Really? No one's gonna say anything about Metroid or Castlevania? Yes, Mario and Zelda are both dandy, but neither one really has any continuity.
People would debate that. There is most certainly a Zelda continuity, we just don't know exactly what it is.

It's true, the continuity question is debatable for both franchises. I honestly look at each game as a stand alone game, but it is up for debate.

Really, I'm a bit sad to see some of the (IMO) greatest game legacies going completely ignored, but it is what it is.

Personally don't like Halo all that much anymore... I had Halo 1 and then Halo 2. And then I was dissapointed by the ending. Then I heard Halo 3 was coming out , and I facepalmed.

OT Though... I really enjoyed the Mechwarrior series, it was one of the first video games I was introduced to.

I don't think it has anything to do with continuity. If so, then you would have to also leave out Final Fantasy, and even Castlevania, because of the new one by Kojima, which apparently has nothing to do with the old series.

How about Metal Gear series? Now there's one with continuity. And i know a few people who swear by the series.

Personally, I'd say the Halo series. Not only did Halo 1,2, and 3 do absolutely amazing, but its spawned 6 books (soon to be 9) 3 comic book series, and 4 soundtrack CDs. Plus, ODST is coming out in two days, and thats probably gonna do amazing too.

Halo. Halo 3 had 3 million pre-orders (I believe), it brought shooters to the console and a whole generation of gamers with it. Truly an epic series in my opinion.
This is proof that despite all those hip studies, video games arent making people smarter

The Legend of Zelda.

c'mon guys, its right in the name
You don't need to insult me for my (and a lot of other people's) preference. I don't judge you for liking LoZ just because it's not a game I like.
'

im not judging you for liking halo. I like halo, in spite of everything thats wrong with it.
i'm judging you for saying HALO brought shooters to consoles.

and as for the generation of gamers it brought up... Well, i think we should just throw it out and try again from scratch :)

seriously, can anyone honestly say they dont want to go back in time and abort all those little Xbox 12 year olds? Or is it just me? crap, i bet its just me. dammit.

The truly amazing thing is that this series did all that it has in just a span of ten years. People yell "milk!", but on average they've released a new game every 2 years, with one being in a totally different genre(rts, it's original intended genre, if I remember correctly?), and as popular as the series is, they could've done the L4D/Madden treatment and whipped one out every year.

A video game, which tons consider not to be art, crushed world record sales of all pop culture artforms, including music, film, and well, just about anything. In just ten years of being on the market as a pop icon.

i'm not even that big a fan of Halo, but i can recognize what it has done for the video game industry.

You can't have just one "legendary" game; that makes all the others really jealous. As a result, I'm not going to add fuel to this fire.

Well, thanks for clicking on the thread to tell us that.

And what about Pac-Man? If the average gamer is in their thirties(I read it somewhere a while back, I think), then surely, most of them got there start back when Pac-Man was at the top of its popularity, possibly creating more gamers than any other game, based on the popularity of games as a whole at the time. Some people, like my parents, only recognize Pac-Man, when asked about video games.

What if we took the casual, or non-gamer into mind when thinking about our choice? What would be the answer then?

Those games (Im talking about the series, look at the title of the thread).

They had a great storyline, where fun to play, had great level, awesome and funny characters, had many game mechanics (from shooting to riding in various vehicles to controlling robots).

Admittedly, the first one was the weakest in the series, but the series all together were some of the best games of all time.

How many games have guns that shoot atomic bombs, robot suits, flying cars, and hilarious ottsels?
If it weren't for Daxter's PSP exclusive, I would say you should have said "the Jak series". Sorry.

It's true that each game was 100 times better than the one before it; but to say, even personally, that the series is legendary just means you need to expand.

R&C has a Mini-Nuke Launcher in Going Commando, Clank's giant mode is much cooler than the Titan suit AND is actually explained, and it has both flying cars AND space ships. All of these came one installment earlier; and a Lombax is plenty close enough to an ottsel/precursor for me.
Daxter deserves part of the fame! They shouldn't have cut his name from the title!

But is Lombax sexy?

Probably anything Nintendo ever made, just because of it's nostalgia factor and the resilience of Nintendo franchises being matched only by a wall in a game of tennis (seriously its about time for some of those to die).

Perhaps Disgaea? It didn't bring anything new to turn based strategy, but it brought everything together with enough content to end a social life and what seems like the last genuinely funny and entertaining story in forever. I can't say the same for the second or third though (The characters aren't as lovable and the dialog/plot feels forced. I came for the story and stayed for the game play).

So yeah just refuted myself. Sorry flamers.
