Any of COD games on Veteran can be a real *****.

And Far Cry 1? Seriously? Ignoring the fact that most of the enemies in the first part of the game are avoidable, the game eventually gives you friggen regenerating health without the low threshold of damage normally associated with that kind of feature!

Actraiser 2 should get a mention, was very disappointing considering how good the first one was but man was it tough

F-Zero GX's story mode makes me cry.

It's pretty hard, too.
I still can't beat the damn ghost. Took me a solid week to get to the last race, but I always fall off.

And God hand is very brutal, still can't beat that.

But my vote would be for, ninja gaiden. I've never beaten the fisrt boss.

I was able to beat battletoads but only with my brother, he's a lot better than me at the older games.

You must be talking about some kinder, patched or ported version of Far Cry 1. Let me tell you about the Far Cry 1 to which PC gamers were introduced.

FIRST HALF

Fun, engaging free world sneak/shoot/sabotage gameplay where you skulk through the undergrowth picking off confused goons and occasionally running in naked terror when somebody you missed wanders into the bush you've been hiding under and steps on you.

SECOND HALF

Retarded monsters that can jump across the level, kill you in one hit, and take about 30 assault rifle headshots to kill.

And the fucking volcano, jesus christ. At that point the designers are just going 'we have your money, fuck you.'

It was never free world, first off. It was extremely linear, albeit the "lanes" of travel, so to speak, were fairly wide.

And unless the xbox version was significantly easier (which it shouldn't have been, considering the lack of the keyboard+mouse), you are exaggerating. The "monsters", though strong, were not as strong as your character was. If you remember, he too could jump across the level, kill things in one hit, and take a ridiculous amount of damage to take down. That is to not acknowledge that you were exaggerating, as nothing (apart from maybe those goons at the very end) took that many shots to take down.

Ninja Gaiden 1 was the first and only game I gave up on because it was too hard. I traded it in, and shortly after I was informed that you could level up your swords.

Made it through half the game with weapons that might as well have regenerated their health.

Farcry?
I'll admit that I had to cheat at the bit where you have to run down the stream, with the monsters all over the place. I ****ed up and blsted my self right before the check point and had 1HP and 7 bullets took all of that to down the monster at the start. Found no-clip got to a health pack then turned it off. That's after I tried for two hours to get to that damn chopper. I almost made it then I got blind sided by a monster, after that I said "**** this, I either cheat or redo the damn last chapter!"

I beat the game on hard, not hardest so maybe that's what I'm missing? But I just sniped most of the sodiers in the fisrt half, saveing all of my "big" guns till the monsters showed up.

You didn't have the "powers" in the PC FarCry, IIRC. You are talking about "instinct" or something of the like, right? Yeah, the Xbox version was easier, because it was toned down for the controller and Jack had the powers.

Tetris with the speed all the way up (with the double cheat on), and the excess blocks all the way up.

It's essentially impossible.

You're talking about Far Cry Instincts, a completely different game. I'm talking about Far Cry on the PC, the very first Far Cry game.

And for those of you who haven't played it, the volcano is the game's final challenge. Let me set the scene for you:

You are standing on the rim of a dormant volcanic caldera. Its walls descend majestically before you. Standing on those walls, on all sides, are dozens of vicious rapists with murder in their eyes and direct line of sight. You cannot go back. You cannot go forward. You must kill every single fucking one of them, with your fingernails if necessary.

How to beat it: climb on top of a blazing petroleum tank, hold down the trigger and scream, "Top of the world, ma!"

(The only realistic way to beat it is to cheat by wedging open the door back to safety. If by some miracle you do get through all that, the ending is a serious up-yours.)

Steel Battalion was pretty ridiculous... not only did you have to learn how to use the giant, over-sized custom controller with a million buttons and toggle switches, you also had essentially only two lives and no saves. If you destroyed your mech more than once, you had to start all over from the beginning...

That would make sense then, I wasn't aware it was more than a simple port.

I saw the controller for that game once, and decided immediately that I would never be able to play it. Then I actually played it, and decided that I was completely correct the first time. >_> At least my expectations weren't betrayed...

one of the hardest for me was killzone 2 on the highest difficulty setting -.- you have practically the same health as the people your shooting and they're almost as accurate as you are -.-

In all fairness, I really liked the controller once I got past the learning curve. It added to the immersion significantly....

Oh yes, I forgot to mention that 75% of the viewing area on the screen was taken up with gauges and displays, leaving only a postage stamp sized window to see the actual action...?

EDIT: AND the fact that the game acted like it was going to give you a tutorial on the first level, but instead your base is attacked by surprise and you have to blindly charge into battle having no idea how to pilot the mech?

I could go on....
