Like the title says, I want to know what you think is the most legendary game series of all time. Please take into account popularity, game sales within the series(games included must have a direct link with all others in the series, as in no Mario Golf included in Mario series), and overall impact of the series throughout it's history.

My selection is the obvious Super Mario series. Super Mario Bros. basically set the standard for 2-D side scrolling. Each 2-D Mario game that followed was better than its previous version, then like the original before it, Super Mario 64 pretty much set the standard for 3-D gaming. After that Super Mario Galaxy showed that Nintendo is the king when it comes to unique and innovative level design. Some of the levels in this game were as mind-blowing as the first time I played Portal, and that happened during a lot of Galaxy's levels.

Nobody does what Ninten...uh...do? Sure, that works.

Halo. Halo 3 had 3 million pre-orders (I believe), it brought shooters to the console and a whole generation of gamers with it. Truly an epic series in my opinion.

No. Perfect Dark did that on the N64 and the various and sundry Doom and Duke Nuke 'em games before that.

The list according to Wikipedia says the Mario series is the best.
However, I won't say my choice. Why?

[yoda]Strong potential for flame thread, this has.[/yoda]

This sort of proves my point.

I'll go for the Shin Megami Tensei games in this one. Just cuz I like the plot.

but the zelda series is not bad either, as long as you don't mind using the same dude in each game, over and over. (I don't, as long as I don't have navy)

Its got to be Mario. I gave up on Nintendo over a decade ago, but things are what they are. I love Halo and its universe (although I'm not very good at it) but Mario is pretty much the standard-bearer for identifiable franchises.

The Space Quest series.

God, how I miss it.

God, how I hate being the only one who probably gives a shit these days.

However, I feel that we have a spiritual successor to it in the Ratchet and Clank games, so I consider it a win.

Grand Theft Auto.

Not because it's necessarily the best or most popular game series, and although it can be argued it popularised (or even started) a genre, the main reason is that because of all the press it's received, good and bad, it is the most legendary game series.

Even people who don't play games know the name, whenever a young person steals a car or commits a violent crime, the media brings it up, such is the legend of Grand Theft Auto.

I'm gonna agree with Mario. But, I personally side with Silent Hill everytime, even with the horrid American movie and last installment.

Well for me there really should be no choice but Halo, because it brought millions of people together and over the course of just ten years it became one of the most recognised franchises in the business. It began with the humble beginning of being a little game that no one had much in the way of high expectations for and ended as one of the biggest game franchises in existance right now. People loved it, play single player, play multiplayer, play online, dress up as Masterchief... it's iconic of a very strange generation.
Yes Halo 3 was not without overhype but I feel that was still part of beauty of it, peeps got excited and all were brought together in the wake of its release. I honestly just think few game franchises have had that kind of impact on the mainstream audience and considering how young the series is relativley I got to say... something great was born there.

EDIT: this makes Halo post number... I don't know, a big one though for me... so for fairness sake I'll also mention Mario.

well if you're going on numbers like that than it would be the Sims series. That is the greatest selling game series of all time.
I didn't try to claim that it was the best selling game of ever, I just wanted to give reason to
why I thought the Halo series was legendary with an estimated statistic

I didn't mean first to the fight in the genre, more like the game that made shooters for casual players.
