Lightsabres should be the the most overpowered weapons in gaming, yet somehow they always turn out to be as effective as a baton made out of wool.

So what's the most overpowered, underpowered, broken or just poorly balanced thing in a video game you've come across?

For me, it has to be a Hero Team Deathmatch in LotR: Conquest. If not that, then the hero Aragon from the same game >.>

FFVI: Autocrossbow. Literally the, "Oh fuck this" button, use it on any enemy and if it won't kill them the first time, use it again. Insanely OP.
If I recall correctly this weapon becomes nearly useless later on in the game, when instead the solution to any problem becomes equipping one of your characters with the Gem Box and Equalizer and casting a couple Ultimas on anything that moves. Even makes the final battle a cakewalk...

Are you kidding? They've got a high damage potential but I've seen more moronic death knights pushing under 2k dps than any other class.

Arcanine from Pokémon. It's unbelievably easy to get Growlithe, and he sucks. Throw a Firestone at him, however, and suddenly he gets about plus 20 to every stat and is gaining 4 attack per level, not to mention STAB on Flamethrower and learning ExtremeSpeed naturally.

Pfah, small fry.
Enchant arrows/sword: On hit Fire Damage 1sec, Fire Weakness 100% 1 sec. Munches through everything.
Or on hit Burden/Strength Drain.

The classic though is to enchant 5 pieces of armour with Chameleon 20%. Yes it stacks. You are permanently invisible.[/quote]

This cost a lot of money but was so much fun. Also, getting a Sneak skill of 100 made the game so damn broken, as most characters cant see you no matter how close you are, in any direction. oh, and paintbrushes dont have gravity applied to them, so they can be stepping stones, allowing you to get to unreachable locations in about 5-10 minutes. plus the multiplication glitch for infinite money and arrows and scrolls. or the ability to permanently attach the effects of a ring to you, so you could stack huge amounts of immunities like shield, or chameleon, or health. am i missing anything? oh! the ability to glitch the grey fox's mask off him before the quest line ends. :D i knew a lot of glitches for oblivion (sorry i messed up the quote, im new)

I was wondering how long it would be until someone brought up WoW. Death Knights might have been insanely overpowered when they first came out, but now they're just kind of pathetic in PvP.

For all the crap WoW gets about being unbalanced, it's actually balanced pretty well for a game with 10 classes and 30 subspecs.

Back to the point, I'd say mages in Dragon Age. Spell Might + Blizzard + Tempest can flatten huge groups of enemies in seconds. Add to that Virulent Walking Bomb and the AoE potential is just insane.

I don't care what anyone says, nobody should be able to solo a herioc dungeon of their level, nobody. It's just wrong.

MAgic in oblivion, followed by everything else in the game.
Strictly speaking, Illusion magic. This is my 'How To Win At Oblivion' guide;

- Get the invisibility spell
- Get some sneaking skill
- Get a sword
- Go invisible, get behind monster, crouch, hit monster with sword. The critical from sneak will give a 6x damage modifier, and even if they don't die, you're behind them and still sneaking so they'll just stand there wondering what hit them. Then you hit them again.

Seriously, I did the entire Arena questline in about half an hour this way.

Sure, but all of those things require you to have played the game a fair amount. Enchanting requires finishing all the bullshit recommendations for the Mages guild before you can start doing it, several hours at least. Plus having used Soul Trap a lot or been lucky when you find soul gems.

The method I used can be attained in maybe two hours of gameplay rather than requiring the completion of a not-insignificant portion of the game. Sure, the enchantment stuff may be overpowered, but at least you earned it; all I did was roll a spellsword, sneak around for a while to get the stealth skill up and voila! Insta-killing sneaky death machine. Of death.

I can't believe nobody's said this, but:

Bo Jackson in Tecmo Super Bowl.

If the game was to be believed, Jackson was not a man, but a tireless machine with the speed of Nike herself.

In recent memory - the Nod Widow from C&C 4. It starts off beatable, but with all the upgrades it can kill the heavier units in two strikes and rape Crawlers.

It also burrows.

Seriously, four seconds = dead Dracula. Sad.
Or Crissaegrim, for one second dead Dracula (= But then the shield rod is basically handed to you, whereas you'd have to farm awhile to get a Criss...

Oh, lets name a few that didn't get mentioned...or are too obscure to matter.
Underpowered is easy. The absolute best example I can think of "Useless/Underpowered" is the Cloak of Darkness from Wizards and Warriors. It was MEANT to be a power-up, I swear!

-Grit's Artillery+Meatwall combo, and the CO Colin in general. (Advance Wars 2 and DS)
-Op-INTENSIFY (Armored Core 3 and Silent Line)/Human PLUS (AC series in general)
-Unification+Tolerant race in Master of Orion 2.
-Kensai-Mage in Baldur's Gate 2
-XMI Mk2 Missile Boat in X-Wing Alliance (tied with TIE-Defender w/Tractor Beam)
-Storm Tornado and Charged Chameleon Sting (Megaman X1)
-Frankish Paladins and Breton Elite Longbowmen (Age of Empires 2) - ironic, eh?
-Less Lethal Shotgun (SWAT 4)

And the grandaddy of them all:
-Card Mod+No Encounter/Aura Spell (FF8 - LUDICROUSLY easy game, especially with the junction system. Hands down one of the absolute most broken metagames in history.)

Boss! Seth in Street Fighter 4. The playable one can't take a hit, the boss one can and just plain cheats.

Lunar Staff's level 1 spin ultra in Ninja Gaiden 2 is almost as powerful as most other level 2 ultras, has massive range, and has a long duration. Makes a difficult game much less so.
