I had this reaction to Dragon Age: Origins and Mass Effect. I don't know whether it's the writing or the voice acting that does it, but I am completely emotionally invested in the cast of characters in both these games, more so than in any other game that I can remember playing in the past few years.

There's really no other way I can put this other than you can just feel the craftsmanship that went into those games. I can feel the time and the thought that's been put into these games, and it really comes through.

i will definitely agree with mass effect, but in dragon age it didnt really feel like i got to talk to them that much and get to know them and their past as well as i could with the characters in mass effect

I'm not quite sure what you mean, but I probably cared the most about the cast of Mass Effect. Or maybe Mass Effect 2.

Huh. Interesting. I kind of felt the opposite. Then again, that might be because I went out of my way to go through the romance with all four romanceable characters. That aspect felt way more fleshed out than it did in ME:1.

I love ME:2, but it did disappoint me when I wound up getting to a point with all the characters where I ran out of dialogue with them very quickly. Playing as a femshep, I think I barely got to talk to Miranda at all. Same with Garrus, who only seemed to have about two non-romantic conversation scripts, and I didn't seem to get a whole lot from Jacob, either. Then again, I didn't romance anyone in ME:2. I was loyal and didn't want to cheat. =3

like both games that you have gotten emotionally involved in and games that you actually felt that the creators cared for their creations

Mass Effect... games and novels. -coughs- I got a bit teary-eyed towards the end of Ascension, okay?

The games themselves made me outright cry at a couple points, and I applaud Bioware for being able to write such impressive characters and storylines, it's a joy to play through, and I cannot wait for the third game to bring it to a close.

After that... I'd say Final Fantasy XII. Not all characters seemed to be that great, but Basch (even if I still find him annoying), Balthier, Cid, and Ashe stood out the most. Fran had some moments, but... not quite enough. I don't quite know how to put it, but they just felt... substantial.

Planescape: Torment.

Terranigma.

Iji.

Not sure which ranks first out of those. Still, I'm surprised that they've yet to make it here. Well, except for Terranigma, I guess no one knows about that.

The Final Fantasy games were the games that got me into the gaming world so I would say that Final Fantasy IX is closest to my heart.

I remember having my hair cut shorter when I was a kid when Garnet cut hers with the dagger... >_>

Black Ops, when you try and assassinate Castro and that girl pulls the gun. Well written, and well performed, Treyarch went all out on that game.

There is one game that stands above all others in this respect I believe: The Longest Journey.

Play it, you'll understand. This is one of those few games where you can tell that despite its flaws, everyone involved really put their hearts into creating it. If you're a fan of story and characters, you absolutely *must* play The Longest Journey. It's one hell of an experience!

I've played better games, and I've played games with better story, but none quite as 'heartfelt' as The Longest Journey.

far from a heartfelt game, this remains one of maybe TWO games where I actually CARED about the characters.

The Darkness.
Oh yeah, I remember that scene.

Fucking hell, that was like a kick in the teeth...

I'll say it again, Mother 3. For instance, I was mowing the lawn a week back, and the final boss song came up on my music playing device. While mowing, I thought of the story, what it symbolised, the characters and most importantly, the ending... brought tears to my eyes, and I wasn't even playing it!

An invisible post? Will it show up when I post this, making a double post? It did indeed, but there is a post in between my two now...
