Sexy/Awesome armor that has crap stats.
Thats why some games... (well, LotRO) have an Outfit option... so you can make it look like you're wearing the 'sexy/awesome' outfit, whilst you're actually wearing useful stuff with good stats for your gear :)

Oh shit! Theres money in borderlands? Really I mean its pretty sad when you can find more and better things lying around in a bin than the shop

Probes in Mass Effect, I hope there is more firewalker missions.

Very linear gameplay of Mass Effect 2, I liked Mass Effect's bigness to it even if most of it was useless

Pistols in Fallout 3, my fists do a better job

Endless loading time (with accent on Dragon Age). I know it's not pointless at all, you wait for the fancy something to start, but still... argh.
Oh yes, and the money in Assassins Creed 2. Complete waste of time.

Team Fortress 2's hats.
They do sometimes end up being pretty funny and I think they can be considered collectibles.

In many games you can sit on chair but it mostly has no use...
I've wondered about that many times. (P.S. I like your avatar)
I always figured it was for RPing :p
So RPing now can just be considered sitting in a chair and doing nothing, works for me. (P.S. I like your avatar as well)
You wouldn't just sit and do nothing.

You can talk, eat, rest, play chess and a countless other things in RP while siting down.

Altho if it's a purely singleplayer game, I can't come up with anything.

In The Darkness, the televisions have a variety of channels, all with sound. One channel has what I believe is the entirety of "The Man With The Golden Arm"- A full length movie. I stopped watching about 15 minutes in, but it was still going strong. I doubt most people even give it a second look. When it comes to pointlessness, I think this one takes the cake.

Also, the Cheeses from Perfect Dark.
Wow that whole "Full length movie in game" thing sounds pretty cool. Reminds me of Destroy all humans! And the full length B-movie in the extras menu. I watched it twice just to get my moneys worth.

Is it not inconceivable that someone playing the game might be new to gaming?
But come on, I was 6 when I started on the PS1, I always knew it was left for go, right for looking. Like it was hard wired into my DNA. S:

Metal Gear Solid 3.

Throughout the game, aiming in first-person is easy and there is nothing that separates it from MGS2 or 4. But when Snake, um, earns his eyepatch, you'll notice that from that point on when you go first-person the right tenth or fifteenth of the screen goes dark.

No fucking point whatsoever. Extra credit points EVERYWHERE.
I loved that little bit of immersion. It's details like that which turn a good game into a great game.

Games that ask "Do you want to pick up the health potion?" especially when you have infinite storage.

YES! That's why I clicked on it.

But surely if the first person view didn't change, wouldn't some complain that he only has one eye? Its my favourite game and its because of detail like that, which makes it, in my opinion, my favourite game! (commas!)

EDIT: oh yeah... OT: Sherry in resident evil 2, and Ashley in resident evil 4! Both annoying and whiney, and getting in the way -.- Those games could've been even better without those two!

So the story is:
I was playing Mafia II earlier and I noticed a feature completely useless and very unneeded. For some weird reason they put playboy magazines in the game with pictures, so I was wondering "Seriously? What's the point of this?"

Discussion: Has there ever been something in a game you found completely pointless?
Actually, I found the most useless feature in Mafia 2 was the sandbox.
They would've been better just leaving you on a linear path without the illusion of an open city or maybe they could've worked on the city more, put some fun stuff in there to pass the time when not on missions... one of the two.

Either way, Mafia 2 is a great linear game but the sandbox part is a blank canvas for the story to be splattered all over, it doesn't have any paint of it's own...
It doesn't have a sandbox, just an open-world. And you're hardly going to feel like you're in the mob if you're just sent on missions in a similar vein to other linear games; the city's an important part of it. If you provide lots of other things to do then it detracts from the story and messes with the pacing.

As for the playboy mags: they're just a collectible like almost every other game has, I don't see why you've singled out. At least they're interesting to look at.

I'd say my pointlss thing is actually in that game, saving Morrowind since you find out in Oblivion that after your character left, Morrowind got basically destroyed by a moon faling on them and setting off the Red mountain. So really makes going through all that trouble pretty pointless towards te end. Unless of course you wanted ... revenge! For what they did to your character in a past life.
Wait why have i never heard that, is it a quest or something?
You don't hear it out straight per say but I've looked it up on the UESP wiki when I heard it mentioned and it says tha since Vivec (The Demi-God guy) is almost powerless now, the moon that was held up in the air above Vivec City by his powers was no longer held in place and it hit Vivec making the Red Mountain erupt. The eruption made most of it unhabbitable. Most of the Dark Elves had to flee and leave Morrowind since the Nords and Argonians invaded them after it and your character who you played as in Morrowind has disappeared off on some new quest

Oblivion did not happen. Morrowind is fine. Nononono. Morrowind was not destroyed.
If they want me to believe that, then they should have put it in a good game.

When that pops up, I scream "Whats a thumbstick!?!" at the TV. Stupid TV.

So how come the moon didn't fall on the city when you destroyed the heart in the game? Also Vivec (city) is nowhere near Red Mountain, even if it did fall it would only hit with the force of an object of its weight that was only 20 meters or so above the ground (or however high up it was, it wasnt very). None of the ingame books in Oblivion say that Morrowind was hit by such a catastrophy.

It's Lucifer from Devil May Cry 4.
Weaker (much) than either Rebellion or Gilgamesh, and it is generally a very bad idea to try using it in combat.

I just thought the Playboy mags were like those other collectibles in games like that, or the concept art/comic books you unlock for other games. But in this case they just give you a little bit of vintage sex appeal to encourage you to find more.

The .32 pistol in Fallout 3. The starting pistol is better, and the ammo for the .32 is the same as the hunting rifle which you get around the same time.
I was gonna say the same thing about the Chinese pistol. Seriously, I walk bleary eyed into the wasteland, stumble across an awesome fucking Mauser pistol and it does how much damage!?? I literally couldn't kill a Bloatfly with it, it's that shithouse.

I think the Playboy books are a good thing. It says in the demo that you have to collect them for some kind of in game reward. And besides, what's wrong with checking out some hot nude women of the 50's? Pointless? I don't think so.
