I'd be inclined to say Garrett, considering he hides from every threat.

(Granted, he takes on situations scarier than any character from another game, but still...)

your teammates from "The Thing". i cant really explain how many time i was screaming at my teammate with the flamethrower to kill the monster. But instead they freak out and poop their pants and get eaten.

Me. When I play a scary game like Silent Hill 2 or Bioshock(I thought it was scary), I would shit my pants but the character would be like whatever.
Ok silent hill 2 was a bad example, james does get scared, but still

Uhhhh

Cowardly? Because I could name you probably 10 games off the top of my head with "reluctant hero" but cowardly, not many.

Courage the cowardly dog at Haunted House mobile phone video game.

Yeah, I win .
ROFL
Yeah, I think all loose in comparison to Courage.
Didn't know they had a video game. lol

Oh but there is one other cowardly 'hero' in a video game I can think of. FFIV... uh I forget his name, but he was a Prince and he traveled around as a Bard. But he was always wanting to run and hide instead of fight. The little girl Rydia was ten times more courageous then him. lol

I was gonna say Teddie from Persona 4, but he doesn't stay a scaredy-bear for the entire game, so I guess he's out.

I'd say Otacon is a good candidate. Actions speak louder than words, people.

well I havn't played any of them but aperantly the silent hill protagonists are not super hero's just regular jackoffs which would get scared if confronted by a man with a geometric shape for a head
Is this sarcastic? Really? Man with just a geometric shape for a head? He has a huge knife, he's a demon, he just growls (which is unsettling) and he rapes other demons.

I'm willing to bet you'd just run away when you two crossed paths.
but his heads a triangle!

a motherfucking triangle!

he's just heavily misunderstood.
Forgot the "c" there, buddy.

Anyways, I really don't think you can take a guy with a triangle for a head seriously. It'd be quite weird, maybe scary, but more likely not.
If I encountered a guy who had a pie for a head, but also wielded a minigun and raped out of boredom...you best believe I'd take him fucking seriously.
but if you encountered a guy with a pie for a head, wouldn't you try your hardest to eat said pie?
Is it worth rape and disembowelment? Probably, but when I see said pie falling out of the crater in my stomach, and Half Pie Head dropping his pants, It's not going to end on a high note.

Emile! Tales of Symphonia 2: Dawn of a New World

The guy's name should have been Weaktoast Flimsyass McMilkpants!

They quashed the stereotype with someone so annoying, so increadibly weak and unlikeable that it backfired.

Its Emile, watch a normal cutscene of him... Just watch it, I'll wait.

...

...

...

...

...

Wasnt He pathetic? Oh my gosh, he was so pathetic, right? The only time he isn't pathetic is when he is possessed or whatever and he becomes a badass, but he loses that guy and becomes McMilkpants again.

Sure, in the end, he did manage to save Mario, but he wet his pants every five seconds as he did it.
This is where Luigi turn to cool brain dude to scared little kitten. You made me re-experience some sad memories...

As mentioned by others in this thread: Luigi!!!
but there's also Daniel Fortesque from the PSP remake of MediEvil. In the remake, the character is build up around the describsion: COWARD!!!

Kratos, from God of War. NO BAD ALEX! I'd actually have to go with Louis, from L4D. Seriously, you rescue him from the hunter and he screams for 20 extra seconds.

I think there was once a Discworld game based on The Color of Magic, so my vote would probably be with Rincewind.
I was going to go along with everyone else and say Luigi, but this comment wins my loyalty.

Well, considering this forum's frequent dislike for JRPGs, I'm not surprised he hasn't been mentionned yet, bu Emil from Tales of Symphonia 2 is by far the best example I could think of (I've only played the first 2-3 chapters, so I don't know if he gets better...
No. Jesus Fucking Christ, he gets WORSE.

He, along with the abyssal dialogue and bullshit romance absolutely destroyed that game for me. I couldn't even finish it, although I did get to the final boss.

I can't stand to watch the stupid fifteen minute cutscene before the boss >.>
