KotOR, not only did I play the shit out of that game but I also cared about the characters and what happened to them. Then to top it all off it was star wars so FUCK YEAH!

Dragon Age. The characters are quite believable, for the most part. Well done Bioware.

Honorable mentions:

Bioshock. Rapture = best game setting ever.

Morrowind. Just a-strollin through the swamps is so atmospheric.

Bioshock. Yeah, I'm bringing some originality to this thread.
It was one of the few games that nearly made me pee myself with fear. I should probably stop admitting that...

I know it's been said a lot, but Bioshock. Whether you liked the game or not, it really can't be denied that it's one of the most effectively atmospheric games in recent memory.

Fatal Frame is like that as well. Mostly because you're too paranoid about being scared to death for every second of playing to actually think about anything else. *shudders*

Most Final Fantasy games have entranced me like that, but I wouldn't necessarily call them "immersive."

Pong.

Nah, Oblivion will do it. I've lose track of time every time I play it.

I would say bioshock as well, but my computer's too slow to run it. When it freezes and frame stutters... Immersion is vaporized so I stopped playing. I'll play it on my friend's PS3 next break.

I'm going to have to give this one to Oblivion. I played that game for so long. Anti-gravity forks :D
Honorable mention to Fallout 3

Mass Effect drew me in, to this day Bioware is the only one player games I'll buy
thats how they do it.... personally their games need more combat.... don't change it just add a bit more.
I can agree with that, I like a good story, but the walk and talk for half an hour sections are what usually make me save and come back later.
Mass effect is a good example 20% walking, 30% talking, 10% elivators 5% all guns, full squad, unlimited ammo, the force in all(sadly enemies die quick), solid action...... O and 45% DRIVING THE MAKO.

Dragon age was the best for the story (never played baulders gate but hey sue me) maybe because that was the only character who was not "set" {revan, shep, random chinese people who look like MK ripoffs, you know that MK deception story mode}. There was nothing to the character, he/she was just a random person and the dialoge options were deeper and were more complex. You actualy got to play the characters background....(even though that was the best part of the game.)

FFVII is my favorite game of all time, so I know what you mean. It's just that to me, "immersive" means that the game makes me feel like I'm actually there. Final Fantasy never really does that for me, but it does get me so interested and entranced that I can play it for hours and hours without even noticing.

By the way, never play Final Fantasy after having anesthetic surgery. I played through VII's big plot twist right after my wisdom teeth were removed: you can imagine how confusing it was when I started playing later, everything in the story had changed, and I had no recollection of said events. Fail.

Definitely Fallout 3. And I tend to get sucked right in to those point and click adventure games.

in this order:

1. bioshock, because it has, in my opinion, the game world that is the most logical yet mysterious i have played a character in so far. it´s really impressive how every location in rapture has it´s own sad story. venturing through the city under the sea and trying to figure out what went wrong there lead to almost philosophical discussions(i mean the typical bioshock/ayn rand-blah blah) amongst me and my friends who played it as well.

2. half life, because it hooked me on fps´s. before i was not too comfortable with fps games and they seemed mostly pointless shooting. half life was the first game that broke my immersion wall, meaning that it was the first game that made me do things because i reacted to what was happening on screen instead of thinking "oh it´s a game, just kill everything!".

3.final fantasy 7, which i never finished because then all my self made conspiracy theories of who? why? what? would undoubtly be proven false. this was the first game that somewhat managed to engage me emotionally(when sector 7 gets crushed for example), although many things about it appear a bit cheesy now when i look back.

Bioshock. It was too immersive like you where actually going to get hit by those splicers.

Fallout 3 is fairly close. Actually fallout 3 probably because of how you live in the world and the way you discover things was tasteful indeed.

Honestly, Metal Gear Solid. I played that game so much, that during basic training, I could play it in my head during PT.

Next would be Final Fantasys.
