There are so many titles to choose from...

Like so many others I would like to give the obligatory Halo 3 mention, but in all fairness I got off the hype bandwagon for the franchise after sitting in line 4 hours for the midnight release of the Halo 2 train wreck.

Sooo... That being said, I would have to say Fallout 3.

Don't get me wrong, it's not that I don't like the game, and I am still happy that it was even made at all after the troubled history of the franchise. However, F3 was billed as being the greatest thing since sliced bread, and all we got was a Fallout game that was stripped of everything that made Fallout 1 and 2 the cult RPG classics that they are. F3 was completely devoid of the dark humor, pop culture references, and overwhelming freedom that made Fallout 1 and 2 great staples of RPG history.

*Sigh* Maybe New Vegas will be a little closer to capturing the soul of the Fallout franchise.
Fallout 3 is probably my favorite game.... so if Obsidian can make something similar but retain the dark humour ans spirit of the old games then it could be just too awesome to handle...

RE 5, Gears of War 2, Assassins Creed, and many more but iv'e turned them in so long ago I forget.
Not to be spiteful, I enjoyed Gears of War 2 for a while, but it all dribbled away as I neared the end of the campaign. The spark just sort of fizzled out the longer I played.
Completely agreed. The only reason why I'm not incredibly angry at my purchase is because of Horde mode, which I'm still enjoying with friends. If not for that I would've lost nothing sticking with the original game.

Half-Life 2. The only way I can conceive of it being more over-rated is for it to cause the player physical pain.

Halo 3, Final Fantasy 7, Half Life 2. Those are all i can think of for now. Dno't get me wrong, i've played all these and liked them but I really do think they don't deserve almost all of the praise they get.

EDIT: Oh, and CoD4, again it's pretty good but i personally thought CoD:WaW was better.

Halo 3, GTA4, Spore are just a few that I can think of. They were so hyped and they just couldn't deliver.

DEAD SPACE
and SMASH BROS BRAWL

Dead Space was so mediocre it makes me vomit when people praise it so highly.
And SSBB did nothing to improve the Smash Bros experience and IMO actually lowered it a bit.

Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

One of the most boring games I've ever played, complete with bland, unmemorable characters, retarded storyline, a vast array of broken gameplay mechanics and a big monotonous open world with nothing to see. Basically, there's nothing good about that game. It's a posterchild for mediocrity and lack of any imagination.

Daikatana
I thoroughly disagree. Daikatana is generally accepted as totally crap, so it can't qualify for "overrated" since it already is at the bottom of the barrel ;)

Half-Life 2 actually gives me motion sickness, which is sort of like physical pain............

not sure if you bothered to read any of the earlier posts... but as the title of the topic is "Most overrated games of the current gaming era" putting Final Fantasy 7 on your list is pretty ridiculous... that game is OLD, in fact 1997 old. it ain't current in any way shape or form. it got alotta hype when it first came out because for the time both the game itself and the cinematics therein were great.
/end rant

but seriously my beef was with Halo 3, I mean the first one was good, mainly due to it being one of the only acceptable shooters/games out for the x-box when it was out... second one was alright... third one they advertised it as such that it seemed god himself came down and gave them a game perfect in all forms without flaws or repetitive gameplay or anything of the like,
and low and behold we are granted halo 2 with shineyer graphics and a little bit of story expansion... I mean due to the following all they had to do was just say hey look halo 3 is coming out and no explanation about anything and it woulda sold like hotcakes... why bother with the hype people should know by now if you overhype you start to develope an undercurrent of dissent amongst your fans... not good business. /end rant2

halo 3. the day it came outit looked dated and played like the game it is. a last gen generic shooter. other possibles are mass effect, RE5, and zelda TP.
I don't think Zelda TP is as overrated as, say Halo 3. I played it once when I borrowed my friend's Wii (just for that game, obviously) and sunk into it like into the sea with 200 pounds of lead tied to my ankles. The game world was huge, and impressive-looking for a Wii game, the gameplay didn't force to arbitrary "shake the remote like it's on fire and tied to your arm" moves, but the controls were sophisticated and smooth. The story was a bit more than "saving the same bloody girl with the same bloody boomerang" but just a little, which is actually exceptional for a Zelda game. As it was Christmas when I borrowed it and there was no snow, thanks to those smug twentysomethings pumping the hydraulics of their fucking Hummers, I was absolutely awestruck as I stumbled to Snowpeak.

Fashizzle my sizzle... I'm sounding like a fanboy. I'd say the entire Mario series including all the spinoffs. They're just the same game over and over and over. I'll leave MGS4 and all the others 'cause they've been included in this thread enough times.

Oh, and one game that should really get preposterous praise: PAINKILLER!!!!1111QQ

Fable II. Lionhead really need to stop letting Peter Molyneux talk to the media. The way in which that guy hypes his games is absurd.
