watch the entire Eragon movie.

It's fascinating, though, it means the story must be so unimportant. Star Wars is a classical, Eragon is appalling rubbish, but they are exactly the same...scene for scene often.
You managed to watch the whole movie 0_0 I'm impressed, not even Robert Carlyle could save that piece of crap, it was even worse than the book.
I watched the movie, too. It was probably the worst movie I've ever seen. A good laugh though. Especially with that girly sparkle outfit Eragon wears at the end. I mean, I know a hero doesn't really give a shit about looking stylish, but I didn't think they wanted to lol the enemies into death.

Oh yeah, let's see.

Gotta go with the new Medal of Honor game. Blatant rip off of Modern Warfare 2. I was hoping they'd try to at least rip off a 'good' game, but oh well.

Ever look at W40K Space Marines beside... well... space marines?
What was actually 1st? Cause Starcraft was released in 1998 dunno about 40k though.
1987.

And to point out the tyranid/zerg comparison with pictures...

Alien- Movie made in 1979
We've all seen these guys, though most would remember them from the Alien vs Predator movies, and not the awesome Alien movies they were first seen in.

This is about the hundredth time this has been brought up in here (An exaggeration).

Xenomorphs are only similar due to appearance. Tyranids/Zergs are similar in appearance (After 2001, as I was corrected earlier), AND in basic background structure.

I think the real problem is that we've somehow got it in our heads that if something is even remotely similar to something else, it's a rip off. This method of thinking is WRONG!!
I don't know how this got started, but if it was Yahtzee I'm going to fly down to Australia right now and beat him senseless with a 2x4!
...Yahtzee? ...really?

Other than that I agree with you, just because a film or whatever has a lot of similar elements doesn't necessarily mean it's a "rip off". There is a point where "inspired/influenced by" becomes "ripped off" and I suppose where that point is is different for different people but I do think fans of the thing that came first are going to skew heavily towards "rip off" rather than "inspire".
I was merely referring to how people around here seem to hang on Yahtzee's every word like he's the fucking Pope or something and latch onto what he says like sheep. Although I suppose beating him with a 2x4 wouldn't do any good, I should beat everyone else with a 2x4 instead. ¬__¬

Sure it was released in 1989 but if you can find me an earlier example of Mechs in Science Fiction than 1959 (military mech) I'll be damned. Yes I am aware of WotW

I guess rip-off isn't the right word.

Two things: The Inheritance Trilogy was written by a 15 year old boy.
Secondly, read Joseph Campbell's The Hero with a Thousand Faces (1949) before you accuse Eragon of ripping off Star Wars. :)

It's like accusing McDonalds of ripping off Burger King by selling burgers.

1987.
And that's way after Warhammer Fantasy Battle(83) vs. Warcraft(94).

Yeah, Blizzard's main money spinners are blatant rip-offs of Games Workshop, which were themselves ripped from Dungeons and Dragons, which were taken from Jack Vance, Tolkein and others.

I realize that the books were written by a 15 year old, but that isn't really an excuse. Its very unoriginal and, in my opinion, poorly written, I don't think it should have gone to print in the first place so it doesn't matter how old he was.
I did in fact know about the commonalities between Star Wars and Campbell's book but my point still remains that Eragon is almost the exact same thing as Star Wars, just with dragons they have colored swords for fucks sake.
