World of Warcraft, no contest here.

I mean really, the only reason the game's so gigantic now is a monstrous marketing scheme and hype, just like Pokemon was several years before it.

I have to say it. Half Life 2.

It's coming to the point where they're charging full price for something that isn't even a full game yet.

And it has a legion of fanboys that will flame me just for saying that.

I must first say that I hate the term 'overrated'. It's become a tool for gamers who feel their opinion is entirely too important, and it attempts to cast doubt on the opinion of everybody else instead.

Nothing wrong with having an opinion that goes against the majority mind you. It's just terms like 'overrated' are used to validate one person's opinion OVER others in an extremely self centered way.

blah blah blah, I digress. Okay, I'll play along!

I never really understood the love of Halflife 2. Now I REALLY loved the original, but the pacing of Halflife 2 was just all out of whack. Seriously, the developers would give us a cool moment or concept, and the proceed to run it into the ground. By the time the next change up happens your so happy to be done with that last bit that you don't realize the next bits going to do the same thing. Valve should really take some notes from Bungie, say what you will about Halo but that franchise knows fucking pacing.

Gotta be Mirror's edge. Seriously, it got so much hype in the beginning, but, when I bought it, I was disappointed at the way it turned out. Plus, I saw through the one twist in the game about 20 seconds in.
I agree with this point completely.

Also, the GTA series.

Interestingly, bar Farcry 2 (which I enjoyed), I've not played a single one of these overrated monstrosities. Thanks guys, you all make me feel a lot better about myself.

I'll put Zelda: Twilight Princess as overrated. It really wouldn't surprise me if magazines gave it 9/10 or 10/10 without having even played it because the concept of a 'bad Zelda game', for some, is like defying the laws of physics or something.

EDIT: Oh, to hell with it, can I just put the entire Wii console down as overrated?

I wish this site had other font sizes so I could write the word Halo larger.

Dear god that game gets so much press and is so over-rated.

Its a decent FPS with a strong Multiplayer Mode Emphasis...nothing new or interesting about it.
Your right, I decided to play the first halo just to have the right to say it sucks, and during the xbox live download I thought to myself "hey since everybody likes it so much it could be good, why had that not occurred to me?" And I also reasoned that, hey, how can you make a bad fps anyway?

Turns out pretty bad, there are so many copy pasted areas you find yourself getting lost, thinking your going the wrong direction. The difficulty curve shoots up randomly once the enemy's get vehicles and those ridiculous spam rockets, whereas for the fist 2 levels I simply used melle on all enemy troops I found. The story is alright but you wouldn't want to hold it up as a pinnacle of creativity. All of you allies are macho space marines practically begging to be infested by alien parasites, which they unsupriseingly do. The parasites themselves and in fact the whole game feels so strongly similar to the original half life its almost "uncanny". And turning the game onto veteran mode simply means that the first proper gunfight is an impenetrable wall.

So in conclusion I agree with you.

BEGIN RANT

*reads instructions at the back of the box*
"To start flame war, take one 'games that are overrated' thread, add about four dozen Halo Hate posts and then a few subsequent defense posts and mix the two together, allow to cook for a little while then dash a little 'search bar nazism' on the top for that extra flavour and stir. Allow to sit for three minutes then make a response entirely in caps lock. Flame war should be able to serve up to twelve thousand people."

Okay that was merely a joke and I did not mean to offend anyone but seriously on topic I found games like Call of Duty overhyped but that's really because that's just not my genre... sci fi is. And of course I've mentioned titles like Half Life 2 and Goldeneye which I found fun but not divine godly entities that decended from the heavens.
But as always that's just me, I can't prove that they are bad games* and if you like them then of course, as always with Vrex, I respect your opinion.

Also I thought I'd say something to all the people complaining that Halo got 'too much press'... a game getting a lot of press is a good thing. Mass Excitement for one thing helps bring people together and make massive events to the point where the anticipation is ultimatley more fun than the finished product. More importantly though a game getting lots of attention in the media and advertising is a good thing because it means that gaming as an industry is getting a lot of attention and that means that big shot money making investors are ready to invest into the industry thus allowing us to make bigger and better games and thus help the industry to evolve. Mainstream consumerism, I hate to say it, is the only way we can ever find ourselves making masterpieces today. I hate when the gaming community complain that the media isn't taking the game medium seriously, then whine that a game is getting 'too much press'.... it brings to mind a little kid eating with an ice cream who didn't get the flavour he wanted and won't eat it but also won't give it to anyone else.

So to answer your question, yes I do believe Halo was overhyped.... but I had only ever expected a game, nothing more and nothing less and if they had changed the 'Halo Formula' then everyone would have killed Bungie for it. So I got what I expected and therefore I loved Halo 3 on it's own merits, believe me I can understand people saying it's overhyped but I can't stand when people all out hate on it and think they can prove it's bad based on their opinion*.

Seriously though, these threads need to die because, as someone pointed out earlier the word 'Overrated' these days is just used as a tool for people who think their opinion is too important and the term is thrown around way too much and it always erupts into flame wars.

END RANT

Spore. Dear god SPORE. That is all.
SPORE didnt really get that much hype, it was mostly people talking about it over the internet.

Now Halo2+3, those are overhyped pieces of bullshit which made me regret ever thinking of buying them. terribly written, boring, useless, not fun, and they put too much emphasis on a shitty multiplayer with a grand total of one good game: griffball

It was certainly overhyped for me. I remember reading about it about 4 years ago, following it religiously, then eventually giving up on it. So when I finally realised it was actually coming out, I was over the moon...until I played the damn thing. The editors are quite fun, but the game...I think I willed myself to like it when I actually played it, but looking back, I realise how tacky and dumbed down it was, especially when compared with the original videos. So maybe it wasn't necessarily a case of an overhyped game, but I still won't forgive the damn thing.

the game itself has been greatly expanded since the Galactic Adventures expansion came out. still, always take the "second coming of christ" with a mountain of salt, otherwise you are bound to be disappointed. they did replace some of the procedural animation stuff, like now animals will actually attack with something not on a "head" or "arm". im happy that happened because one of my greatest creations in that game now uses it's tail flail and wingblades.

COD5, because although it tires to bring some new ideas, it is a step back and the multi player is just a re-skin of COD4, still a good game but its not groundbreaking in any way.

Who the hell is overrating that game? What you said is pretty much what I've heard everyone say about it. That it's simply not up to the CoD4 quality. A step back.

RE 5, Gears of War 2, Assassins Creed, and many more but iv'e turned them in so long ago I forget.
Not to be spiteful, I enjoyed Gears of War 2 for a while, but it all dribbled away as I neared the end of the campaign. The spark just sort of fizzled out the longer I played.
