Mario: more popular than God since 2005

He was more popular on and off before that, but he's been consistently more popular than 2005.

If that won't sell games I don't know what will.

Planescape Torment nearly eleven years later and nothing has even come close to the setting that it created it dripped unique from every pour in its being (okay bar using the Infinity Engine but it was stil great) so very compelling.

And I was never, never into AD&D usualy bored me to fucking tears.

It has to be Mario, it was iconic. Personally I'd say Zelda but that is so much more restricted to 'serious' gamers, it just didn't have the same reach Mario has/had to non-gamers. These are seriously the games that started it all.

I'm surprised that halo has been given so much credit, let's not forget that this includes PC games series, Halo couldn't even pretend to have been as revolutionary as the old iD shooters (Wolf 3d, Doom series etc). In real terms halo was a long time in the making and was carefully selected by microsoft to be the image of xbox. Yes, it's certianly an influencial game, but most legendary is probably a bit much at this stage. I feel that the Diablo series should get an honorable mention, and especially starcraft (it is a telivised sport in some parts of the world).

Here's another question. I'm an ignorant console-exclusive gamer who knows nothing of PC games, the only ones I've ever played were three games in the Myst series(Riven, Exile, and Revelation), and I played those on console systems. The question is, what's the most Legendary PC game series?

EDIT - kind of ninja'd by Dys.

Daxter deserves part of the fame! They shouldn't have cut his name from the title!

But is Lombax sexy?
Why the Hell would I find an ottsel OR a Lombax sexy? What the fuck does that even have to do with anything?
Are you saying Orange Lightning isn't the sexiest videogame character of all time?

I would say Half-Life, though that selection is mostly because a little fanboy dwarf jumping on my brain.

Half-Life was the first FPS that had a good story and the first FPS with some other elements than just run and shoot and get to the other side of the map as fast as possible. Sure, Halo are sometimes greater than the Gods but there wouldn't have been any Halo without Half-Life. Notable too are the fact that the mod communty exploded with Half-Life.

Though am I perfectly honest with myself I would pick Mario. As IGN pointed out very truly: "Super Mario Bros. is gaming."

Well, that they are flipping awesome, but still, how many other people actually think that they are the best ever? Did the games as a whole impact the industry in any way? The only thing I saw them do was get a bunch of guys into jpop.

...and I'm gonna say Pokemon. There isn't a single person who doesn't know about it (even if they pronounce it "Pokeeman").

I've never had any interest in Pokemon, but you're right, everyone knows about Pokemon. As for your chart, well, look at the peaks. I know that it's all about overall traffic, but this is also taking into account all things Mario, not all things Super Mario. I'd be surpised if any game had as high a peak as Halo 3. Feel free to prove me wrong, though.

It really depends on what you're judging a series on.... I mean, I see Mario and I instantly think Nintendo.... Master Chief does the same thing for XBox...

You can't understate the accomplishments of Final Fantasy, Mario, Halo or even a Tomb Raider, GTA, Warcraft, Zelda, etc.

There are several series that have reached legendary status, and it really depends on what you play. For me, I've never played any game series more than I played the Halo series, not even Mario. For other people it will be different. It is pointless to compare.

Well, I wasn't really thinking about your personal game series, more along the lines of a general consensus on what the most important game series of all time is. As far as impact on the industry as a whole is concerned.

Impact on the industry? Mario... hands down... no other series / character has done more to revolutionize gaming.

I am going to say the legacy of kain series.....the story line was epic and while at times hard to follow with all the twist and turns, it one of the better written story lines out there....to bad the creative genius behind all the games other then the first blood omen is dead and we may never get to see the last game that ties everything up in a nice little package

I'm not really sure what i think is the most legendary game series ever but i'm a little irritated at how Mario vs. Halo this is... and now Zelda joined the fray. Kudos to anyone who named something else.

I would say Neverwinter Nights, but NWN2 was so meh compared to the first.

Red Alert series. Okay the third wasn't so good than it could've been, but few sequels are.
