Bioshock. Yeah, I'm bringing some originality to this thread.
It was one of the few games that nearly made me pee myself with fear. I should probably stop admitting that...
Yeah that was my problem. It was too real and claustrophobic and nothing is more terrifying than a city under the sea with water slowly leaking in.

The Darkness was pretty immersive for me, you looked down and you had legs and a body, losing was dealt with in the context of the game and it all just seemed very "I can go with this", plus it was fun to play.

My top 3 would be

1) Half life: opposing force...yes its probably blasphemy to have enjoyed it more then half life...but for some reason I felt a lot more sympathie for cpl Shepard whos thrown into the mix and...well I won't spoil the end but he definatly did not expected some down time.

2) Kotor: This game just suck me right in....solid game play and story line with all the twist and turns....loved it.

3) Jedi Knight: Dark forces II....An older game that not a lot of people heard of...but its a little gem...Following the story of Kyle Katarn you go throught plenty of enviroments, get plenty of guns and end up with some badass force power. Definatly got me into FPS way back when. Also the Real life cut scene are a rarety with hads a fresh breeze to the game...even if a bit cheesy

Pong.

Within minutes, I was hooked. My mind was swallowed into that deep, dark, perilous void and I could really feel the anguish and ammassed resentment building up inside of the oppressed left paddle as the cruel and merciless right paddle tormented him, carelessly slapping away each generous gift and making subtle, insinuating gestures, as if to say; "I went UP and DOWN on your mum last night."

Mass Effect drew me in, to this day Bioware is the only one player games I'll buy
thats how they do it.... personally their games need more combat.... don't change it just add a bit more.
I can agree with that, I like a good story, but the walk and talk for half an hour sections are what usually make me save and come back later.
Mass effect is a good example 20% walking, 30% talking, 10% elivators 5% all guns, full squad, unlimited ammo, the force in all(sadly enemies die quick), solid action...... O and 45% DRIVING THE MAKO.

Dragon age was the best for the story (never played baulders gate but hey sue me) maybe because that was the only character who was not "set" {revan, shep, random chinese people who look like MK ripoffs, you know that MK deception story mode}. There was nothing to the character, he/she was just a random person and the dialoge options were deeper and were more complex. You actualy got to play the characters background....(even though that was the best part of the game.)
I'm liking the game. However the Heals aren't really that good to warrant the long cool downs they have. I do miss my character having a real voice though. I liked that about Mass Effect that your character would speak.

Mass Effect I love that game and has stolen many many hours of my life and to be honest I don't want them back. Infact...
I knew beforehand about that suicide mission and I didn't want to kill off any of them so I just stopped playing the game. Eventually I manned up and did it anyway

By genre, not ranked or anything:

RTS - Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2, Command and Conquer: Generals: Zero Hour and Company of Heroes (is that blood in my adrenaline?)

FPS - Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Half-Life 2, Team Fortress 2, Killing Floor, Battlefield-series (nearly any game in that series), Dark Messiah (single player only), Natural Selection (HL1-mod), S.T.A.L.K.E.R. (both).

RPG - Fallout 3, Chrono Trigger (for its story and position-based, nearly real-time battles), Puzzle Quest.

Driving games - umm.. Trackmania.. only car game I'm able to enjoy (not very long though).

Sport games - STARS.. or something (soccer).. due to one single thing: there was a button which made every player on your team go to the closest member of the opponent's team and tackle him. You won't believe how fun it is to watch that poor excuse (personal opinion) of a game break down and die as a 10 year-old.

I might have missed some.

Do you mean immersive or addictive? Because I think some of you are mixing the two up. World of Warcraft was addicting, I would play for maybe 24 hours without eating. But that doesn't mean i was immersted in the game. I didn't feel like I was my avatar. I felt immersed while playing Splinter Cell Chaos Theory because I would literally stop breathing when a guard walked by hoping he wouldn't notice me. I felt a signaler sensation in CoD MW2's campaign (not multiplayer) when I literally thought I had shell shock. I don't think I have come across a game were I was truly immersed to the point of addiction though.

FEAR (both of them), AvP 2, Metroid Prime (1 and 2), and really, Morrowind was pretty immersive when I first played it. Now it's not as great, because it's not quite immersive enough for you to become immersed despite it's age (something AvP 2 does quite well. It's not a good looking game, but it still scares the shit out of you. And I can guarantee if you play it, you will shoot that fucking pipe).

Offline:

SW-KOTOR. I set my alarm-clock in the morning at about 7am and played until midnight, for 1 and a half week I think?

Online: Clearly Ultima Online (Freeshard). My "Abitur" (High-School final certificate) went down about 2 grades because of that game.

Far Cry 2. Call me a massive retard, but the decision making (I played on the hardest difficulty) and overall use of the first person perspective drew me into the game.
