In the category of films that were over hyped as being exceptionally good (something that was lost in translation half way through this thread) I would say Blade Runner.

Perhaps it is just that I haven't seen the version that everyone loves (after all, the director has put out many, many versions over the years) but the story, whilst perhaps ground breaking at the time is rather average in retrospect.

Please don't take it the wrong way when I say this. I can see how it influenced the development of film and science fiction, in particular the imagery used, in that it dared to do something different. I can also see the underlying themes. Its just that as a movie in itself, when stripped of these things, it just becomes a rather average film.

Grahhhh, I actually had a list of overratted movies I made back in high school because I was bored as hell in film study but I can't remember what was on it.

So while I can't remember what was on it it is time for a new one. Starting off the top of my head with Stepbrothers. For about a month or two all my friends were quoting this movie much like Napolean Dynamite was quoted when that first came out. So I finally got around to watching it and thought to myself what a crappy movie it was. Not very funny as it was just Will Ferrell, John Riley, and Richard Jenkins shouting for an hour and a half.

Donny Darko.
All these people talk about how deep and amazing it is, and it wasn't either of those things.
It was bland, boring, and pretentious.
I thought it was beautiful. My brother had a mental illness very like the lead character's and the movie looked at the topic in a gentle and intelligent manner.

I found the scenes between Donnie and his mother absolutely heartbreaking.

Probably the Dark Knight.
It was too long; if they had ended it at a certain point, a potential sequel would've been amazing, but as it stands, they wanted to finish the plot and did a pretty bad job with a lackluster ending.

when i first read "blade runner" i thought blasphemy! but tbh after reading what you wrote i think you're right. being a cult classic shouldnt exclude it from scrutiny. i guess thats the entire point of this thread though...

Little Miss Sunshine...not funny, not clever, and it was a F#@$@ best pic nominee?? The payoff at the end is a dance scene? Didn't they already do that in Napoleon Dynamite?

Titanic easily, 11 oscars and a worldwide boxoffice of $1,8 billion for that piece of crap?
Agreed, but maybe it's because I'm an emotional rock and I don't respond well to tear-fests. And Titanic is clearly a tear-fest.
Titanic, were it a novel and not a film, would be a drug store Romance Novel and nobody except lonely housewives and "Smart Bitches who love Trashy Novels" would have heard of it.

Titanic was only successful because it was a cheesy romance novel plot turned into a film with a mega budget.
Amen.

And here I thought I was alone in despising this P.O.S. movie. It turned an already 'titanic' event in our history into a 3hr Harlequin romance. A close second in disappointing movies would be Pearl Harbor for the exact same reasons.

... Because Napoleon Dynamite is definitely the first movie to ever include a dance scene. I loved Little Miss Sunshine.

Anyways, the most overrated movie I've seen is easily Slumdog Millionaire. Didn't hate it necessarily, but I've seen at least 20 movies from '08 that I thought were better.

people think it's the best, but it's probably the worst movie in existence. there is EVERYTHING wrong with that movie. there is not a single thing that is good about it.
Wow, I wouldn't invoke the fires of hell on the movie, but it is certainly overrated. I feel for that Jon Heder guy. He's never gonna live that role down.
i don't understand how he has a career. the only people who should be paid to be retarded are the guys from Jackass

If you have ever seen Battle Royale dont you think that the "exchange student" looks like a japanese napoleon Dynamite?
also most over rated film i can think of is Quantum of Solace... Disapointment!

Alot of girls I know absolutely love that film and a couple of guys do.
But that film was...well, in my opinion, shit to the extent that can only be rivalled by Cloverfield. The film was so bad I now don't want to read the books because if the film was anywhere near true to the plot of the book, then I'm going to stay clear.

Aw...I like Life is Beautiful. Must be because I haven't heard a lot about it before or after watching it. America doesn't usually hype foreign films.

Yeah, it's just that I'd heard all my life about how it was one of the greatest holocaust related films and when I saw it, it just didnt hold up.

While I do enjoy the father-son relationship and the whole "it's all just a game" aspect some of my problems with it are:

It's too schmalzy, the concentration camp doesnt look atall like a concentration camp and the prisoners look like they have it pretty easy and except for one "blink and you miss it" refence the character didnt seem Jewish at all.
Although I did enjoy the first part before he has the child more than I did the second.

300.

When the hype for it resounds around the internet, you can't help but look forward to it.

Then you realize that the only reason everybody loved it was for one quote.

Batman Begins. I don't see why everyone is falling head-over-hells for that one.
It's a good movie, but it didn't feel like Batman to me.
Oh and I love "Life Is Beautiful". I don't recommend it to exactly anyone, but I loved it personally.
