I know a lot of games go for the generic monsters nowadays, but I'm wondering what games actually put the effort into making something original and scary, so name the game, the monster, and why

p.s. if you can post a picture and explain what it is that monster did, that'd be awesome

The fucking Malboro's from Final Fantasy gave me nightmares as a child.

And were a nightmare in the game, thanks to all the status effects.

I've always thought that the Big Daddy and Little Sister from Bioshock were really well implemented and scary. It's always scarier when the humanity of something is still there, albeit transformed in some way. I think it all goes back to the uncanny valley.

Not the most original but it's one of the cooler and creepier ones I can remember off the top of my head:

The Leaper from Dead Space. A hideous living corpse with a tail made out of organic tissue with a barbed stinger on the end and it moves around in zero gravity... wow.
And let's no forget its winning smile:

In b4:

The Regenerators from RE4. Their breathing sound makes Darth Vader's sound like a kitten's purr!

As someone who doesn't play a lot of scary horror games on the grounds of being embarrassingly jumpy, I can't really vouch for their originality at all, but I'd say 80% of all the monsters in Koudelka, on the PSOne, were fucking creepy.

The end boss was scary as shit- I actually drew it for a class on "creation of monsters" and got a scream out of one of the Rumbold twins. Good times.

Edit: Oh, I forgot to say why... well, I'm not sure really. Perhaps it's because a lot of them were based on a human model, but with subtly off, like with limbs on backwards, or broken joints. I particularly remember the little black foetus monsters...

Anything from Dead Space, because you know that those things were formerly human.

Anything from Silent Hill, because those things are a play on your own worst fears. Plus you never know if they're actually human and you're just insane.

As for specific monsters, those table enemies from Persona 3 that attack you with floating plates and cutlery (not to mention elemental fury). Just because.

Split Head, the first boss from Silent Hill on the PS One, was the moment when the series won me over. It went, "Ok, creepy, but typical Japanese import horrid voice acting, arbitrary puzzles, and dodgy controls and OHMYGODdiediediedie!"

Nothing has ever recreated that feeling for me, if only because it was the first time that the tech allowed something like that to occur. Once it's been done, the shock value is gone.

Pyramid Head.

Now he's overused and pretty much become fanservice, but the first time I played Silent Hill 2 he was terrifying.
Hmmm, not sure I buy overused, well, except the movie. In SH:H, he has two scenes, one which is a necessary weasel to establish he is present, and the other where he does exactly what he's always done; act as some kind of arbitrary enforcer and punish a character who to a great extent deserves it. (Edit: I remember noticing the Great Knife was replaced by an immense bayonet in that game. Neat.) Now, the -fans-, yes, they overuse and push the character until even people who know nothing else about the series know Pyramid Head.

Just think, right now some creepy fangirl is writing fanfic where...

You know what? Yes. Pyramid Head. Most horrifying thing ever. Now I need to bleach my brain.

I really enjoyed the demons from the first doom game. Some of those were pretty damn original.

Most of the monsters in Siren: Blood Curse are really disturbing.

First there are these demented, bleeding-from-the-eyes zombie-like things, who still say "normal" things with their demon voices and still do things they used to do as normal people... A horrible parody of normal humans.

Then you find out that the bleeding from the eyes isn't just a visual gimmick, because later enemies actually have mutated in all kinds of horrible ways, such as insectoid wings protuding from the eyes, or the entire head snapped backwards, walking on all fours.

Terrible.

That's how terrible.

Snacker!

You enter the water, maybe in an attempt to save the blue Jinjo, maybe you were flying and ran out of red feathers or accidentally hit the 'Z' button and ground pounded into deep water. But the horrible music starts to play, you know he's coming. Maybe you don't see him at first, maybe you do. Never have I been so fear stricken than the many times scrambling back to shore with this thing swimming behind me taking bites out of Banjo's hairy arse.

I've noticed chase scenes are the scariest part of games for me. Like the regenerating necromorph in Dead Space or the Invisible water thing in Amnesia. Even a game of Chasey/Tag in real life brings about some primal instinct of self preservation in me. It becomes more than a game, escape becomes a matter of life or death.

The beheaded kamikaze in Serious Sam. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagh. Positively nerve-wracking.
The ones with bombs on their hands?
Was my first thought too when i saw this thread... Although they arent that scary, you surely know that shit is going down when you hear them scream...

Otherwise i would say the ghosts in Metro 2033, although they dont chase you or anything it sure gave me chills when you discover them in a camp filled with corpses or other places... And the ghost child that gets killed by the ghost nosalis in the trainwagon is pretty pants-shitting too...

[HEADING=1]Enjoy your nostalgic nightmares.[/HEADING]

In all seriousness, Dead Hand was by far the creepiest thing in the Shadow Temple; even more so than Bongo Bongo. There is just something about all of those grasping hands.

Truly original, and completely horrifying.
