Pick one of these:
  • Fight Club
    The Sixth Sense
    Star Wars
    Toy Story
    The Usual Suspects.
Totally not The Sixth Sense. I knew the ending ten minutes into the movie. It was still entertaining, but there were no surprises. Good call on The Usual Suspects, though. Didn't see that one coming. I should probably see that again some day...

Show me a man not surprised by the Sixth Sense and I'll show you a liar.
Meh. I didn't know what it was about going into the theater, but it was hard to avoid knowing that there was some sort of plot twist, since everyone made such a big deal about not spoiling it, and once you're watching out for that, it pretty much telegraphs it to you in the intro, even if you don't know what you're looking for, particularly if you've seen the trailers ahead of time.

For those of you mentioning KotOR, I was actually somewhat disappointed by it, because there was another RPG that came out at almost the same time with a very similar twist that pulled it off much better, in my opinion, partially because of a somewhat novel gameplay/storytelling mechanism it had.

Anyone who's played both KotOR and Baten Kaitos probably knows exactly what I'm talking about. It has the same "You're the bad guy!"-type reveal in the middle of the story, but the way it's presented and the way it's hidden from you felt a little more plausible within the story/universe and better integrated with the first half of the game instead of just suddenly and abruptly dumped on you with a few vague, jumbled flashbacks. KotOR's still a better game overall, but I thought BK did a great job with that aspect of the story.

Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood, had an interesting twist in it, plus I've never actually read the manga so any surprises in that show, were quite shocking for me. My favourite one so far is.

note: Spoiler is major, don't click unless you've seen pass episode 28 of Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood.

Ling Yao, becoming the new Greed, I was expecting him to die, but the fact that he became an hommuculi, was shocking.

I watched oldboy a couple of weeks ago. Man...that film wouldn't have gotten made here. But I recommend it if you like having your mind blown.
I second his post in all possible ways.Oldboy is just simply amazing. And the twist he's talking about just comes out of nowhere and hits in the face, but in the best way possible.
I'm not sure that there's really a "good" way for that to happen, much less a best way. I'm usually pretty hard to surprise/shock, particularly with fictional things, but that whole part of the movie had even me going, "Man, you guys are fucked up." Still liked it as a movie, and I kind of want to see it again some day, but that stuff just isn't right. Maybe more like getting punched in the stomach and having the wind knocked out of you than getting hit in the face. Heh.

I guess my favorite is Kotor.
Although I did see it coming, it was still awesome.
*SPOILERZ*

It was like "I must get up and fight teh Evil!", and then Malak goes "no... ur teh Evil!"
What a funny plot twist.

I also liked that of Fight Club. (just watched it today... awesome movie)

What was the twist in Toy Story?
There wasn't I just threw it in to see how many people noticed it. You're the first.
Oh, phew! :D.

I thought in my childhood ignorance I had completely missed a plot twist when I viewed the film. You had me there for a second.

One of my favourites is in the finale to the second season to NCIS
They raid a building with a bunch of terrorists in and clear it out. They get to the top, clear that and stop the terror plan. They a guy who hid comes on to the roof and takes a shot at the leader. One of the operatives jumps in the way and takes the bullet. The other two take out the guy. Then you're like "Oh my God! She's dead" and then you're like "Wait no, she's probably got a bulletproof vest on" and sure enough, she does. She gets helped up the it's like "Wow, that almost ended badly". Then BAM, sniper bullet to the head. It comes the fuck out of nowhere, and that's her, dead.
That was an amazing finale, and the start of series 3 picked the ball up straight away.

The series is really good, Tony and Director Shepard have their own undercover thing going, tony is dating a girl that turns out to be a ruse to get to an arms dealer, the CIA are in on it to take over the arms trade, last episode Tony has his car blown up whilst it's in motion, what a cliff hanger! I want to watch that series again now.

I may just be dense and did not see it coming but when Master Li kills you, that through me for a loop.
Absolutely agree.
I genuinely think it was a clever twist. And that from someone who for the most part is strongly opposed to convoluted plot and intrigue.

Kevin Spacey is...

...actually, if I tell you he'll kill me, you too and our families, in fact I've said too much already.
This this this. If anyone ever tries to tell me they figured out that twist before the end of the movie, I immediately dismiss them as a liar and kick them in the jimmies. Easily the most amazing movie twist ever.
Sorry, but I have to at least say I suspected him the most of being who he was. I doubted myself near the end though. The main reason was:

Since my dad told me it had a great twist ending before hand, I analyzed every bit of the intro. There was one bit in it where he changes hands with his weapon, from right to left. When I saw Verbal disabled on the left side, it was the biggest clue for me. It was important that he switched hands and the only character it would be important to would be Verbal.

OddWorld: Stranger's Wrath had a pretty good twist at the end. That was about as good as the end of Assassins Creed after reading all of the files.

Okay, well my thoughts on the subject are that I don't consider the mere inclusion of a surprise or shock moment to be a real plot twist, nor are cliffhanger endings (which are something in of themselves). For something to be a plot twist there has to be a plot continueing after the story, a twist ending is something else entirely.

One of the problems I have with many "surprises" in movies and such is that there are very few new ones. All of them are cool the first time you see them, but as you get older, see more movies, and become more jaded, you realize how repetitive things get. I can't say I've seen much real originality in years, and what originality comes around is typically beaten to into the ground by an immediate influx of imitators, some of which will probably actually improve on the original work even if they lack the newness.

Going back to one of the most classic twists, read an old story called "The Purloined Letter". Today you might go "well what's so special about that?" but then consider when that was written (and by whom, if you don't know) and you'll rapidly realize that a lot of those twists are simply variations on one of the oldest mystery/surprise stories of all time. Leading me to occasionally sit there and rate whethere something is a GOOD version of that story/twist or not rather than going "OMG, that was original". There are other unique twists that are just as classic and recycled that get the same reaction, but that one is perhaps the all time classic/most used type of twist.

But then again I'm 34, and while not greatly older than a lot of people posting here I think that even coming up in "residential facilities" I think even a scant few years made a lot of differance in the educational system. It seems that shortly after I graduated High School and even Jr. High stopped encouraging children to read a lot of classic literature, probably for political reasons (as everything is left wing nowadays, as opposed to providing writers who lean in differant directions with differant messages and letting people make their own desicians). The writings of Kurt Vonnegut, Edgar Allan Poe, HP Lovecraft (to an extent), Robert Heinlan, Issac Asimov, were all on my required reading lists through the years for various reasons. Today it seems someone says "well we'll hand them some Hemmingway and Steinbeck and call it educational reading" without other writers in counterpoint they lose a lot of impact. A lot of slightly more modern writers are also overlooked. I'll also say that I feel people like Herman Melville have lost a lot of their relevency, and today 90% of what people say about them are trying to project modern opinions onto writings that were devoid of them being totally out of context. With someone like Vonnegut, Heinlan, or Asimov as fantastic as the stories might be at times it's pretty obvious the points they try and make and why they are relevent, or remain that way.

I for example think Asimov's "Foundation" series should be read through an entire year in school as part of a "Reading" or "literature" class or whatever they call it. The reason being is that as it goes on, it pretty much analyzes and generates thought about pretty much every social and political system to exist on any major level in the last few levels, and as it goes on the philsophy lionized and "saving the day" in one story doesn't nessicarly fare so well in another. The ending (which took him a long time to get there) is pretty incredible, and let's just say it winds up supporting a system that I don't agree with, however I believe that's half the point of the story especially given some of the final comments. Not to mention that if you've read it all as of the climax on earth's moon everyone is going to have their own opinions as to what the right path for humanity should have been.

I'm one of those people who would say Foundation is quite probably the best and most continously relevent science fiction series every written.

The ending to the the film Of Mice and Men. Jesus, that was sad...
You do realize that pretty much every major event in that book was foreshadowing what would happen right? There was no other way it could have ended. "I should've killed my own dog myself..."

I love that book, but it wasn't surprising.

I remember watching my brother play through Ocarina of Time back in the days of King N64 the Great and Benevolent, and I remember being blown away when Ganondorf got into the Sacred Realm because you got the Master Sword. Of course, that would be topped today, but still that was my most surprised plot twist.
