Personally, I think Morrowind and the Portal games. Not that they're bad, they've just been ruined for me by all the hype by EVERYONE saying how awesome they are.
You let other people influence your personal experience of a game that much? Wow.

For me it's probably Minecraft. I can see the appeal but it's hardly a game.
Yeah, I know how shallow that makes me sound, but I have friends that think they are God's gift to man...annoying as all Hell...
But that's not the game's fault, don't take it out on them! :p

I'd say Halo, it had an sort of interesting story but a shooter it wasn't impressive. I did play it on the PC how ever so maybe it was like a big thing for consoles but if you ask me Golden Eye was the big console shooter.

Wow you hate a game because people like it? So I have to ask how many people have to say they like a game before you hate it by default? ten fifteen? Over 9000?
I only ask because if you somehow can't have fun playing a game you find fun simply because a great number of other people agree with you that it is fun then you come off as someone who is desperate to be different and is a self declared super intellectual.

For something to be overrated in your opinion it would have to be something many people find fun and you yourself find completely boring. for me it would be anything MMO or anything focused solely on open ended gameplay. I want a story along with my experience, a beginning middle and end.

It's not that other people liked them, it's just how annoying they were about it. I couldn't go ten minutes without one of my friends making a quote or reference to one of them.

Portal 1 and Oblivion for me. I found Portal nothing more than a good puzzling game, but it never reached that divine status for me. Comparing Oblivion to Morrowind caused me to appreciate Oblivion less than the predecessor. Since Morrowind had a very unique world while Oblivion was your standard fantasy playground.

Super Mario Galaxy 2. Don't get me wrong, the level design, gameplay, music and aesthetic are all great, but it makes absolutely no effort to present itself as something new from the first. The first was of course predictable, but the new setting over-powered it. The second one doesn't have that excuse, so it was literally like playing Galaxy 1 again. This is a shame, as, from a detached perspective, it's a great game, but I can't play it without that dirty feeling that I am having a great time with a game that took zero effort in terms of story. God dammit Nintendo.

More recently - Infamous. I do not see why that game got such high ratings. Nothing about that game stood out to me in anyway. The whole 'gritty' aspect just made it that much worse.

Of all time - Half Life 2.

I did enjoy the game and appreciate it but people act like it was the second coming of Christ, in video game form. The things it leaned heavily on, like the physics and the gravity gun were just gimmicky. Also the story was nothing new, it was the same alien invasion premise used so many times before, in so many other genres and mediums. At times the story and plot even seemed non-existent. They only gave you tidbits of what was going on throughout the whole game and never delved deep into who the aggressors were or what they ultimately hoped to accomplish. This is a real double standard when the story from this game gets lauded but everyone thinks Halo's story is unoriginal and run-of-the-mill.

L.A. Noire, I guess. Full marks for effort--I'm very appreciative a big studio put out a AAA title that tried to do something different from the usual six genres we see over and over again. I just can't play games that expect me to read the developers' minds.
I feel like every R* game from this gen is massively overrated. San Andreas is one of my all time favorites but they seemed to have peaked with that. Yea what was up with Noir: sometimes Cole would make the question completely different if I clicked Lie. It wasn't very intuitive and didn't give a lot of detail for input when compared to the output.
RE4 was okay but not worthy of all the praise it got. Neither was Mass Effect (though I haven?t finished it yet) or any other Bioware game I?ve played.
But the most overrated game I?ve played this gen would still have to be No More Heroes. I don?t get it, what?s so great about a barren sandbox and minigames based on jobs so tedious we make immigrants do them.

Need for speed most wanted.

After the epic Underground series, peopel were on the edge of their seats, bracing for epic gaming with Most Wanted...
Only to be dissapointed in stupid AI, trigger happy police, stupid msiions and barely a hueg drop in customisation and "undergroundism"

Most racing games, the Pokemon games, God of War 2 and 3, Minecraft, and Persona 3 and 4. Note that the games I have just mentioned are not bad, just overrated (except the racing games where all you do is repeat the same courses with noting else).

Every Halo game and every COD game (with the exception of MW1). I'm not a huge shooter fan, but I do enjoy a bit of a murder-fest every now and then. All Halo 1 did was show people how to make a shooter on consoles actually work (not be amazing, just WORK), but I keep hearing people saying they can't wait for the full priced HD remake, and are psyched for 4, and I just can't understand WHY.

COD has been the same game rehashed every time since forever. Modern Warfare changed it up a bit with a new setting and mechanics and a story that actually needed a writer, but since then, the franchise has been trying to ride on it's success, rather than try to make new success.

Also, Final Fantasy 7. I could just not get into that one, even after 10 hours of forcing myself to try.

Half Life 2. At least the first Half Life had an interesting story and some originality. Half Life 2 had the barest of stories and just became a fight the aliens, run-and-gun, linear shooter. If you want that at least Halo does it more fun and with more interesting characters, but Halo gets many PC gamers hate while Half Life 2 is looked upon like it's a gift from God.

The only way I can conceive GTA IV getting all those perfect scores is that people are very easily led into believing R* is a messiah of a company.

Its boring, controls like shit, is poorly written and paced, is chock-full of 2-dimensional characters, and is just incredibly mediocre in general.
Couldn't agree more.Rockstar could probably just put a turd between 2 slices of bread at this point and critics would be falling over each other in their rush to proclaim it as the best sandwich ever

Man, do I disagree! I'm not going to rant about this or insult you and your family or call your sexual preferences into question. It's just funny how polarizing that game (and Rockstar in general, apparently) can be.

On topic though: I'll probably go with anything by Bethesda. That and Call of Duty 4 and beyond.

PSone-era Final Fantasy games and every installment to follow.
In all fairness, I LOVE FInal Fantasy VII, and Final Fantasy IX looks really good, but I hate how the fandom surrounding these games overshadows IV, V, and (the best in the series) VI.
