The Path, Bethesada games (they're alright, but the only one I'd actually consider as good as the hype is Morrowind), pretty much any non-tactical FPS in a realistic setting, and Fable.

That would have to be, for me personally, GTA IV, and any Call of Duty games after Modern Warfare 1.

Personally, I think Morrowind and the Portal games. Not that they're bad, they've just been ruined for me by all the hype by EVERYONE saying how awesome they are.

Overhyped =/= overrated.

Bayonetta. Got great reviews, I got bored instantly and returned it after an hour.

You let other people influence your personal experience of a game that much? Wow.

For me it's probably Minecraft. I can see the appeal but it's hardly a game.

BioShock.

Good story and wonderful art design don't make up for what a dull, samey shooter it is. It just gets really repetitive, the gunplay was horrible. I was really enjoying the game when the big reveal happened, regardless of the dull gameplay but after that the game took a dive from mediocrity to absolute crap.

And Fontaine is a such a terrible villain too.

Edit: Bland isn't the right word, more like dull.

Killzone 2. Yes, it's pretty, but it's instantly forgettable, not to mention badly designed towards the end.

You're forgetting that this game also had no fucking characters at all.

I don't care how good a story is supposed to be, if it has no characters or character interaction to drive it then it might as well be a Lamborghini without wheels.

Xenosaga, among Japanese RPG fans.
It has one of the most mind numbingly awful stories I have ever experienced in a game. Granted about 75% of that is based solely on Shion, who is without a doubt the most hateful character I have ever had the misfortune of witnessing.

Final Fantasy VI as well. No, I did not forget an 'I', I do mean 6.
It's constantly used as a counter to VII's popularity, and is one of the big faces of 'Video games were back in then!', it is a very good game; but it has reached a point where it is pretty safe for me to say that its overrated nature easily rivals VII, and due to nostalgia goggles people simply refuse to believe that there is anything remotely lacking about the game in any area.

Yeah, I know how shallow that makes me sound, but I have friends that think they are God's gift to man...annoying as all Hell...

The Legend of Zelda OOT : yes it's a fantastic game, however it's NOT the best game of all time, especially if the later Zelda games are superior.

Super Mario Galaxy: to me it's not nearly as good as Super Mario Sunshine, the levels are not huge and do not allow exploration as much as 64 and Sunshine (did not play SMG2 though)

Resident Evil Franchise: lame gameplay mixed with the most -So bad it's funny- kind of story in gaming history.

Doom 3: Zzzzzz

L.A. Noire, I guess. Full marks for effort--I'm very appreciative a big studio put out a AAA title that tried to do something different from the usual six genres we see over and over again. I just can't play games that expect me to read the developers' minds.

You mean the pre-recorded speakey voices, and the characters that you never get to see or interact with because the Unreal engine didn't allow for proper facial animation back then? Yeah sorry, but no.

The only character this game had were the environments and the Big Daddies.

Wasn't this thread like, made a few weeks ago if that?

I guess you can't say any game is overrated; some people just have different tastes. Sure, I don't like the Halo franchise, but lots of people like them so more power to it.

The only way I can conceive GTA IV getting all those perfect scores is that people are very easily led into believing R* is a messiah of a company.

Its boring, controls like shit, is poorly written and paced, is chock-full of 2-dimensional characters, and is just incredibly mediocre in general.
