MGS4, easily. The rest of the series is genius and amazing, but MGS4 is just horrible.

Look now people: the over-rated threads are essentially troll/list threads with a funny mask on. All it takes is for one person to say one bad thing about a franchise that other people like, and WHAMMO: the thread becomes flame war central. Not to mention we get the Hater Hive Mind kicking in: a good part of the first page is peppered with THIS or THIS style posts.
Right now, almost all the posts I see are just listing off popular franchises and moving on, with little to no explanation. And, to be honest, the only way you COULD give a proper explanation is by writing a review of it... which isn't what this section is meant for.
A couple of things...
1. Thank you VanityGirl. I completely forgot about the hype that was Fable. (although possibly because I completely disregard anything that Peter Molyneux SAYS)
2. Sorry to the original poster. I did not mean to imply that you didn't understand the difference only that some of the posts seem to be using them interchangeably.
3. Every one will have their own opinions on what is over-rated or over-hyped but I think that people should give opinions as to WHY they think so. That way, for instance, if a person genuinely didn't think the original Halo lived up to what was expected the rest of the people can try to understand the reasoning.
4. I understand that some people have only recently played Ocarina of Time or other games that were popular in the past, but please stop comparing the games to the current generation. It is rather unfair to take an 11 year old game and use the current standards as a measuring bar.
5. I would like to throw Metal Gear Solid 2 into the fire as well. The game teased us with a demo using Snake and we end up with the whiney Raiden for the majority of the game, which, for the most part was all talk and no play. 65 minutes of cutscenes with 5 minutes of play to end the game is not very interactive.

Halo,gears,Star wars "I am unfinished but have DLC!!11" unleashed...Bioshock....oh hell add every other modern A-AAA title.....

One and Two were really solid, revolutionary games, but 3 was weak offered nothing except a further putrification of an already weak plot. And yet people still acted like Jesus was wanking in their faces.
It's not a bad game. It's almost even a good game. But compared to COD4, it's a steaming pile of shit.

Thankfully I wasn't expecting a next gen San Andreas but I thought we'd at least get a next gen GTA3. GTA4 was more like a really nice looking GTA clone while Saints Row 2 ended up being the new GTA. The clone has become the master. Even the GTA4 dlc didn't do much but add more of the same; mostly story missions. Maybe the next one will make up for it but who knows how long they're going to beat that dead horse for. Either way, I'm looking forward to Saints Row 3 more.
Halo 3 was very overrated, although it is a good game so it deserved SOME of the hype. It's only failure is that it did not improve over Halo 2, in fact it was a step backwards.
GTA 4 is easily the most over-hyped game ever, even compared to Halo 3. People hailed it as the second coming of christ, and honestly I didn't even like the game. Like Yahtzee said in his review, it pales in comparison to Saints Row 2 in the most important category: fun.
Bioshock had a great atmosphere, but I always felt that the gameplay was an afterthought. Also, the ending was terrible. The fact that it won Game of the Year over CoD4 and Mass Effect from so many mags and websites is just pathetic, and makes me believe they didn't play through the whole game.
