I happen to love Portal, but I agree with you about the cake... It was mentioned once or twice during the entire game and even then it wasn't that funny. The companion cube was much funnier. As for the companion cube, I never got that one either. It was funny for the same reason that it's funny watching a seven-year old try to manipulate a forty-year old: they have no idea how to do so, but they insist on trying anyways, and as such make a farce of the entire scenario.
